Earthquake

About 1:40 or so today my house was shook with small little tremor waves, it was really freaky. It turns out that there was a 5.5 earthquake on the near border between Quebec and Ontario close to Gatineau (if any of you know where that is). So it only lasted 30 seconds no one was hurt, but it was really interesting to feel..just hope I never have to again.

So did anyone else feel it? Or have you ever experienced an earthquake or tremors before?

I used to live in California when I was little...so my first and only memory of a real earthquake was rather jarring. Definitely more than tremors. It was like everything was just shaking. And my brother and I used to sleep in bunk beds sometimes..and...ya. haha I just remember being on the ground after beings shaken off my bed. Our school used to have earthquake drills, too. Now I'm on the opposite coast and people treat a slight tremor like the world is going to explode. I usually don't even feel it. So they ask me about the earthquake and I'm like, "....I didn't feel any earthquake...y'all're crazy.." XD

I live in California, so yes, I've felt a ton of earthquakes. One that scared the crap out of me the most was one where the windows were rattling and my desk was shaking violently and things and I was completely home alone. I was so afraid and worried about everyone in my family, but my house and all of us were okay.

But yea, we have them pretty regularly here, but they are not usually that bad. Not enough to kill people and things, but I've been scared of having a really big one ever since there was those huge ones in other parts of the world. Because, you know, one plate moves and then all the other plates in the world have to move to adjust to it.

There was something like a 7.0 earthquake in a part of Mexico or near Mexico or something where no one lived (which made all people who felt it not feel it nearly as strongly, obviously because we were a significant distance from it) and I felt it here and it was a bit scary. I was laying in bed and it felt like I was in one of those cradle rocker things that people love to rock their babies back and forth in, but honestly, I was too lazy (and unsure if it was a real earthquake or if I was just dizzy because most larger earthquakes I've felt start with a very loud noise and I didn't hear any noise with this one) and I was okay and went to sleep afterwards. XD

I've felt a few little earthquakes that happened like two months ago when people thought the world was going all wrong. Two little ones at night two days in a row. I felt one, but it was just a little shaking, the other I slept through.

My town's pretty close to the edge of the area affected by that quake, I think. Nothing shook enough to move; I just thought a big truck was going by. n_n;;

Yeah, I felt yesterday's quake. Whole house started rattling the floor was moving under my feet. It's the first significant quake I had ever been in, so I was a bit frightened by it. If it lasted any longer I was about ready to run out of the house. XDD Of course, no one got hurt and nothing fell to the ground, but it still felt pretty extreme especially since I had never really been in a quake of that magnitude before.

It was very interesting to experience, but if my area's going to start getting quakes often... <<;

I used to live very close to the New Madrid fault. It hasn't really been very active in a long long time, so everyone is paranoid that it's suddenly going to wake up and just destroy everything o3o

Needless to say, I've had my fair share of earthquake drills. Never have been in a quake I could feel though.

I live in Ottawa, 20 minutes from Gatineau, so I pretty much felt the epitome of the quake. I've felt small tremors before, but definitely nothing like yesterday's quake... it certainly caught me off guard. At first I thought it was my washing machine (It's on the top floor and so am I, and it's an industrial washing machine so it makes the house shake) but then I realized it was a lot more violent than normal, so that's how I knew. Anyway, it wasn't that bad at all... everything remained intact (although I've heard a couple different stories from other people). The greatest thing I got out of it was reading all the funny Facebook status updates afterward.

No, I was slightly too far away to feel it. Near the border of Canada and Maine, but I was startled to learn about it this morning at the bank. I'm glad to hear no one was hurt, the news broadcast I caught a clip of didn't answer that question. >.>

I have felt tremors before, though, and will admit, it's a strange sensation. I used to live in Western Washington state, and often felt little earthquakes. I remember one day in particular we experienced mulitple tiny earthquakes throughout the day. The news just acted as if it were just like scattered thunderstorms or snow flurries. >.>

My first would have to be in CA. It wasn't bad, just a light shake. My second one was when I went home to IL. I was visiting relatives in CA. Anyway, Before the earthquake I let my hamsters out. They ran off, bolted towards the bathroom. I found it strange. Later a few past midnight my mom came in as I was watching DR Who, noticing the slight shake also.

What's on the back of my mind though is the Great Earthquake that happened ages ago. I heard from some that it may happen again.

I live in southern Ontario, a couple hours away from Toronto, and lots of people felt it here. I didn't, because I was at work and that's one solid building. x.x

But apparently it stretched from the Quebec-Ontario border, through Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, up North and as far down south even as NYC.

That's pretty significant. Crazy, huh?

Fire Cat 06-25-2010 08:08 PM

In my state, People felt it around detroit but it didn't get as close as to where i live.

sailor star rainbow 06-25-2010 08:49 PM

I heard about it but my state did not feels it at all live down in the south states.

Mystic 06-26-2010 12:59 AM

My house shakes all the time due to trains so I wouldn't have noticed it if it was felt here. It's strange to hear of people feeling an earthquake here. I'm in the Detroit area.

minifan_75_peaceout 06-26-2010 04:38 AM

nooooooooooooooo

Apparently there was an earthquake 2 blocks from me, but no one in my street felt it :P Pretty mad

The Bebe Girl 06-26-2010 04:56 AM

I felt the tail of it, first i ever felt. all it did was shake my tea...

Nolori 06-28-2010 04:14 AM

I'm another California girl near(ish) to the San Andreas Fault so, yeah, we get a lot of quakes. Most of them are really just tremors as aftershocks from small quakes. I've only ever been in two big (relatively) quakes. Stuff fell over and whatnot, but it wasn't really bad.

(Although I do have a friend whose mother's house is FILLED with glass. They did not have a good week when that happened.)

But, knock on wood, we've never had anything like what happened in Asia or Haiti a few years back. God, how awful. I really consider myself lucky.
