I do background checks and home visits before I adopt out any animals that I rescue. I really don't like the fact that people do those "free to a good home" ads and what not. I've heard of people even getting free kittens and puppies for snake food for large constrictors or using them for dog baiting. It's pathetic what people do to animals. Back when I worked in the city, there was a call that came in about a man that wanted to "punish" his kitten by shoving his face in an open flame on a stove and another one about when someone threw a kitten on a hot grill. Those were two that really stood out to me. There was some crazy stories and things that I saw and heard about there.
I agree 100% on "mass producing" pets. Any sort of "mill" situation is horrible whether it be dogs or other companion pets. So many of the pets that came from the breeders ended up sick or having to be put down due to illness. It was mostly upper respiratory with small pets and the Jenday conures always had crop infections. Luckily, I worked at a pet store that actually took care of their pets and let me take them to the vet when they needed to go. |
=/ Also, don't forget that the dog's breed also affects it's ability to get adopted. The puppy I mentioned earlier, was a lab/pitbull mix. She literally had no where to go because as soon as they found out she had pitbull in her, nobody wanted her. Especially since I live in the south, where alot of dog fighting goes on. [Let those bastards be found by me and see what I'd so...] So, for a long time, I couldn't find my darling pup a home due to her breed and colour. She's black. There's hundreds of black lab/pits in shelters. I was told flat out that she'd probably be put to sleep. And I couldn't accept that. I just couldn't. She'd be such a fighter, battling neglect, starvation and sickness...only to be put to sleep? No way. So, I fought everyone, even my dad- who flipped out when he found out she had pitbull. And finally, I just kept her myself. She bonded to me and it's obvious that she's my dog. Lol. But, it's sad how people hear that certain dogs are this breed or this colour and suddenly, they can't help them.

I was fostering a pit before and had her in a PetSmart. This little old lady wanted to pet her so I said okay since she was super friendly. She was only around 8 weeks old and the lady asked what kind of dog she was. I told her a pit and she immediately stopped petting her and told me I should not bring such a viscous dog breed in to a public setting. I was like "Really, just a minute ago you were fine with her". Here there's the same problem with pits, American bull dogs, rots, and mastiffs. There's way too much dog fighting going on so to be on the safe side they euthanize them. It's really sad.

Lol. That's what happened when my dad found out that my dog had pit. He was playing with her, and then...bam, found out and he wouldn't go near her. It's so stupid. =/
