I used to own a hedgehog... hard as mess to get them to trust you, as they're mostly blind and bond based on scent. I've always wanted a number of stranger animals for pets... skunks (omg some of the best pets ever, and you can have their scent glands removed so they don't spray), possums (lady brought one into the petsmart that I work at one time... omg too cute for words), and ferrets, if only because I used to take care of 20+ at a pet store in Alabama when I lived there (and because they're illegal in CA...otherwise I'd be owning one now). Aside from that I already own a chinchilla (really smart little rodents, plus they live for up to 20-30 years), and two rats (one harley coated blue, and one black and white dumbo)... I do miss having my snakes around though...

The ferrets you'd have to worry about, but the chinchillas usually don't bite for anything... at least my male doesn't, and he's a feisty little bugger. For the ones that are a bit nippy, usually they have some food or treat that they'd do anything for and while they're eating that treat (they tend to savor whatever they're eating :3 ) you can pretty much do whatever you want with them. It's a great way to desensitize them to handling.
