Do people with glasses always get stereotyped as nerdy? Its kind of wierd how glasses are associated with smartness. Like in my school, if you get glasses, you are a nerd, even if you are fromthe popular group. I know its kind of harmless, but it really irritates me at the same time. I have glasses, and people don't call me nerdy in my face but I know they think I'm nerdy,

If people have glasses, are they immediately stereotyped as a nerd? What are your thoughts?

well I'm not stereotyped as being a nerd, even though I've worn glasses for 9 years... so not always.... I certainly don't stereotype people with glasses as being more intelligent.

I don't think so, but I don't really know. I was always considered a nerd even before I got the glasses.

Lots of people wear glasses, and lots of them are stupid. Lots of people who don't wear glasses are intelligent/nerds.

When I see someone with glasses, the only thing I assume is that they have some trouble seeing, particularly reading. Not everybody who reads is a nerd, either.

I think this is an old stereotype that really isn't commonplace anymore.

I've worn glasses ever since I was a child. I have a stigmatism. Where the shape of my eyes affect my vision.
Everything is blurry without them, so I am dependent on them. I refuse to use contacts, cause my eyes are sensitive. I don't like anything touching them. They'll feel itchy, like I've got an eyelash.

It always bothered me when people stereotyped me or someone else as a nerd for wearing glasses. We can't help that we need them to see. People are cruel and mean.

People who made fun of me, I ignored. They didn't deserve my attention for it.
My friends, if they asked me about it. I would have told them, if they're real good friends they wont judge me for who I am.
The ones who stayed are what matter, the others I could care less. I know it's harsh, but school and the world can be much harsher. That's just my philosophy, no one has to go by it if they're uncomfortable.

I've actually never been picked on for wearing glasses - it's about the only thing nobody's ever commented on! Maybe it's just different over here in the UK, but I've never heard of anyone getting picked on for wearing glasses, though I have heard a couple of kids worrying about it before they got theirs.

Haha, and wearing glasses doesn't really correspond to intelligence or nerdiness. I've known some glasses-wearing people who were thick as two short planks, and others (like my med student friend) who are highly intelligent but DEFINITELY not nerdy. Oh no. Doctorboi is hawt.

So uh, yeah. All stereotypes are dumb, but this one is particularly silly, because people's poor eyesight can be related to other things besides eye strain, such as stigmatism.

I've never gotten picked on for wearing glasses...But I've been wearing them since I was about 13/14...so maybe because I started wearing them as I was older?
/shrugs

As for "stereotypes" about wearing glasses in general, I think it's less about the glasses, and more about the "nerdy look" happening to include glasses, than glasses being nerdy. XP

"NERD"

"SOPHISTICATED"

I think glasses are a good way to "polish off" a look, in a very simple way.
I don't think people with glasses are more intelligent, but perhaps more "classy" looking.
But, I also sortof have a kink for glasses so I might be biased.

Glasses don't mean nerdy, or intelligent, or an otaku, or anything. Glasses mean a person can't see well enough on their own, so they require the help of a concave or convex lens. I guess that I'm just not one to stereotype so easily, but then again, I choose a peaceful outlook on people.

I have been called a nerd before people got to know me, just for my glasses. Only after they got to know me did they realize they were right about it. XD

On topic though, I agree with everyone else who says that its an outdated stereotype, and unfounded in modern times, or even past times really. xD

I know glasses only mean you have less than flawless vision

but I find that most people who wear glasses read more than most, probably because a lot of people need glasses to read so when they read we see them wearing them, but not any other time

But I find that by number alone people with glasses do tend to be a bit more indie and artistic, most of the people with glasses I know are artistic to some extent and like more indie music, so it's mostly just an observationally inspired stereotype stuck in my head

but I've known massive bimbo's who wear glasses so that's proof they do NOT make you smarter XD

Very few people with label someone with glasses a nerd. You just have to remember that it also depends on:
-The frame/style of glasses
-Purpose for wearing them

College kids these days will wear glasses, just because it's 'trendy', it also will throw them in a group known as "Hipsters" (Kids who wear older clothes/big thick frame black glasses whether they need them or not, actually just google the term and you'll get a general idea).

Nerdy is no longer associated with just glasses, they determine it based on what kind of glasses are being worn, what outfit is with the glasses, and the general personality of the person.

I had glasses in highschool but was never called 'nerdy', it all depends on the people you're around, and everything else I've mentioned. :)

Not always.

The idea of the glasses being a symbol of the nerd comes from the idea that people who wear glasses tire their eyes out by reading excessively.

My eyes are just screwed! :D
