Who will join me? The league of people who spell "Amerika" with a 'K'

Well, there are many reasons for it, aesthetics is a big one. Rammstein's song "Amerika" helps too.

To join:

discuss stuff here.
get in the habit of spelling Amerika and not America.
Add Amerika to you custom dictionary if you are on Windows or Mac
If you are an author or publisher, then state your reasons for printing Amerika and not America.
I'll add more later

So Are you with me?

Clockwork Lime 05-09-2010 12:45 AM

What are YOUR reasons for it? :)

Panda-nee 05-09-2010 12:47 AM

Now why would you want to do that?

PoppyPatch 05-09-2010 02:10 PM

Um...I don't think so...

Barcelona squat and anarchist center, labeled "OKUPA Y RESISTE"In the 1960s and early 1970s in the United States, leftists, particularly the Yippies, sometimes used Amerika rather than "America" in referring to the United States.[1] It is still used as a political statement today.[2] It is likely that this was originally an allusion to the German spelling of America, and intended to be suggestive of Nazism, a hypothesis that the Oxford English Dictionary supports.

In broader usage, the replacement of the letter "C" with "K" denotes general political skepticism about the topic at hand and is intended to discredit or debase the term in which the replacement occurs. [9] Detractors sometimes spell former president Bill Clinton's name as "Klinton" or "Klintoon".

Other examples: Demokkkrat, Kkklinton, KKKapitalism, Republikkkan, etc.

So yeah, unless you want to suggest that you support the KKK or the theories of Nazism, I personally would suggest to stick to the old fashioned "c."

Amerika as in.. the Franz Kafka novel..? o___o

edit// I looked this "rammstein" up on wikipedia
You know Amerika is just the German spelling of America, right? :/

Silenia 05-09-2010 04:45 PM

And the Dutch spelling as well.

Cue 05-09-2010 06:55 PM

I spell it as "Amerika" anyways because I'm Japanese. o_o

This thread makes me think of Mortal Kombat...

...mmm I wanna go play that now...

Guivre 05-09-2010 07:38 PM

Yeah, but the name of the country "America" is latinized, so that's why it's using a "c".

SABBACI 05-09-2010 11:26 PM

Yes, I did know that it is the German spelling of America, and the Dutch; Germanic languages in general don't have a letter C and use K for it. I had no idea it had anything to do with the KKK or Nazism. That makes me feel a good deal more uncertain whether o not to continue. :(

melonmilk 05-10-2010 04:49 AM

I wouldn't, if I was you. Sorry, I love the Rammstein song too, but when I first saw this I thought it was supporting the Ku Klux Klan. :<
No matter how you explain it, I think people are going to misunderstand.

MINK 05-13-2010 10:54 PM

Cue 05-13-2010 11:03 PM

.. Uh .. that's utterly fantastic and I would love to spend more time on this subject but I do believe there is already a thread on this.. and you just posted in it, by the way.

CK 05-13-2010 11:05 PM

There - I've merged the threads...

MINK - You'll want to have a better look at our site rules. :)

Vexatious~Venom 05-16-2010 08:10 PM

Um...no. I have to say that I have always spelled America with a C and never even considered spelling it with a K. So I don't think I will start now. Not with seeing the whole connotations of nazism and the KKK anyway.

Son Zack 05-17-2010 12:53 AM

Yeah, that song is pretty rad, but I think I'm just gonna keep on keepin' on with the usual spelling. Especially due to the whole Nazism and KKK thing previously mentioned. Good luck with that, bro.
