I have quite a few grammar nazi friends who constantly need to correct me. I like spelling correctly but I don't look down on someone who doesn't and I don't look down on people who use chat speak. Though chat speak is hard to understand sometimes I have fun attempting to read it and understand. It's like trying to speak with someone of another language!

So are grammar nazi at all? Are there and grammar things the make you tick?

As long as someone has decent spelling and stays away from chatspeak, I'm fine. I just find chatspeak to be too juvenile and there's no excuse in my mind for using it when you have a keyboard in front of you. I understand its uses in text messaging, especially when you don't want to go over a certain character limit but on the internet? Come on, people.

I'm a grammar dunce, the most I know how to use is a comma and apostrophes, I don't have any recollection of being taught about anything else at school, but grammar nazis make me want to punch them. The ones who feel the need to publicly point out other people's mistakes, at least. That's just so damn rude and obnoxious

Also, it's usually the final fallback of internet trolls who are losing an arguement...

"yeah!!! well!! you said your instead of you're, retard!" etc...

We had someone on here who went around correcting other people's posts. She even had a pic of a red pen in her signature >_> Unsuprisingly she didn't stick around for very long, because hey guess what...no-one liked her!

I generally try to spell things like they're supposed to be spelled, but I some times get lazy with punctuation.
I have a couple of friends though, that grammar nazis. Or spelling spetznaz, which ever works for you.

There are always those factualists who point out errors to try to elevate themselves by pointing out other people's errors. English is a language made from several other languages and those different rules apply. It is not an easy language to master, and I often find what is grammatically correct isn't truthfully correct. That's not what I mean at all -- sometimes the errors express what you feel more accurately than what the sequence of words that follow the "rule" does...

Alex: That's how I've felt about it too. English is a huge ripoff of other languages, which isn't a bad thing. XD

Jelly: How interesting! I know a few people like that else where, they are also the least liked people there O_O Right next to spammers.

I'm not a grammar "nazi", I'm a grammar friendly person... Same thing, different name, more kind. I feel the urge to correct people when I find something wrong, but I usually fight that urge, often because I can tell it was a typo, or a key that was accidentally hit, not a mistake. I dislike leet speak a lot, though. That and "u" instead of "you" and all that junk. Typing an extra couple of letters is not going to hurt anyone, it's not like you're wasting your time (classic counter-argument "I don't want to spend all my time typing it out!"). If you think it's time-wasting, turn off the computer and write a letter instead.

But I do that because I'm from a non-english speaking country, and even though my english is nearly-perfect (I'm so modest), I make mistakes too, and I appreciate it a lot when people take the time to tell me what I wrote wrong and what the appropriate way to write that word is. Except if you're being a bitch about it.

Long story cut short I try to do to others as I wish they do to me.

Also grammar "nazi". Gosh that expression pisses me off so bad. Godwin's law. -.-

Ah now, I know a lot of Norwegian people, and I'll correct them when they get a word wrong, but I'm not being a Nazi there, I'm helping them, particularly when it's words that sound the same but have different meanings. They'll often ask me which version is right and what means what.

It amuses me no end on here when people get all ," Um, I think you made a mistake there with the spelling of [insert word here] when I've just written it in English (as I am English) and not "American".

When it comes to helping foreigners or people you can tell made a mistake, that's perfectly okay. I had a friend who posted on another site and was kicked out of a thread because she didn't capitalize her words =__= THAT is nazi.

I think grammar doesn't really matter to me that much, so long as I can understand someone. After all, typing like this is conversational, not an essay (and I will admit, even being an English undergraduate, my conversational grammar leaves much to be desired). Just so long as the mistake isn't outrageous, or compromises meaning, it's perfectly okay.

Word tells me that my sentences are ungrammatical all the time, go away with your green zigzaggy line! :illgetu: xD But that's just how I string words together. They're still sentences, with capitals where they should be and fairly accurate punctuation. I despise chatspeak. My sister uses it when she sends me texts and if I talk to her on MSN, and it makes me cringe, but I don't chastise her about it.

One of the awesome sneaky things about Mene is how our gold earning discourages people from using chatspeak 8)

I actually saw news about kids using chat speak in their homework assignments. NOW THAT is going a little far. XD I feel bad for the teachers trying to read those essays. D:

I've heard about this kind of stuff for several years, and how the kids pitch fits when they're automatically failed. They need to get their heads out of their butts, they really do.

My stepdad teaches remedial English, so I know how annoying being corrected can be.

That said tho, I tend to prefer RPs and such with people who can write the language with some degree of intelligence.

I'm certainly not perfect. I like some short cuts (note I wrote 'tho' when I could have written 'though'- I know the difference, I just don't always see the point in making everything exactly right), and I've been guilty many times of writing in colloquials, you know, how one sounds when they say a thing instead of how it would actually be spelled (ex. Cookies? Ima get me some o' those!)

I also sometimes do the no caps thing because I like the way it looks in a particular situation (I've even been guilty of aLtErNaTiNg CaPs, which takes time and effort! I find it aesthetically pleasing, but I know it annoys the hell out of some people, and to be frank, sometimes annoying some of those people adds to the fun of it), and I don't like l33t or text but I do like the bad grammar that is LOLcat-talk.

But I do prefer people who can write well. I can and should write better more often.

I don't like the term "grammar Nazi" I find it kindof offensive--as someone with a lot of Jewish family, I think it downplays and makes a joke of the Nazi belief system and the things they'd done. But, I try not to take it seriously or get upset about it, because I don't think people really mean it that way, and it's just an example of thoughtlessness, not malice.

As for Grammar Nuts (my preferred terminology)...I would prefer not to deal with them. My grammar isn't perfect, but I like to goof off sometimes, or shit, just be lazy and stop typing in proper English for a bit.
Oh fucking no, I didn't capitalize my 'i'? Or I misused "it's"? Go suck a dick and bother someone else, thanks. My typing isn't that hard to read, and if it is, it wasn't directed at you.

I have a few nitpicks, I tend to like decent spelling and I really hate chat speak, I don't use it and I don't really like reading it. Other than that I don't really have much to bother with. I never correct anyone else grammar though I just sort of cringe and let it go.

As long as it's not too bad then I don't mind. I know my grammar isn't great so I don't expect others to have perfect grammar and spelling. I do hate chat speak when it's used in excess. Things like Twilight annoy the heck out of me because there are so many errors to the point where it's just annoying.

I do correct people at times, but I'm not necessarily that obsessed or extremely strict about it. It does at times make me laugh when the basic grammar rules are broken. :P

I know I'm not perfect all the time (and unless I'm doing something serious, I do not try to be), but there are some things that make me RAGE when I see them. Chat speak is not one of those things because it is intentional (I never understood why people get worked up over INTENTIONAL imperfections) and I can excuse people who have not been speaking English for very long or have some sort of disability. However, I feel that if you've been speaking/writing English normally for your entire life and are obviously not trying to type a certain way for fun, there are certain things that you have no excuse for not knowing.
That said, I usually don't bother correcting people just because of how many whiny little... somethings I come across who attack anyone who tries to do so, no matter how friendly. I don't see why one should be so opposed to help, but whatever. ...That, and there are usually so damn many mistakes that it wouldn't be worth all the effort.

Unless someone is writing a book or an essay for school, I really don't care how someone spells or uses correct grammer. As long as I can understand you and don't have to try to understand, I don't care if you use five commas in a sentence or whatever.

I cringe when people spell things really poorly or mix up their similar-sounding words... but I never point it out, it's just rude and unnecessary. As long as you understand what they're trying to say, no need to be a dick about it! The only time I'd ever say something about their grammar or spelling is when they mangled their sentence so badly that I just couldn't understand what they were trying to say. and, okay, one time I made fun of my cousin for typing "retarted" just because of the irony, but it was in jest.

I'm not perfect, I have no room to criticize anyone. Spellcheck has fixed most of my issues, but I'm still kind of poor with punctuation. Too many commas! I'm also guilty of sentence fragments, as you can see. I need to master the semicolon, too... I try, but it's slippery for me and I can never tell if I'm using it right. I'd look dumber by using it incorrectly than I would by not using it at all, anyway.

I can understand your feelings on that, I call it that because that's all I have ever heard it called honestly. in my years on the web it was a very popular term to call people who go crazy on people for a minor misspelling.

See, this is what I don't understand. What is rude about simply pointing out a mistake and telling that person how to fix it? It's not as though in order to correct someone, you must go: "HEY YOU STUPID RETARD, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG LOLOL" or anything. It's only being helpful and I feel people should appreciate something like that, rather than going around not even realizing that they're spelling something incorrectly and often making themselves look silly.

I try to type correctly as I possibly can. But, as far as the chat speak goes. I don't really mind it. Just as long as I can understand what the person is trying to say. But there have been some occasions in where I just had to stop reading a certain comment or an article because the person who typed it constantly misspells words(On purpose that is.) to the point that it starts to get on my nerves and I just can't read anymore
