Languages anyone?

It's me again:3

Do you speak any languages other than your original?
I'm from the UK, so I came to America speaking french about a year ago:3
I also speak a bit of spanish, learned from a few of my spanish speaking friends.
I learned french when I was really little, because my whole family speaks it fluently:3
I speak it around the house and when I go back to Europe in the summer.
I was just curious to know if anyone on here speaks any language besides english, because I think that it might be common!

Well, I grew up in denmark, so of course i speak danish fluently. My mother is persian, so I also speak that fluently. As a kid i watched cartoon network in english, so I learned english from that (and later we had it in school too, but i was already fluent and way ahead of everyone). After I moved to america, I took french for four years in high school, although I'm not even close to fluent in that. I understand, and can converse, but that's about it.

My dad and I are planning to move to brazil in 4 years, so I'm starting portuguese classes this january.
As a side note, because I know danish, I can understand other scandinavian languages too, such as norwegian and swedish, but I don't count those.

LoveAria 11-15-2010 02:11 PM

nice!! my mother is norwegian, but I never got around to learning that language.

English is my first language (Canadian), and I'm fluent in Japanese. Other than that I know bits and pieces of Spanish, French and Gaelic

Rainy Day 11-15-2010 04:12 PM

English is my first language. I used to speak enough French that I reckon I'd have been able to get by on my own in France pretty easily, but I haven't practised it in ages. I'm currently learning Japanese. I learnt basic Spanish at school as well as French, so I can now read enough of that to puzzle out stuff like safety instructions? Haha. I can't speak Spanish at all any more, though - I've completely forgotten all I used to know. I could maybe introduce myself and I remember how to say that various parts of my body hurt, but that's all. ;;

I really love languages, and I'd like to learn many more when I have the time. Once I've finished university, I'm thinking about taking evening classes in German if I can afford it.

English is my first language. I can speak a very little bit of Japanese and understand it most the time when people speak it. I can also understand quite a bit of French and Spanish. I can't speak a lot of French or Spanish though.

Kaizy-Kat 11-15-2010 06:50 PM

English is my first language and the one that I am fluent in. I know a lot of Latin American Spanish, but I'm far from fluent. I can read and write it well, but my auditory and speaking skills are quite poor.

I'm also fluent in profanity and sarcasm. ;)

Thoth Star 11-15-2010 08:50 PM

I only know a little German, I'm definitely not fluent, but working on it. ^^

Ebil 11-15-2010 08:58 PM

English is my mother tongue, I learnt French at school from when I was 7 years old and Latin from 8 years old. You didn't get a choice at my first school, everyone just had to.
Then I moved to Indonesia when I was 10 years old and learned Indonesian for 6 years.
Came back to England and went to an American school where I had to take Spanish (it was that or German and the German accent just seemed impossible to me).
Carried on with Spanish at University until the Spanish teacher quit in my second year and they told us they weren't getting another Spanish teacher, so we could do Italian or German. So I went with Italian.

Now after a few years of not having to study any of them, and not going anywhere other than English speaking countries in recent years, I can't say I remember much of any of them >.<
I'd probably pick up Indonesian again if I spent some time there, but Spanish, French and Italian have all merged into a blur in my mind. As for Latin, that was just pointless, and I have no idea what the point of spending 2 years on that was o_0

BinkaKitty 11-16-2010 01:16 AM

i took japanese in high school and i'm also retaking it this semester of college. honestly, i'm not that good at it, but i know some of the basics. unfortunately for me, memorizing the sentence structure is very hard.

LoveAria 11-16-2010 01:56 AM

I kinda want to learn german. I speak bits and pieces of italian, but nothing that will ever get me by in italy. English is my second language, french being my first but I've always spoke both(making both my first languages?). I also want to learn Japanese, because it sounds quite interesting. My friend was taking Japanese for awhile and told me it was one of the harder languages to learn. I actually have a Japanese friend who moved to america about 4 years ago and now she speaks fluent english, but when she moved here she only spoke Japanese. She was telling me the other day that she had a hard time learning english because the words were really weird and shouldn't be pronounced the way that they are, or they aren't even spelled to make any sense. It was pretty funny listening to her talk about how frustrating the english was for her, and I started to wonder of other people thought that too:3

NekoSari 11-16-2010 06:19 AM

My native tongue is Mexican Spanish (since there's some differences between every variation of the language ) and my second is American English. I speak both equally fluently, so I guess I speak Spanglish *laughs* I'd really like to learn French and Gaelic though, mostly because I really like the way both languages sound ^_^

Lexus 11-16-2010 08:27 AM

I am originally from France, sadly I do not know any french word except for merci, bonjour, and oui...but, I can fluently speak Tagalog since I've been here in the Philippines for almost 20 years or so...I have also been studying a little bit of Japanese so I can speak and understand the basics

This. I would love to learn another language, but I don't have the time.

LoveAria 11-16-2010 11:31 PM

carzee: its really difficult to obtain multiple languages, I speak a total of 2 fluently, because I lost my skill in italian and norwegian. Spanish, forget it!

-The Half-Blood Princess- 11-17-2010 12:42 AM

English is my first language. Aside from that, I know probably a moderate amount of Latin and a little Japanese. I'm not fluent in any other languages, however.

LoveAria 11-17-2010 01:56 AM

A lot of people seem to know japanese...hmmm...

Bearzy 11-17-2010 02:45 AM

That's still pretty epic. I'd love to learn dutch because my family's from there, but I don't know where I could learn it.

Pa-pancake 11-17-2010 06:53 AM

I'm a Malaysian Chinese but I speak English most of the time.

I get nagged a lot by my bosses, clients and certain family members because I am not able to speak Cantonese properly even though its supposed to be by mothertongue/dialect.

I can speak Malay since it was forced upon us in school so I took tuition classes to improve. Though I think my Malay is terrible now and I speak in broken sentences.

I try my best to speak Japanese when I can. I watch enough anime, dramas and television chows to be able to understand what they are trying to say without subtitles so I can speak a little :)

Q U E E N 11-17-2010 10:29 PM

Oh god there are so many languages I know from constantly moving. (see Moving Across the World Thread) English is my first language, I'm Japanese so I know that, I also know from moving around so much, the following languages:

Chinese
Korean
Taiwanese
French
Russian
Vietnamese
Cantonese
Italian
Spanish
Portuguese(Brazil)

And a few others, I think. :)

robinhoodfan13 11-17-2010 11:03 PM

English is my first language and I was in French second year last year but due to scheduling I had to switch to first year Spanish. But I like both languages and I would love to learn Italian as well. Oh and I don't know if they count but I can speak and write pig latin, and gibberish I can speak, I have no idea how you would even begin to write it out though. Like I said not official languages but my friends and I and kids from their school use it all the time. Annoys adults to no end. Anyway I would love to learn more but there's only so much you can cram into my brain and have stick. If I could just throw out all things mathmatical but basic math then I think I could learn a lot more, but no...It's required if I want to graduate High School. :headdesk:

x_cannibalisticcows 11-18-2010 03:36 AM

I am just awful at languages, so I only speak, read, and write in English.

I'll be taking part in a student exchange program soon though! Maybe being dumped in a foreign country will kick my butt in gear and help me learn something. :]

YamiSora 11-18-2010 07:08 AM

Sora's pretty bad at languages.
His main one is English and knows a few words here and there in other languages.
Sora can still introduce himself in Japanese and read some hiragana.........but thats after 3 years in high school =3=

but yea, since Sora is going to be cosplaying as France soon from Hetalia, Sora is gonna try to learn some French ^^

Miss Eevee 11-19-2010 02:30 AM

Spanish was my first language, but i'm no longer fluent.
then English, then Japanese, and i'm currently learning Korean. (:

Sakubo 11-20-2010 03:32 PM

My first language is Arabic, English is my second language, I'm fluent in both of them, I also know bits of Italian, French, and Japanese.

Italian just because I rather liked the language and decided to learn it on my own, but I can barely understand anything, fail? yes way, French because one of my friends knew it and taught me the basics, Japanese, who said watching animes couldn't teach you anything? I understand what they say well half-half if I focus enough but it's still hard.
