I am a fan of fish. So I have a few fish tanks. One 29 gallon, one 10 gallon (quarantine tank) and a Fluval Edge 6 Gallon tank. In my big one I have two angel fish, a gold gourami, an opaline gourami, some glowlite tetras, and three tiger barbs. I have an eel in there too but he doesn't come out much.

Do you have a fish tank? What kind of fish do you like? Or do you just like fish in genreal? I don't know. So you should tell me! Ready? GO!

A lot of fish for a 29 gallon. O.o; I love the Fluval Edges. I always thought they looked nice set up. It's just too bad there's not really much you can put in a 6 gallon tank. I was tempted to buy one and set up a planted tank with a betta in it. I still want to do some drift wood and stuff like that in it with some java moss and some swords, although swords would get pretty big for that small of a tank.

I have this weird obsession with fish. I used to work at a pet store and plan on opening my own fish store with in the next few years. I just need the money for the building and the filtration systems. I would always get mad when people tried to put fish like bala sharks which can get over a foot, in a 10 gallon tank. It's inhumane in my opinion because they get all sorts of health problems and pretty much die a slow painful death. Another thing that really pissed me off is people trying to keep goldfish or any other fish in a bowl. You just can not do it. I mean a betta can "live" in a bowl but they are a tropical fish and should NOT be kept at room temperature and should have at least 4 gallons per betta. You would not believe how many people returned dead goldfish after I told them they're going to die in a bowl and basically just suffocate and die a slow death. People are so selfish sometimes.

I love cichlids. Africans to be more exact. Acaras are pretty as well. I also have a soft spot for Earthearters. Oscars are another favorite of mine. They're just too cute. I don't care for angel fish or goldfish too much though. Although a full sized foot long goldfish is pretty impressive to look at. I love big fish. I just think it's amazing that something that starts off less than an inch can grow into something so huge. I also think that fish have intelligence that most people don't realize.

As far as saltwater goes, I love pacula clownfish and tomato clowns. I know they're pretty much a "throw away" fish but I love them to death. I had a 55 gallon reef tank and just had 4 clowns in there and a few firefish, cleaner shrimp, and peppermint shrimp along with a bunch of crap that came on the live rock. I would seriously sit there for hours and just watch the critters on the rocks. There would always be something new popping up and it's interesting to me. I lost power and lost the whole tank. I was crushed. They were my babies and it still upsets me that I lost all that. That was about two years ago. I never could bear to set up another salt water tank. I keep wanting to, although right now I have a bearded dragon in that tank.

For brackish fish, I always liked Monos. The store I used to work at used to carry them and keep them in fresh water. They'd almost always die so I set up a brackish tank to keep them from dying. It upset me so much that people that didn't know jack about them could sell them to people that had freshwater tanks. They'd almost always come back dead when someone sold one. Luckily, they stopped carrying them. Those and dragon golbies, dwarf puffers, and silver tip sharks. It pissed me off that the company thought it was okay to keep them in fresh water when they are not fresh water fish.

As for other tanks I had, I had a 40 gallon with some ruby sharks that I ended up moving to a 180 gallon tank with some bala sharks and some moonlight gouramis. I also had a huge gold angel fish and a black vail. I used a Fluval canister filter with that tank. I had to break that down and sell my fish when I moved. I also had several other tanks that ranged from a 1 gallon on up to the 180 gallon.

I could go on and on about fish but I'm going to end my post. XD

4 years ago for Christmas we bought my mom a 120 gallon tank. She had two Paroon Sharks at the time so she needed something huge. Unfortunately we no longer have them, but our tank has so many lovely fish. Tetra's to Leprechauns, some Gouramis, a couple of Midas', I don't even know half the species. We have a huge Pleco named Spike (good 4-5 inches long I'd guess)

I love Plecos. Mine only got to be about 6 inches before I had to sell him. My one before that was over a foot. He was awesome. He lived to be about 15 years old. He used to freak my mom out when he got to be that big but I think he was one of my cooler fish. XD I want to breed and sell zebra plecos. They're so pretty and you never see them and when you do see them they're like $120 for a 2 inch one. O.o

When I was little we had a fishtank (forgot how big it was) that we used to keep many different fish. At first we just had a pleco, two coolie fish, and an angel fish. After the coolie and angelfish died, we made the mistake of putting two beta fish in the same tank. They killed each other in less than a day.

Then my dad wanted to get this huge fish called a grouper (i think) but after two months my mom got fed up with having to feed it tiny live fish. So we sold both that one and the pleco, and settled for a goldfish. It lived in our bedroom for about a year. Then my little sister thought it would be nice to take out some of the bigger rocks, color them with markers, and set them back in. After that one died, we sold the tank.

@Mystic - Wow! That's quite a collection! I'm sorry to hear about your saltwater tank :( I can imagine that would be a terrible loss. I'd probably cry. I've not tried a saltwater tank yet. I started 2 years ago and then only about a year and a half ago started getting more into it. I got my 29 gallon last January so I'm still a beginner to intermediate. I figure it would probably be a good idea to get really comfortable with freshwater before I try salt.

180 gallons is so big! I had to google it to see how big it is! That must have been an awesome tank! Bearded Dragons are lizards right? I don't really know much about them. I have a friend in Albuquerque NM that does lizards. Also I've never heard of Brackish water till now. I didn't know you could set up a tank like that. Maybe I'll try that next year before I try a full on salt water tank.

I've seen Cichlids in my pet store here but I feel they are a little over my experience level so I usually just look at their pretty colors:P

I agree the fluval edge tank is a little too small to really do much with it but I'm setting it up as a live plant aquarium and intend to put in some tetras or maybe something else equally as small. I just love so much how you can see in through the top of the tank!

@Syraannabelle - Paroon Sharks look really cool! How big do they get when they are all grown up? I really like tanks with many different varieties of fish. Those are the best kind I think. I tried raising plecos earlier last year and ended up quiting after the third one died >.<! I do know a girl at the pet store though that has one that's 10 or 12 inches long.

@Louis duLac - That's sorta how it started for me. We had a little hexagonal tank when I was much younger, can't even remember what kind of fish it had, but I remember how much fun it was and that's what got me back into it all these years later.

I've always sorta wondered about fish that eat other live fish as their diet. Did you have to keep a whole separate tank for the feeder fish? Or do you just go buy them when it's time to feed it?

Lol markers and fish didn't mix so well huh? Poor fishies...

In the wild they get up to 3.5 feet I think? they use chickens and the carcasses of small dogs to catch them. My moms were a foot I think, half a foot... almost a foot... Don't quote me on this... But they were huge. The problem is, unless your other fish are huge, the sharks eat them. We bought them feeder fish and shrimp pellets to eat, so they do get costly to feed after a while. Especially for the two of them, mom was buying fish every 4 days (our local fish store sell them for like 50 cents a fish, and mom would pick up like 20-40 fish)
They're amazing pets, very receptive. When they were small, mom would put her hand in the tank and they would swim to her finger and pet themselves on her finger. It was really cool to watch, at least until one of their dorsal fins cut her finger one day. There was some kind of antigen or something, that halted the clotting process. My moms finger bled for almost a full day, before it clotted. After that she just put her hand on the side of the tank, and they would purposefully swim next to the edge by her hand.

I have two 10 gallons and a 5 gallon fish tank, and also a few of the small one fish globe things, I have two betas right now, a boy and a girl, they hate each other but thats how betas are. I used to have 7 little newts with red bellys idk what they were called but they were no bigger then my pinky in one of the ten gallons and a turtle in the other. they had to find new homes when I moved because my apartment wont allow fish tanks.

I'm trying to remember the size of my tank now xD It's 3ft I know that much xD I think it's 21.1 gallons. I only have 3 fish now; a scissortail and 2 black neons, and they're all close to the end of their life span. Recently lost another black neon and 2 regular neons, but again just from old age. There's nowhere in this area to buy fish from any more, so I'm just waiting for these to die them the tank will be emptied and put under the stairs out of the way.

During the 10 years that I've kept fish I have developed some favourites. I had a beautiful red-tailed black shark, but he was an aggressive territorial shit! He used to terrorise a lovely big striped loach that I had because it was the only fish in the tank that was as big as him. I have a soft spot for albino coradoras, best bottom-feeders EVER! I had a lovely pleco once, he was very friendly and if I sat on the floor in front of the tank he'd come and sit right at the front of the tank and look at me, and he'd take algae tablets from my fingers. I had some beautiful fantail guppies that I used to handfeed too, they had babies which was pretty awesome =3 Seeing that first baby swimming round in the tank was a real OMG!! moment xD

I think clown loaches are really pretty, but I've never bought any myself, when I lived with my ex he bought one on several occasions, and every single one caught whitespot repeatedly, stopped we getting any in the end as they seem so prone to it. Same as Mollies, I love Dalmatian Mollies as they're so pretty, and they're dense xD I find they always come up to the glass if you tap really gently on it xD But that breed seems really whitespot prone too :(

I had some tiny aquatic frogs at one point, after some research I found out that fishtanks are less than ideal for them though as they are delicate and need filtration with a really gentle flow, and it's far better to have a frog tank with maybe a couple of very placid fish in it, than to have frogs in a fish tank. Also they were really stupid when it came to food. I ended up having to hand feed them after 2 of them died, because unless you waved the food right in front of their noses they never found it!

@Car'a'Carn: Yea, it was thousands of dollars lost. I wasn't as upset over the money lost as I was the fish. I get overly attached to my pets. Saltwater you really really have to research anything, and I mean anything before you buy it. Do not go by what petstores tell you. They don't know crap. Saltwater is a lot of work but it's worth it. It's really expensive to set up a decent sized tank too.

Yep, Bearded dragons are lizards. I have five now which is why I have no fish at the moment. XD I love the dragons to bits though.

Brackish tanks can be a bit harder with balancing the proper salt without it being too fresh or too salty.

Chiclids I'd consider an intermediate fish just because you have to be careful what ones you put together. They get pretty aggressive and will kill each other if you crow them and do not give them enough territory. Always use driftwood with a lot of holes and hiding places and large tanks and they do pretty well. They're easy to care for and have some amazing colours if you want the saltwater fish feel but with less work.

@Jelly: I absolutely love clown loaches! They are just about the cutest things with their lil mouths and all. I love watching them eat. I used to breed cory catfish and still love them as well. I have a weird thing for bottom dwellers. It's the mouths and whiskers they tend to have. It's just too cute to me.

@Syraannabelle - Jeez... 3 and a half feet is big! They sound like hungry buggers too! Seriously? She got cut by the dorsal fins? Are they serrated or just that sharp? Good thing it finally stopped bleeding. I would have freaked out a little :gonk:

@Ahriean - I love betas. I had one for a couple of years before it got sick and died :/ It was really pretty though. Hmm... Maybe I should get one for the fluval edge tank I have! That would look pretty cool in there. Thanks for the idea! Turtles are cool. My moms friend down in CA has two Desert Tortoises that she cares for. They sound really neat. Sucks that your apartment won't allow tanks :( I'd be really sad if I had to get rid of mine.

@jellysundae - Wow that's really cool that you've got so many old fish! the four oldest I have in my tank are only about a year old. I was so amazed one day when I came home and looked at my angelfish and realized just how big they had grown from the tiny 1 inch size they used to be when I got them. Caring for a fish for the full term of it's life is kinda exciting to me mostly because the first year I started doing aquariums I had fish die quite often from mistakes in care.

Red-tailed black sharks are quite pretty I think. Lol I had a problem for a while with a tiger barb pestering other fish in my tank. But then they got bigger than him and he left them alone :XD That's awesome that your guppies had babies! one of my angelfish lays eggs all the time. I'm considering putting them into a separate tank to see if they will have kids.

I like Loaches a lot and really want to get a clown loach but They get so big! I'll have to wait till I get a bigger tank someday to get one. You know I've never been able to keep a molly for longer then a month or two before it dies? Mine always got cotton mouth. Non of the other fish I had in with it ever had a problem. I could never figure out why they kept getting sick so I just stopped getting them. I really like fish that aren't afraid of you. My two angles are the only ones that like to come up to the glass to see me. They gouramis just run away

@Mystic - That's good to know. I thought Brackish tanks might be easier but I guess I'll go straight to salt when I try! Lol Yea I've had a few times when I talked to petstore people where they didn't know exactly what they were talking about. at least it never led to one of my fish dying! Well I might just consider getting some chiclids next tank I do. The thing that always stopped me was that everyone I talked to said they are just so aggressive and that they will eat my other fish...

They will eat your other fish if you put them in with semi aggressives/community fish or goldfish. You just have to do research about what types can go in with each other. In general, most African cichlids can be housed together and you want to keep South Americans together. I consider Oscars to be Spieces only, meaning you should never house them with anything besides other oscars because it's stressful for them or they'll just eat the other fish.

I would not do cichlids in anything less than a 55 gallon personally just because for Africans most get between 6-8inches and that's a big fish for anything smaller. I keep at least 10 gallons per cichlid in a 55gallon or larger. The more hiding places, the happier the fish will be and they'll be less likely to eat each other as well.

@Mystic - Thank you for the good advice! How long have you been doing aquariums for? I actually was thinking of getting a 50 gallon or bigger tank later on next year so maybe I'll do a Cichlid tank! (after plenty of research...)

@Fahst - Aww... That's terrible! It always sucks when apartments have ristrictions like that :/

Found out what the big fish was really called; an oscar fish. We didn't keep a separate tank for feeder fish at the time because of the size of the house we had. Me and my sister slept on a bunk bed with the tank taking the rest of our room. My mom liked the oscar fish, she just didn't like feeding it live fish.

Car'a'Carn: I've kept fish for over 20 years now. I've always had an obsession with them and read everything I can about them. A lot of stuff I know from experience as well. Sometimes books tell you one thing and it doesn't quite work that way in real life or there's just a better way of doing things. Aquariums just relax me so I've always tried to at least keep one or two going. I haven't had a tank in about six months now though and I really miss it.

I like digital fish so I won't forget to feed them.

I swear those fish in that small tank (I had a something, neon taillight or whatever, my step-brother
had one too, and my little brother had two brown striped fish) (the fish came from Wal-Mart) lived a
good long time, considering that I was only at Dad's two weekends a month and I heard "Oh I forgot to
feed them" from everyone so often. Although maybe my little brother was feeding them. I will never
forgive myself for giving up on them two weekends in a row - then a weekend or two after that I
was like "Where are the fish?" and Dad was like "They're gone."

In an old fish book that I have somewhere it says that if you go away for a fortnight your fish will be fine with no food for that time. I wonder if anyone asked the poor fish! They might survive after being starved for two weeks but I can't see them being very happy about it!

@Louis duLac - Oh ok! I like Oscars. of the ones I have seen so far they look really pretty! And I am there with your mom. I would have a hard time feeding fish to other fish. Probably the reason I will never own a fish that requires that diet! :XD

@The N00B Goddess - You could! But I woul be all :ninja: and sneak into your house to steal them back. Aw, that sucks. I often had joint pets with my older brother but since he was older they would always be in his room so I didn't get to play with them very much (cause he would never let me in) so they either died or were givin away >.<! Digital fish are a lot of fun though. I like to play with virtual tanks a lot. Insane Aquarium is always a fun game to play :P

@Killer Wifey - I agree! Guppies are very pretty. I like sucker fish a lot too but I just can't seem to keep them alive >.<! Nemo!!! :eager: *goes off to watch Finding Nemo*

@Mystic - Oh wow! That's a lot of experience! Well 2 years down, 18 to go! :XD

@jellysundae - No kidding! I went away for like 10 days once about a year ago and I stuck a feeder block in my tank cause I was afraid of leaving them without food. Good knowledge for an emergancy situation though!

I'll have to try and take some pictures of my fish in the next few days and put them up in here.
