So earlier, my (younger) sister taught me about Silly Bandz

They're a shape of something, and no matter how much you wear them, when you take them off, they stay in that shape. I tested this idea, and it's true. Her Silly Band went right back to the perfect little cross that it was before I put it on.

•Silly Bandz

P.S; I still think they're ugly when you wear them.

Prussia The Awesome 09-02-2010 02:09 AM

Meh, I've put a few on before, nothing special really. They're going out of style around here, so I don't see too many of them anymore. I remember seeing people with Silly Bandz all up and down their arms, holy cow, that's a lot.

Keyori 09-02-2010 02:21 AM

There's a thread about this in the debate forum discussing whether or not they're "dangerous" xD

I still haven't seen them in person, but I imagine they're the fad replacement of jelly bracelets. Before that was karma bead bracelets. And before that was slap-band bracelets.

Dream-Crystals 09-02-2010 02:33 AM

In the words of my best friend, "Silly Bandz are the new plague". Sometimes I think he was right, almost every single person I see where I is wearing one. I have a few myself, but they were given to me. Some of them don't even look like they're supposed to...I got a bunch of deformed silly bandz.

What about silly band RINGS? So small it fits your finger? Its amazing. I wonder if necklaces are next?

Sho-Shonojo 09-02-2010 03:44 AM

I really don't understand the fad. Why would you wear the bracelet if the only way you could see the shape is if you're not wearing it? I remember my sister got her first one months ago. I didn't hear about them for a while and then their popularity just exploded. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Estrella 09-02-2010 03:53 AM

I had to look up what Silly Bandz are.

I honestly had no idea. :o

I've never heard of them and never seen them.

I must be old, though, 'cause I do remember slap bracelets. xD

Yea, I heard something about them being too tight for your arm.

That's just ridiculous. :/

Exactly what I was thinking!!

zigbigadorlube 09-02-2010 09:59 PM

I think they're an overly expensive fad. You pay like $6 for a pack of those stupid little things that probably only take pennies to make... V_V

Mystic 09-02-2010 10:07 PM

I also think that they're way too overpriced. Kind of like Pogs. At least with Pogs you could actually play with them

JujuBean 09-02-2010 11:04 PM

Some of the girls wear them to band and they're in the shapes of the insturments they play. I've also seen them around in school, but they were never really that popular to begin with in my town. :\

Exiled 09-03-2010 03:00 AM

I got some while visiting my boyfriend.
See, my boyfriend lives 1,000 miles away. And it's extremely difficult to actually visit each other since... we're pretty much broke. So anyway, I took a flight and visited him. Near the end of my trip, his mother brought home several packs of silly bands. She said it was popular at her school (she's a teacher) so she picked up some from a dollar store in case we wanted them. I thought they were kinda silly at first, and I didn't really like them. But I thought "Hey, I can give these to my nieces and nephews when I get home," so I chose a couple packs to keep.
Emotional trip home, blah blah blah, fast forward. >.>
In the end, I gave my nieces and nephews a few, but I kept most of them. They mean a lot more to me than I thought they would. And I also found out... that I like silly bands after all. xD Now mind you, I don't go overboard with them. I wear like 6 of my favorite ones. The rest I keep hidden away.

Tl;dr: I liek dem silly bands. :D

Moogle 09-03-2010 03:46 AM

[email protected]'s post.

But I think they're important to you because your boyfriend's mom gave them to you, so they have some sentimental value, ya know? I can understand that.

Yume.No.Tenshi 09-03-2010 03:56 AM

They're actually banned, from the elementary schools at least, in my hometown. because kids were busy with them and not the teacher. I never really understood what was so awesome about them, other than the fact they regain their shape when you take them off. But what about when you wear them? I just don't get it.

That said, of course, I have to point out that part of my personality is to not aquire something unless they actually serve a purpose. Jewelry, when I buy that, it's because they look pretty and delicate. Jelly bands of any type, be they silly or not, just never made sense to me.

i rawr u <3 09-03-2010 04:44 AM

They're okay to me. I have a two sets of them..... I don't wear them all the time, but they're sort of...... cute. Yanno? Just makes my outfit seem more fun. 8D
I don't wear them often at allll. For bracelets, I usually wear my totally awesome neon colored braceletsss.~~~
But, yeah. Overall, I've got nothing against them.

Yeah, it reminds me of that day and the visit with him. xD I have sentimental value all wrapped up with my silly bands.

But besides that, after I got used to them, I actually think they're pretty cute. They can be pretty much any shape, so you can pick and choose your favorites and trade the extras you don't like. I dunno. There's not much to explain other than that it's just personal preference whether or not you like them.
I'd been homeschooled all my life and am now going to a community college where they're NOT popular, though, so I've never had any personal experience with them being a fad... so that's probably partly why I like them. I'm probably considered the "rebel" for wearing them, actually. >.> One of my friends asked "Uhm, why do you wear those?" And I was like "Just because I like them, so what?"

I do agree, though, that when you wear dozens and dozens of them, it gets pretty ridiculous. My nieces do that. But they're just kids, so I say let them have their fun with silly bands. xD

Clarise 09-03-2010 02:34 PM

I can understand liking a particular one for sentimental value...I mean, how many of us keep the stupidest things hanging around just because someone gave them to us and we think it was a special gesture (mine is a coffee mug from the dollar store that my supervisor at my first "real" job gave me for Christmas).

But, whenever things turn into fads, I tend to start to hate them, no matter how I initially felt about the item. I've never been one for fads, though, and they tend to really only plague elementary school age kids where I'm from. The last ones I remember happening around me were those digi-pet things and furbies. I had no idea that these bands even existed until my younger sister (who was a senior in high school last year) told me about them when I was on break from college. I really didn't understand what they were, then when I saw one, I couldn't understand why anyone would want one. Maybe if you were in 5th grade and still thought that plastic jewelry from the dollar store was cool, but other than that....

Moogle 09-03-2010 02:56 PM

I had a furby, although I never asked for one. It didn't interest me much at all, and started to creep me out just a little bit. So it's in the backroom just sitting there now.

And I agree with you on the fads thing. I don't really like when they become fads either.

Clair Voyant 09-03-2010 03:54 PM

*raises hand guiltily* Clair wears them. Only on one wrist, though. And just enough to cover a nasty scar there. (No, Clair is NOT and has NEVER been a cutter... but the scar makes her look like one). They look "normal" when she wears them, as other people wear them often, so, it doesn't seem out of place. It's a "clever", easy way to cover up her scar. When she realized that they were perfect for covering up and blending in without seeming like she was trying to hide something, Clair got a pack for herself. No, she doesn't trade or go out of her way to buy more packets... but she will admit, she has a few favorites. >.>

Moogle 09-03-2010 05:14 PM

lol.
Well, at least you still have a solid reason for wearing them.

Claire 09-03-2010 09:01 PM

I guess they were in for a month or two.
They really died down in the summer, probably because nobody was in school.
I wear one or two when I feel like it, usually I don't wear them though.
They're rubbery bracelets....
I'd rather wear a real bracelet.

I've noticed a lot of elementary and middle school students wearing them where I live. They were slightly popular at my high school for a while too, but I don't think most people here really even care about trends like that anymore. xD

They really don't annoy me as much as some trends do, though. I don't wear them myself, but it is kind of interesting to see all the shapes that people have them in these days.

I only saw them around the summer time here. And yea, I agree with the bolded statement.

Yea, I'm not gonna lie, it makes me kinda curious as to what they are when they're not being worn.

I think it's fun to see the different shapes. Some look really well made, whereas others... look nothing like what they're supposed to be. Sometimes you're left wondering "what the heck?" I guess it just depends on the company that makes them.

I'll tell you what a few of mine are. Some of mine are dinosaurs (those are actually sparkly and glow-in-the-dark, haha), some are anchors and swords, one I have is a pirate ship but it's facing forward so you can barely tell that it's supposed to be a pirate ship... and one is a rose. The rest are mainly animals like sharks, seahorses, cats, kangaroos and so on.

If the person only wears his/her favorites, the silly bands can actually tell a little bit about the person. That is, if you ever got to see the shapes off the person's wrist. xD

Clair Voyant 09-04-2010 02:21 PM

@ Claire::
Clair would rather wear real bracelettes, too. 'Cept her wrists are too thin and it's hard to find bracelettes that fit correctly.

And they really got popular here in summer. :/

R. Wiggly 09-04-2010 02:29 PM

So something I haven't noticed anyone mention...they were originally supposed to be just fun rubber bands, and then the creator discovered kids were wearing them as bracelets.
