----Okay, i'm just going to go ahead and say that there may be cursing in this thread, since i'm kinda opening the door to it with this subject----

Like my title says, when, if ever, would you curse or use offensive language?

For me, I curse like a sailor when I get angry. Around people i'm close to, I find myself frequently saying f--k, s--t, etc mindlessly. However, if i'm around someone I don't really know well, I don't curse at all, simply because I just don't feel comfortable enough around them.
It always bugs me when someone curses without thinking anything of it around people they don't know. For example, my friend Alex and I were walking around the mall once, when we ran into our mutual friend from school. Now, Alex is heavily religious. I love her to death, but I find that I have to restrict my language because just the word "suck" insults her. So, our mutual friend comes up and starts talking to us. We get in a joking argument, and he goes," You guys suck!" and laughed. I laughed too since I have no issue with it, but Alex was taken aback and walked away. He knows she's religious and that she would be offended by that, but yet he said it anyway which bothers me. I have many friends that don't tolerate cursing, and i've just learned to hold back when around them.

What about you?
When do you think it's acceptable to curse, if ever?
How often do you curse?
How do you feel about people that curse around those who are religious?

I like to curse a whole fucking lot. Online, most chat/forums sites have filters, and if you don't like cursing, just enable the censors.

I don't curse around children though, anyone younger than 13 and parents will probably kill me.

I don't usually have friends I can't curse around, not necessarily because of that, but I tend to like a lot of vulgar jokes, swearing, and other shit like that, and if they are offended by the word "fuck," I probably can't do any of that.

meh, Sora curses like a sailor when he gets angry too or upset.
Now that Sora thinks about it, he curses when he jokes around with friends too a lot.
the only time Sora really watches his mouth is when he's around people older than him (at least 10 years or older, depending on how they look) or kids.

I curse quite often, and I curse REALLY bad when I'm in a bad mood, or I've just hurt myself (kinda bad at that). I say a variety of different words when I'm angry. Though I also don't curse that often aloud, and mainly just to so when I'm more or less talking to myself and just need to vent. I also find myself cursing quite a lot when I roleplay as well. And I try to avoid cursing in front of my parents, just because I was taught not to do so because I would get in trouble for doing so. I'm old enough where they don't give a damn if I do or not, but I still try not to do so xD

Sorry no need to use that lang besides its so unoriginal. And very disrespectful. Ever video tape yourself cussing. Would if a child heard you say it. Oh wait would if your kids cussed you out in public. How would you feel because I have seen it before. Most disgusting language is profanity.

I find that I only really curse when I am frustrated or drunk...or if I have like hurt myself on accident, like stubbing my toe. I do say 'Oh my God' quite a bit, though I am trying to tone my frequency of using that phrase.

I curse here and there in normal speech, a bit more when I'm frustrated, less so if the person I'm talking to isn't one to do it himself, and not at all if I know someone around me is going to have a problem with it or when I'm talking to strangers.

I never ever curse. Why? Because I find that they are words people say when they can't find anything else to say. I also understand that curse words are used to express extreme emotion, but for me I choose to use a different vent system. The only time I really curse is when I'm writing. Sometimes a character requires a vulgar dialogue to build upon his/her personality, but it's the characters who say it, not me! xD

Also, since I don't curse I don't really offend anyone. However, it does bug me when people take offense to "ohmygod." In my eyes, I don't think God has a name nor would He care what people call him, as long as someone's not saying "I hate God" or something like that.

My city is a city where the English language is frequently peppered with cursing. I think that unless its kids doing it, and its around kids, that swearing should be accepted in casual social situations but of course, not in formal occasions such as dinners out, assemblies, meetings etc.

I've got so desensitised to cursing over the years, that I tend not to even notice when others do it anymore.
I do try to be aware when I'm cursing though, as I'm trying to break the habit.
Used to be that a good curse word every once in a while could make me feel better if I was angry, upset or injured, but now it's just become so ineffective as it's all overused so badly on a daily basis.
I kind of miss the days where it was taboo (to an extent) to say certain things.

I think if we took the stigma away from curse words they would have no affect on the generations in the future. Being told the word is bad is the only reason we think it's bad... If you taught your children that cellphones were evil and never used one and critisized the people on TV for using them, your child would think cell phones are evil... We are taught to be offended by these little minor things. I was raised with the idea that the only opinoins that matter are good ones so if someone says something mean its because they don't like you, if a friend says something bad they are not your friend.

I never curse, I feel like If I'm going to say something, may as well be something intelligent ;) (not really, but I'll say so XDD) But in all seriousness when someone swears I lose a bit of respect for that person. Not a LOT, but they kind of drop a grade in my mind. Like "Hey she's intelligent, we can have good conversations about important things" to "Oh someone who swears excessively, avoid conversation of possible." I don't do that the first time someone swears, but when they do it a lot it severly bothers me...

I swear like a sailor at times. XD I do swear all the time. I'm serious. Though I do hold back when my cousins or my grandparents or (insert anyone who would be offended here) are in the room. It's kind of funny, though, since I swear like a sailor around my friends, and they do the same around me. XD it's probably because of the lunch room that we were in when we were in school together. I swear you could hear the word 'f--k' every five to ten seconds from around the lunchroom. And as for religion... >.> Erm... I really have no comment there. But when I know that someone'll be offended, I hold back. I can understand about people who don't know, but if it's intentional, I can't say I have much respect for said person.

I curse like a sailor. All the time. The only time that I don't curse is when I'm around parents or adults, and sometimes I still let it slip.
I find cursing completely fine. As my Mom says, it's just a word. It up to you if you want to put meaning behind it.
I don't really feel it's rude to curse around religious people because it's something that society does. So long as you're not cursing at them, then I don't see why they should have a problem with it. I respect that they don't curse, but they should also respec that I do.

I usually don't say a lot curse words. One will slip from time to time but I usually find other ways to express myself. xD; There are two instances where I can't help cursing though: a) when I'm playing video games or b) while driving and people do stupid stuff. I don't know why but when I start playing games, my inner sailor comes out and takes over. @[email protected] Makes playing video games with a younger crowd challenging. As for driving, I know that I'm not the world's greatest driver or anything, but goodness, the things some people will do on the road are just...unnecessary. >___>;;

I swear sometimes. I swear more when I'm angry over something or when I am excited. I do say words like "sucks", "darn", "crap", and things that I do not consider "swearing". I honestly do not care if I offend someone. If I worried about that then I wouldn't be me. I do what makes me happy and if others don't like it then too bad. People are way too sensitive over stupid things like that.

However, I do not find it acceptable to swear in front of children. Children tend to repeat everything and I don't want someone like my cousin, who is 4 to say some of the things that I say. I hate how some parents swear at their kids. I think it's disturbing to say the least.

As for religious people, I honestly do not care. If they don't like it then they can walk away. I am not going to censor myself. I do tend to say whatever is on my mind and even without cursing a lot of it would probably offend someone who is overly religious anyway. I don't mean it to be disrespectful but honestly, that's just being too sensitive.

I completely agree with you.

If anything, I find that people who are overly sensitive will have a hard time working or getting along with people in general. People curse. You can't stop them from cursing. But taking each and everything they say personally is incredibly unhealthy and when you get offended by everything, that can get pretty annoying. :| No one should have to go out of their way to not offend you.

*All the "you"s stated here are used towards overly sensitive peeps. o3o

Cursing is not something I'm in the habit of doing, I let something slip every now and then but on whole I don't really like it much. I am bothered by excessive cursing when it's not necessary.

Example: F*** This, I've got a F***ing story, it's so F***ing cool that it's just like F***ing sweet, so I was F***ing going to the F***ing store for some S*** I like totally F***ing forgot right? And this F***ing old geezer who's in his F***ing 90's asked me where the....

One of my friends talks like this, it's casual conversation for him and I find it obnoxious because it makes him sound crass and unintelligent.

I only do it around friends. And not even that bad.
Most of the time, I'm just perverted in front of my friends.
But I never swear, nor am I perverted in front of kids about 11 years or younger, or any of my family members. ^ ^

I curse on a pretty regular basis. Namely when describing things, telling a story, or joking around with people. I rarely curse when angry so when I do, it's when something has absolutely crossed the line and I'm out of patience and ready to snap.

...Actually, the only person I swear in front of is my mom. XD God, my family is weird. Even then it's only rarely, and it's mainly because I'm surprised by something. I'm not comfortable swearing in front of people, because most of my friends don't swear very much, and I've noticed that excessive swearing is downright annoying. -.- I generally try to avoid offending people, so my friends don't tend to be overly religious. (I'm agnostic, so overly religious people bug me...As interesting as I find religion to be (irony!) I hate it when people force their religion on me, and try to make me see what they see...It's very irritating.)

I don't like swearing. One of the main reasons is that it clashes with the way I speak. XD You can't say "Oh shit, that was rather impolite!" without sounding like a complete moron. It simply cannot be done. And I talk very...politely? Properly. Dignified! Whatever it is, swearing just sounds strange combined with it.

I usually only cuss on accident, when I trip over something or hurt myself or something. I'm a complete klutz. XD I generally will stub my toe or trip and instantly blurt out "Fuck!" or "Shit!" or, the least dignified, "Fuck! Stupid goddamn table! *leaves room in a huff*". XD My usually "polite" speech does not apply here.

I am one of those people who tends to swear a lot. However, with me, its more just... my nature? For example, if its really cold outside (and I life in Montréal, it get quite frigid up here) a normal thing people will here come out of my mouth is, "Holy fuck! Its bloody fucking cold out!" Then again, being of a very strong Québecoise French influence, it tends to come with the territory. I don't think I have ever heard a set of people more verbally bashing than the Québecois.

At the same time, I don't tend to swear in front of children, but older people in my family are free game. Not that my Mom or Grandmother are particularly fond if it, but hey, its a word. Get over it.

Once again, its probably just the culture I have grown up in. Its very... different living in Québec. Culturally people just tend to swear a lot more often.

To me honestly, there is no such thing as a bad time to curse! LOL! I use the 'f' word so often that it has become ingrained as part of my every day vocabulary. Even though I'm not exactly cursing due to anger, its ust to express emotions, the 'f' word helps in emphasizing feelings! ^^ Well, okay, I do not use it with my bosses and clients and all but I tend to use it with my colleagues when we talk on a normal basis. So I do curse at work. Probably not for everyone around me to hear.

I curse a LOT when I am driving! I absolutely cannot stand idiotic drivers or drivers who drive too slow... I could never react fast enough to honk at them so I always end up cursing without thinking and hoping that my voice can penetrate through the walls for them to hear my frustration! LOL!

I do think it isn't good to curse in front of kids but I know that kids will most likely learn to curse really soon anyways with them having facebook accounts and all. Seeing the amount of foul language online makes me think twice if I would allow my kid to go online >.< But I sometimes forget if I have kids around me and curse out loud then I would be like, 'aww... crud'
