hey hey everyone! if you're like me, you don't have a job, so you hang out on menewsha. here's a thread for us, since it's too cold to go to the real park (or the zoo, if you have a free one in your area).

what's your story? there's quite a few of us. both of my parents were forced into early retirement because their companies had layoffs, and most of my friends are still pizza delivery guys because they couldn't get a job after college. maybe that's your story, maybe its something else.

Me, I couldn't get a job after school, so I went to grad school. I'm in my final semester at NYU and I still can't find anything. My fiancee moved up here and he couldn't find a job in his major either. he works as a stock boy in a department store. between his pay and my loans, we get by pretty good.

so, what's your story? what do you do in the meantime? any song lyrics helping you through these tough times?

i'm studying for my BA at the moment.
although i'm moving soon, and will hopefully be able to get a part-time job then.

it's difficult though, since i have arthritis and can't do as much as i'd like to.
so it'd be frustrating for me and any potential employer. ):

Yep that is me to a tee.
I have tried putting myself out there over ten times, a few times I went back to the same places. But being inexperienced is a huge turn off in accomplice to this damn effed up economy. Out of all those attempts I have only had what...about three interviews. And I hate interviews because I hate the whole 'dress to impress' shit. I DO NOT dress to impress, take me as I am! Unfortunately employers won't because they are shallow and judgmental.

I also DO have a resume which I have been handing out with my applications, I was hoping it would help but no dice.
Song lyrics? Songs are a huge inspiration in my life particularly with my writing. But I have found some songs that could go onto the soundtrack of my life. I have taken a particular liking to Micheal Bolten's 'Go the Distance' featured in Disney's Hurcules. I recently found it to be very descriptive of me not only in finding a job but in getting my life started in general.

ugh i hate interviews too. i'm in the book publishing industry, which can be REALLY conservative in some places. at one place i interned at, my manager pulled me aside, shut the door and said, "when you go out into the real world and look for a job, you need to lose the earrings and buy a skirt...not pants... a skirt." THATS how conservative. Women need to wear skirts!

on the flip side, i interviewed at another book publisher for the managing editorial department, and my interview outfit consisted of green hair and leather pants (lol and a suit of course!) and i was hired for it. (it was an unpaid internship, but whatever). later when i asked him, why did he hire me, he said "you looked like you belonged here" in addition to being qualified.

sometimes you get lucky and you get to work for cool and edgy places. I'm not too optimistic though.

I Have worn nice pants to my interviews. Are you seriously telling me THAT might be part of my problem. That I can't stand wearing skirts and nice dress pants aren't good enough! Errrrg! That is such bull!

It depends on where you are, but there is a law where I am what was it now, my aunt told me; I think it was work hour restrictions or something for those under 18 or maybe it's 16, like they are not allowed to work evenings or something. This is why employers might not find them ideal, I just remember that my aunt told me when she applied for Weinersnitzle at 15, she pretended to be 18 or 16 whatever the right age is because of whatever this law is. So yeah it can be harder for teens but not impossible.

And me, I WANT to work, badly. I hate my being broke constantly effecting my hang outs with my friends. It sucks.

EDIT: I found some information on google.

then, i learned, that its better to work where you shop at... for the discounts!

Haha yeah exactly, I am trying most passionately to get hired by my absolute favorite place, Hot Topic. I didn't think about discounts though, the biggest appeal besides the place itself was the dress code. It's very me just the way I prefer to dress.

I currently hold two degrees, although I won't get the actual diploma for the second until May (don't ask me why, I'm not thrilled with it either). One of them is a B.A. in English, and the other is an A.S. in IT (speciality in web and graphic design).

I've been looking for work for months, but hardly anyone is hiring. Today I found two ads I'm applying to right now, both of them office jobs because I can't find anything else.

I'm also trying to make websites for people for whatever I can earn.

One of my worst moments during all this was in my last job: the ::censored:: boss didn't pay me. I had to report the man to the labor board, but like all government agencies they're overworked, underpaid, and understaffed. It took four months for them to issue my complaint a case number.

I don't have a job because I am still in high school and there would be nobody here to take me to my job, if I had one. So it'd be impossible to go anywhere. So mostly I spend my day at school or home where I just lay on the coach and do nothing. So my parents complain but what should they complain about? You are the one that won't give me anything. D:< SO GET OVER IT. Yea...my parents are complaining alot. I mean, I knew my mom complain but my dad now? Gosh, he is so old he can just dig his own grave. No, I don't mean that...D: But...it's so ehhh!

I applied to Claire's once but when I handed in the application they told me they had recently hired. Hot Topic this past month has given me the same response >_< come on Hot Topic!!!

I graduated from university last April and have been looking for a job since a couple months before then. Still haven't found one. I still have a minimum wage job that I get maybe 3-10 hours at a week, but that certainly doesn't pay the rent. I'm working on applying to graduate school in library science for next fall but in the meantime I'm still applying to every job I hear about. No one seems to want to hire me though ("what do you do with a BA in English?"). So yeah, in addition to all that, I'm hanging out with friends, playing WoW, playing Country Story, doing DnD, drawing, reading, etc.

i myself am not really looking for a job right now. i have a 2 1/2 month old kid to take care of, so i'm too busy. anyway, my husband has been looking for a job, but nothing now for over a month. however, he is thinking of starting a zoo in our area. we live in Chaparral NM, and the two major cities around us are Las Cruses NM, and El Paso TX. El Paso has a zoo, but Las Cruses doesn't, so he wants a zoo there. he's been asking random people what the think of that idea and the like it. he even sent an email to city hall and they like the idea. all he has to do now is make an appointment there and hope that goes well.

Same with my mom Yori but now it would really help her if I could find a job because she could use help playing the rent.

Well lets see was fired over a year ago had a temp job with the us census and haven't had much luck finding a regular job since. I've been working on the idea of starting a business selling my art and stuff so we'll see how that goes in the mean time back to job hunting I guess.
Just a piece of advice update your resumes on a regular basis -after each new job well do. Have someone else look them over for you. always dress appropriatly for an interview even if you don't like it. pay attention and be careful not to answer their questions to honestly like towards the end their all chummy with you and you feel more relaxed.. yeah don't start acting like yourself. at least not until you get the job ;)

Taviren: ha... my time goes to country story too. and restaurant city! good luck on those graduate applications, though i'm almost done with my master's degree and i still havent found anything.

binka: man starting a zoo!? that's crazy! i didn't even know a mere mortal could do such a thing!

ugh i just got another rejection email from a company i interviewed at. it was a generic form rejection, saying that they got someone 'more qualified and suited for the position'.

i'm so pissed because i was QUALIFIED. they were looking for something so specific... how many people are there with managing editorial experience, book publicity experience, and blog writing experience? seriously. they were looking for something so specific... and i NAILED that interview. the hiring manager called me himself, BYPASSING human resources, and i interviewed with both him and his co-worker.

and I STILL didn't get the job. seriously... what more could I have done?

I'm going to call them both tomorrow and ask why they didn't hire me. because this is getting crazy.
