Starling.Blackwood: You were using it in a derogatory manner, because it's a derogatory word. From your own link:

It's not a positive word. It cannot be a positive word. It's an insulting and offensive word. It has no relevant meaning that is not insulting or offensive. Unless you are a British person and you are talking about cigarettes, it's completely inappropriate. If you're chatting with your friends, speak however you wish. On the internet, if someone tells you a word is offensive, apologize and stop using it.

Okay then.

I find the word 'British' offensive. So you would have to apologize to me and stop using it.

Really, if you don't like it, then leave the thread. It is that simple.

There are more definitions for fag than just cigarette and homosexual,

fag1    /fæg/ Show Spelled
[fag] Show IPA
verb, fagged, fag·ging, noun
–verb (used with object)
1. to tire or weary by labor; exhaust (often fol. by out ): The long climb fagged us out.
2. British . to require (a younger public-school pupil) to do menial chores.
3. Nautical . to fray or unlay the end of (a rope).
–verb (used without object)
4. Chiefly British . to work until wearied; work hard: to fag away at french.
5. British Informal . to do menial chores for an older public-school pupil.
–noun
6. Slang . a cigarette.
7. a fag end, as of cloth.
8. a rough or defective spot in a woven fabric; blemish; flaw.
9. Chiefly British . drudgery; toil.
10. British Informal . a younger pupil in a British public school required to perform certain menial tasks for, and submit to the hazing of, an older pupil.
11. a drudge.

The ONLY reason it even has a derogatory definition is because people use it that way. The reason people use it as an insult is because people give it power by letting the opinions of some prejudice jerk matter to them.
Like I said before, when I use the word casually, it takes power away from the word and makes it meaningless.
Additionally, if fag means homosexual, then what is wrong with it? There is nothing wrong with being a homosexual, so why would the term 'fag' be offensive?
It is only offensive if used to be offensive.
I am a fag. I am proud to be a fag, so I'm going to use the word as I please, and if you don't like it, leave the thread.

i think there is a total of 4 openly gay guys in my school. And i think 3 open lesbians. i have absolutely nothing against gay people. I think they are cool for being so independent and not caring what people think of their sexuality. No one bullies them. We have grown up in generally nice area, so people arent really judged. I mean i know a few homophobic people that are here, but they keep it to themselves and try to avoid them, not out of rudeness, just so they avoid saying anything rude to them. The most common reason people are homophobic is because of their religion. Its how they were raised...adam and eve. thats just how its supposed to be. and i completely respect that too:)

Sounds nice.

Around here, it's either over-the-top liberal gay or gay loving folk, or skin-head gangsters who think being gay is a choice and 'the wrong choice'

The tension is ALWAYS there, but on the up-side we don't have as much violence as we once did because the cops are always hanging around.

hmm... well i know that word can be a touchy subject for some people. *shrugs*
i'm not sure how many people in my school were "not straite". I'm sure there was a lot considering my graduating class had over 300 students in it. i was only aware of 3. two guys and one girl. They were pretty cool people. One of the guys was a really smart kid, though he was annoying at times but a nice guy non the less. =) i think we did a pretty good job of getting along with each other at my school, but i'm sure they had their share of school drama like everyone else did. =3 but over all i think I had a pretty accepting school atmosphere. I like to accept people as they are regardless of religion, ethnic background, gender or orientation. though if the personality doesn't mess well with mine, it isn't all that good for me.

it is nice. i mean on occasion we will have that one kid that happens to come up in conversaton(who would be gay)and there be homophobic person around listening...and it might get nasty. but most of the time we just live in peace.

and yeah, we only have one school cop. but we live in a MEGA SAFE town. so we dont really have delinquents in our school that cause riots and such.

We had 'the Constie' as he was affectionately called by the student-body, he was our school officer. But we lived in a shady area downtown, so the police would make almost hourly drive-by's to make sure everything was 'cool'.

ohh. sounds a bit scary. did anything really bad ever happen?
about a year ago at our school there was a shooting and 5 kids were killed and 6 severly injured. it was the first truly horrible thing that ever happened in our town. other wise its just car accidents and things being stolen by the bad kids.

in grade 10 some druggie broke into the school at night and torched our library... 2 million dollars up in smoke.
We had one of fire extinguishers held in an unlocked case, he stole that thinking we wouldn't be able to use it to put out the fire.
And he stole a ton of chips and candy from a vending machine, and walked out the front door to meet the cops and firefighters come to find out why the school was smoking.
Lucky for us we have insurance, and the guy was an idiot XD

Also some guy was found in the girls bathroom in the elementary wing once, an adult who didn't attend or work at the school, but he didn't do anything, when he was found he took off.

and a crazy person who escaped from the mental ward of the hospital across the street used the school as a detour to get away. We were in lockdown for 4 hours, and he was in the school for about 20 seconds XD

other than that nothing serious happened... while I was there anyway.

Hmm...and they all hated each other because of clashing personalities. Yup. Sounds a lot like the girls at my school. Maybe it's just a feminine thing...

o.o You go to a very interesting school.

Wow. I don't think I've ever been to a school like that. And nowadays in my school, almost every popular girl has a GBF-Gay Best Friend. It's kind of weird though, how we switched from the jocks to the gays, but we don't go out with them, we're just friendlier than we would have been.

Yeah... I do. It got to the point where wheneevr a cop or firefighter shows up we just say 'Hey Ben, same time next week?'
Not literally mind you, but it feels that way.
And not all gay guys are feminine, we had one gay guy who was rather masculine, no one knew he was gay until he took his guy to the grad party. His 'older guy from university'

bragging jerkhole XD

I've noticed that a lot of gay guys have become accessories to certain girls, 'my gay friend, he's such a great shopping partner!' it's kind of annoying, I mean, he can do what he wants with you, but it would be a bit more respectful to not talk about him like he's the latest kind of cell phone.

but that kind of thing is bleeding onto the lesbian culture as well, I noticed a lot of high school girls are getting 'lesbian friends', and mostly use them to get attention from boys, because they think that the guys think if you have a lesbian friend there is a possibility of a three-way.

Which annoyed me because in high school I was that lesbian, and several of my friends (and in one unfortunate case, a girlfriend) were basically using me to suggest something about their personality to some guy they wanted to hook up with.

Not that this is the case everywhere, but around here it is rather common.

I know a few over-the-top gay guys ^_^ We didn't go to the same school together because a couple are younger than me, and some others live in a completely different town and state. But the ones nearby didn't always get along, ribbing each other and the like. But I've found that in some ways, it's sooooo much more comfortable to be friends with gays/bis/lezzies than straight people because you can say something completely random and suggestive, and they won't go OMG YOU PERV!!! In other words, you can be more open since they're so open themselves ^.^ Like, my gay friends instantly knew I was bi, without me ever saying anything about it, which actually didn't seem weird or strange at all.

one of my very best friends is gay...yeah, he's the most fun person I know:3

You have NO idea how happy I am to read 'most fun' instead of 'funnest', I've been dealing with ignorant hicks all day who complain that our pharmacy staff 'can't speak English' because they have thicker accents, while these hicks cannot even spell 'Pharmacy'

All the gays and lesbians I whent to school with stayed in the closet, just like I stayed in the closet about being trans. It's not exactly an open subject here. It was one of those things that all your friends knew but never said anything, like my friend Chris. Even when he dated Stacey, we all knew he was gay but never said anything. Years after high school he finally came out. For the most part my school was very red neck heterosexual lol.
