Perseid Meteor Shower ~ Have you looked at the sky lately?
So after waking up at 2:30 a.m. and driving 45 minutes to and from the countryside, I have returned to my bed to wind down and get a couple more hours of sleep before work.
This year's Perseid meteor shower was pretty nice I'd say. I saw about 10 meteors in an hour, which is less than they predicted, but I assume that if I went out a bit further, I would have seen more of them. I went out just far enough to get rid of a good portion of light pollution. My digital camera sadly doesn't have a shutter speed adjustment function (LAME!!!) so I doubt the night scene setting worked all that well. You really need a very long exposure to get good shots, so we'll see how they come out. I wasn't all that impressed looking at them on the camera. It's late and I just realized I'm rambling. So, discuss: • Did you watch the Perseid meteor shower this year? • Did you try to take any photos? How'd they turn out? • General stories about getting up in the middle of the night on a workday to do random things like watch meteor showers |
..There was a meteor shower?
D: |
I can't see much here because of the light pollution. I was walking back from the bar a few months ago and there was a shower and I just stopped and watched it for a while since it's been a long time since I saw one. Normally though you can't see much.

I'm lucky to see the moon from my house on most nights. The trees cover it up. XD As for stars, there's a ton of light pollution...and other pollution...>.> Sometimes I can get a really good look at the night sky, but mostly it's just...not that much. I didn't know about the meteor shower, though I wouldn't have been able to see it anyway since it's been really rainy.

Oh yeah. I really wanted to see that.. But I had to go to sleep earlier than normal. I went to sleep around 10pm. Had to get up at 6am for a 8 mile hike that took 8-9 hours to complete. The views were awesome..

I live in the middle of no where, and I can always see the sky..me and my friends waited up to see it. But I feel asleep! One of this days I will be able to see a meteor shower.

While we don't really have much light pollution where i am (the advantages of living on a hill above everyone) the sky was far to cloudy to have seen anything. I'd love to catch a spectacle like that in full though. i think the last time i saw anything half decent, was about 10 years ago, at a school disco when i was 9 or 10.
It was just one shooting star, red in colour, and i managed to see it for all of five seconds. |
I saw a few shooting stars, but I didn't stay watching for long.

I had a great time watching the sky on Saturday night. My family owns a bit of land up in the mountains, so I slept over there on Saturday. Both my mother and I dragged some lounge chairs out to the middle of a field and watched the sky from around 10 - 11:30. I'd say that it was well worth it. I saw about 8 meteors! Most were faint, but 2 completely lit up the sky.
I also spotted a couple satellites. I've always thought they were pretty funny, going across the sky so fast. |
I sat outside on the porch the first night to watch it. I wasn't sitting outside for that long seeing as I was pretty tired. Though I did see about five meteors in about twenty minutes :3. One of them was REALLY bright and long *o*, it was amazing. I love watching meteor showers. I've seen a few of them within the last couple of years ^-^.
Out where I live, you can see the WHOLE night sky. I don't live in a big city, in a town with lots of pollution. So living in the middle of no where does have it's advantages :3 |
