I think Creative Writing is very valuable as a means of unleashing your mind to the open imagination. It stimulates and encourages creative thinking and problem solving. It lets you express yourself through stories and poems or just general free-flow thought. It gets the words out of your head and onto a tangible surface, which sometimes is all you really need to think straight again. It's a form of escapism, a form of therapy, and an educational tool. Without creative thought, we'd still be living in caves, huddling around a burning branch in awe. ;D

I feel creative writing is coming to an end. Sure there's been breakthroughs like Harry Potter (which J.K. Rowling was rejected from twelve publishers), but true works of art like Pride and Prejudice are being over looked. There was a guy who went through the hassle of pointing this out. He took Pride and Prejudice, renamed the characters and sent it in to several publishers, he was rejected from them all (sorry, I don't have the numbers of how many he submitted the story to). One managed to write back and said something along the lines of, 'avoid copying Pride and Prejudice'.
Sure creative writing gets amazing stories out of our heads and dreams, but with the way publishers are nowadays, these stories will remain as saved .docs in our computers that never get touched again.

i love creative writing cause i write as well..hehe. but it really fun and i get to express myself..i once described it as something like this.. " each letter a thread, each word a brush of color until you get a beautiful canvas that speaks more than words you can even utter.."
writing is an art work ^^
the characters reflect me or who i want to be..it that simple and yet so challenging..im writing right now with some of my friends.
we made ourselves the characters of this book on fantasy and magic were making..its really nice
the hard thing to do is getting out of the ideas of other books cause there are lots of books out thee and they may have the same ideas that you are having. but thats okay as long as you get to express youre feelings.
a good tip is one thing---write from your heart even when you dont feel like it..

I've got a ton of stories you can pull from. Most are written in the 'I' format while a few are written in the accepted 'they, his, him, her, them' format.

I find it difficult to put my reply in words.
Had you asked about writing in general, it would have been easier. I decided to look up the term "creative" writing.
So it's about inovation. So I guess the question comes down to, do new ideas have value?.
I would say yes because this is another aspect of advancing our society. Or in the case of the hobbyist/personal type writer, advancement of the individual.

@ Lovely Panda , maybe he was rejected BECAUSE they could tell he just changed the character names.
I agree though, classics like that may never be born again. One of my favorite classic pieces of literature is Frankenstein. It's amazing!
But i don't know , maybe sometime in the distant future, a novel will be discovered that is just absolutely amazing. I know that a lot of authors or poets who were responsible for amazing classic pieces of work were basically hated in their time, either that or they were extremely unpopular. Idk, thinking of things that way gives me hope.
But to answer the question of the thread, I think Creative Writing is so important ! I'm a writer myself, I mainly write poetry. The high school I went to was a magnet school and it focused on various arts. I went there for Creative Writing. I loved it! But I have to admit that a lot of people that went there only went because they wanted to get out of going to other schools or to be with their friends. And the school was dumb enough to let them in...
But I think more schools like that should be opened across america. Or there should at LEAST be more creative writing classes at schools. I know that when money is low, the arts are what gets cut first when it comes to education in grade schools. But still, I think they should really promote having creative writing classes because I know it would help a lot of people out. I'm not saying it would turn every participant into the next Mary Shelly, but I do think that the ones with potential would be able to shine through and show their talent and even get recognized for it.

Creative writing is something that I don't think that is done enough in schools. When I was in high school they were so busy shoving writing for needed content only down our throats that for the longest time I just despised writing. I always did very well in writing classes but I just grew to hate it because I never got to take a topic and be creative with my response.

Ya...schools do a lot of that. I got to be way more creative with my essays my first semester of college, though. I guess it's made the rest of my semesters' essay assignments a bit of a let down. Most teachers don't encourage their students to write about aliens, zombies, Chuck Norris, or cheese. >.>

I was wondering if I could quote you in my paper. Did you write that or did someone else?

It's important as means of escape from reality, great way to cope. Imagination is an important thing to have, in order to retain our sanity.

It's good for the people that like it, but when classes force students to write creatively it just turns them off of writing. I hate nothing more in school than to be told to "write a story" without any direction or guidance. Essays are better in a classroom setting.

I love writing myself :)
Sometimes when your alone and have no one to talk to I write a short story and post it on a site and read the comments people give me. Sometimes the story is related to what happened today that might have upset me or something that made me rejoice. Creative writing makes me express myself in so many ways and lets my thoughts fly.
Unlike relaity where my thoughts have to be kept inside on the internet where i write i'm as free as anyone else here. In writing I found out a lot of things about myself that i didn't realize until i started writing. Just like art, creative writing reflects your personality and who you really are. I finally realized i've been hiding my thoughts for so long just to please others...But when i wrote and let these thoughts out i pleased more than the people in reality.
Think freely. Express yourself.
Your imagination is the paint.
And your words are the masterpiece on paper. =D
Hope this helps!

Thank you guys so much for your input. You guys made my paper amazing. From what I hear, it got a good grade. My teacher has not posted the grades yet, but I hope with your thoughts it really made my paper amazing. I actually had to make my paper shorter so I had to cut out some stuff, but I still think it was good. Its hard to write about something you love in 3-4 pages when you can ramble about it for hours on end. I think I might re-do the paper (to its full length) and either post it for ya'll to see how I did, so submit it to our local paper to print and see what people think. If ya'll want to read it, I will post it. Thanks again SO MUCH.
