Interest Check: Go (Baduk, Weichi, Igo, etc)
 

Doing a quick interest check to see if anyone else here knows about this board game called Go. If anyone here has played it, heard of it and wants to learn how to play, or anything of the sort, please reply, :D

I've played Othello, which I understand is akin to Go, but I'm not sure of the differences.

This is going to sound terrible...but my knowledge of Go is limited to Hikaru no Go. ^^;;

That is the main reason Hikaru no Go was created, actually. To expose Japanese youth to a game that is very culturally important to asian cultures. So if you know about go because of that, I'd say it was a success.

Anime does that fairly frequently, to my knowledge: episodes will introduce the idea of the tea ceremony in the context of the characters going to one (often comically), or someone's mistakes of honorific language will be an excuse to present the correct ways of speaking to your elders, etc. There's such a huge tie-in, too, between merchandising and animation that I wouldn't be surprised to find a connection between cultural programs and animation.

I've never seen people play it, though I have heard of it, and I've read part of a weird manga about it. :] It looks like a game I wouldn't have the patience to play.
