I'm 17 and got my first (and current) job when I was 14. My dad's friend owns a deli and needed a dishwasher on Saturdays, so I accepted. A few of my friends have jobs as well.
One of my friends desperately needs a job as soon as possible because her dad will no longer pay child support when she turns 18... which is May 6th. I went job hunting with her not too long ago... and had no luck. The reason was because she is incredibly picky.. and racist! I never knew she was so racist. >_< She kept saying, "No I don't want to work with brown/asian people... no those people look mean... no I don't want to work there." etc. She still hasn't gotten a job because of this reason: she's picky. So here's a tip: DON'T BE PICKY! A job is a job. At 16 you're not picking out what you're doing your entire life, and even if the job description isn't to your liking... give it a try anyways. It's experience and it's money.

true true thank you :)
and i agree! cuz sheesh thats kinda terrible :/
i know not to be picky just because i have no job experience so in a way, its more a risk for them to hire me :P
all im hoping for though is that i dont get stuck in fast food or something yucky like that, there are actual good reasons not to want to work there -_-

i feel you pain, i also need a part time summer job, but im only 13 so its hard to find one. i did ask my old babysitter if she needed help this summer and she said maybe so i might be all set. but if i were you, i would probaly go with the grocery store only beacuse (and this is what i think) if i were to work at a mall, i would want to buy the stuff ALL THE TIME! haha but then again at a grocery store you can always mess up on the produce and charge to much and they can get mad, or charge to little and you run up short of money at the end of the day. so i really dont know, sorry i cant help more...good luck!!!

I never had a job while I was in school.. I never saw the point. If I didn't have time to have fun with my friends, then I didn't have time to drag my butt to a job that will just wear me out after school. :P

Many of my friends went into fastfood and the movie theater (both are very lame to me, sorry). I just worked at the daycare center during the summer and breaks since I was sixteen, but that was very part-time and I didn't get payed for it until I was eighteen because "they were babysitting me" if I was underage.

You're so lucky that there is a mall near your house! I need a job as well.
Nowhere to work around here, think I need to move near the mall..

Good luck with finding a job! I hope it's easier to find jobs where you are than it is over here. I personally do have a job, but I've seen so many people needing jobs around here, it's chaotic. If I were you, I would try working at Domino's Pizza if you have one in your area (I am an assistant manager at one, been there for over two and a half years.) And, I'm not saying it's a fun or easy job, but I would prefer it over McDonald's. :) I hope you find a job you like really soon!

If you lose interest in a job, try and find a new one, but dont quit until you do have a new job. Otherwise you will be out of a means to gain spending money. Ive made that mistake a few times.

I work at a pet store. It's okay except those dumb customers who think it's okay to abuse fish just because they live in the water. I've also had people dump off animals at the store I work at. We can't legally take in pets from people so we don't but people leave them at the store anyway. I ended up with most of my pets that way.

For your age, I would try retail since they're not going to have many hazards that they have to worry about exposing a minor to. Anything where you can get sick/bit/hurt or dealing with restricted items should require you to be over 18.

I used to have a job at a butchers and I hated it so much.
It wasn't the work that I disliked, it was the customers, they were always so rude to me.
Well, tha and the fact you had to go in and out of a massive fridge with oversized lambs hanging in it, an on occasion rip kidneys out of them.
