That sounds interesting! Do you have pictures of your finished works?

Elluh 03-30-2011 12:25 AM

Ahh, no cause my cannon broke. :( But once I get it fixed, I'll be sure to post in my album.

jellysundae 03-30-2011 12:51 AM

Cherry, I started shopping on Ebay because I'm unemployed. xD

There's nothing quite so sucky as losing weight, but having no job, so no money to buy any clothes that fit you  So being able to buy 10 items for what I'd have spent on just one on the highstreet...oh yeah!

Especially as the vast majority of what I've bought is from my favourite companies who I've been a customer of for years, but only ever bought stuff from in the sales, because even when I was working their stuff was a bit out of my price range, and now I've been able to snap stuff up at bargain basement prices :D

I wish I'd thought of Ebay long ago to be honest. If I'm ever brave enough I have a lot of stuff I can sell too, things I've never worn or just don't like now/don't fit now. I'd not have any expectancy of getting more than a couple of pound for each thing, but that's more than I'd get if I took it all to a charity shop

Cherry Who? 03-30-2011 01:47 AM

I know what you mean! Happened to me a few years ago. After that I built up a nice new wardrobe, then promptly got very sick and tired of the teen bright colors thing, and now I'm back at square one. I just registered on ebay, though, and am finding some nice stuff from some brands I like. :) Having trouble setting a size profile, though... The pants measurements they want don't make any sense. Most pants sit below your belly button, but they don't even go past 33 inches... So I'm guessing they mean your natural waist, but most pants don't sit there. Not confusing at all. :gonk:

As for getting money for your old clothes, go for it! If selling on eBay makes you nervous or is more effort than you currently want to put forth, see if there are any consignment shops in the area. As opposed to charity shops, which only take donations, there are lots of stores which will buy clothes from you and then sell them at a higher price. I made $11 from taking some clothes and books to Plato's Closet recently. :) Best of all, very little effort is required! \o/

jellysundae 03-30-2011 02:06 AM

Yeah, it's the measurement of the waistband, so you need to read the description and see if they've mentioned how high the rise is. People in general don't give enough measurements for trousers. I want a 33 inside leg so them just saying the trousers are a long inside leg in no use to me, because long is usually 32.

You got me looking now, when I'm supposed to be getting Admin's Pick done (Cherry's fault that it's late!) Just spotted a pretty blouse that I like, it has daisies on it =3, but It's gonna end while I'm sleeping, oh well ><

Liztress 03-30-2011 02:22 AM

That is a pretty blouse.

I'm all for shopping at Goodwill, thrift shops, yard sales, eBay, and flea markets. I haven't been to any in over a year though. :( I think the best deals I have gotten was a very pretty mirror that hangs on my wall from the Salvation Army store. It cost like $4. Also, my most prized deal from Goodwill is the $4 Hello Kitty Plush that retailed for almost $25 on the Build-A-Bear Workshop website. I see nothing wrong with getting used clothes (not undergarments though... That is just weird!) or even shoes.

Cherry Who? 03-30-2011 02:38 AM

Liztress - I don't have much problem with used shoes either, but I can rarely find cute ones at goodwill. I've actually found more nice pairs at the tiny church shop near me. I got a nice black pair of heels (thick heel, too, so I'm not all wobbly in it!) with some little silver metal details near the toe. A nice basic that was missing from my wardrobe. Also found a pair of spectator-style heels there! The heel is thin so I'm very wobbly in them, but I've been wanting some shoes like forever, and at a buck and in my size, how could I possibly pass them up?

Next time you need to go clothes shopping, you should hit a thrift store! :) It's so fun!

Jelly - I gave up so very long ago on finding pants that are the right length for me... Not unless I shop in petites (or just so happen to find a brand that offers sizes in "short") can I get ones that won't scrape the floor. And for some reason, petite clothing always assumes you're curvy and fits as such... Nope, just short. :gonk:

Wahaha, my evil plan is going according to... plan! I found a cute top too, but it's too small for me. And I'm not having much luck finding many things in a reasonable price range. :( I think a lot of people are jacking up the "shipping" price so they can list the shirts for 99 cents. Sorry, seller, shipping a shirt inside the US will NEVER cost $8! Got a few cute things on my watchlist though. This is pretty darn cute. :) (yes, I want to look like a couch, I know)

Ooh, I should see if they have any brass animals... I collect those.

jellysundae 03-30-2011 03:11 AM

Oh, I'd not thought to look at H&M stuff, they have some nice things.

Cherry, and I apologise for this RIGHT NOW, but...try Etsy for brass bits and bobs. Just don't blame me if you never surface again, Etsy is so full of lovely things :gonk: I got a little enamelled brass trinket pot from there, and I love it to death!

----------

Oh! and, I got these shoes on Ebay, brand new, still smelling of rubber from the soles. They cost me £2.15 and a couple of pound postage, for quite possibly the cutest pair of shoes that ever existed xD

Cherry Who? 03-30-2011 04:00 AM

Those shoes are darling!

Oh, yes, Etsy is a time- and money-sucker. A few months ago I picked up this little owl plaque-thingy, and this vintage photo. I hadn't thought to check them for brass things, though! Okay, here goes the rest of my night!

I ought to see if I can find a tiny gnome for my terrarium too...

jellysundae 03-30-2011 04:22 AM

I'm sure you'd find a tiny gnome, because Etsy is full of people selling tiny terraniums

Cherry Who? 03-30-2011 04:55 AM

Yeah, I don't understand that... just how do you ship a terrarium? It'll get all flipped in shipping and will come to you a jar of messy dirt with a dead, half-buried plant.

All their terrarium supplies are kind of expensive, though, since terrariums are so "in" right now. Curse people for wanting to bring nature indoors!

Well, so far I've made an eBay account and found some cute shirts I'd like to bid on, found a nearby flea market I had no clue existed, and took a better look at some of the wonderful treasures I've found and felt quite grateful for having them. So thanks, thread and the denizens of!

jellysundae 03-30-2011 05:19 AM

Awesome stuff! :D Hope you find some amazing bargains on Ebay that make you very happy :boogie:

Zombierella 03-30-2011 08:02 AM

I don't shop in thrift stores or flea markets, but I do loooove online shopping!

Aedmourne 03-30-2011 09:36 PM

Sometimes I find myself wondering why so many people are so obssessed with buying other people's crap...there is a reason they're getting rid of it after all...it tends to be junk...on rare occassions people specifically buy new things and donate them, but for the most part it is crap...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those rich snobs who thinks you have to buy idiotically expensive designer stuff...I just don't think its entirely neccessary to buy "crap"...I can understand if that's the best you can afford, my confusion is the people who purposely go to Thrift Stores and what not, even when they can easily afford things from normal stores...

Cherry Who? 03-30-2011 11:08 PM

Everyone has different tastes, Aedmourne. :) As the saying goes, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." Thrift stores are loaded with things I wouldn't like and that might even fit most people's definition of "junk," but I've also found tons of things that I really and truly love.

People buy a lot of things. A lot of things. More things than we'll ever have a use for. Some people are minimalist and only get things they really need and use them right up until they just can't be used anymore, but a lot of people get tired of things long before then. I regularly find shirts in my closet that I loved when I got them, but they're just not my style anymore and I'd never wear them. But they're the exact same as they were when I bought them brand new, and someone else will probably want it. So, no, not everything in thrift stores is there because no one would want it, it's there because one person didn't want it anymore (but they did at one time, remember), and we certainly all don't have the same tastes. :) I think you might be drawing some exaggerated conclusions.

crunky 04-01-2011 04:14 PM

I love buying on the cheap. Especially in today's economy it's practically a must now! I used to work at a restaurant for minimum wage when I was younger (back before the economy when in the crapper for the United States) and so I only had a uniform of two pairs of black pants and couple of white collar shirts. Well then I get a better paying job working at a bank so I had to vamp up my clothing apparel to fit the appropriate business look but I had no money. So I learned to shop at Goodwill and Salvation Army and any decent consignment place I could find. I found really nice things for cheap. I rarely ever bought anything new. Now I do buy new clothes but only if I have a coupon. It's like apocalyptic for me to pay full price for anything I buy. xD It really doesn't make much sense to me to pay more when you don't have to. =P I do have to say that I mostly avoid the garage sales only because, at that point, people are usually selling stuff that they couldn't donate to the Salvation Army. xD That is not always the case but it's not really worth my time and gas to check out random stuff when I know I can go to the local thrift store and they will always have something in my size. *nods*

Cherry Who? 04-01-2011 09:01 PM

Mm, sometimes, but sometimes garage sales come before the donating. Afterall, most people would want to see if they can get money out of something before giving it away for free! But yes, sometimes garage sales are full of just absolute junk, and you begin to wonder how nuts they are to think someone would actually pay for some of that crap. "Oh, cool, a vacuum, I could use a new one!" "That doesn't work, it broke ten years ago." "The price tag says ten dollars..." "Yep."

I hate paying full price too. The only time I do is if the item is something I'll be getting a lot of use out of and isn't something I can find at thrift stores, normally. And of course, the full price has to be pretty low to start with. Like, for example I had been having a ton of trouble finding really nice, fitted basic Tshirts in good cuts at Thrift Stores. They'd all be in ugly colors, boxy shapes, with high necks, etc. So for that, I bought a really nice, well fitted V-neck at H&M for about $6 in a nice color, and another at Forever21 for $3. And really, any shirt I buy at goodwill is usually $3 anyway, so... score! But anyway, back to my original point, I only buy full price if it's relatively cheap and something I just can never seem to find used. I just don't see a need to buy brand new stuff when there's so much stuff already floating around that needs a home (and is cheap!).

HIM_ROCK 04-01-2011 09:28 PM

HIM's seen some weird things on the side of roads for sale including, a mobility scooter, a hurse a new one at that, a wheelchair, a vaccume cleaner and a pair of boots.

Cherry Who? 04-01-2011 10:05 PM

Well, as long as they're functional still, I'm sure someone can use one, but... a hearse? :gonk: I can't help but think that people who drive hearses that aren't transporting dead bodies are being a bit disrespectful.

HIM_ROCK 04-02-2011 05:57 PM

But it means people will always let you out at junctions

Cherry Who? 04-02-2011 10:40 PM

I suppose so... I guess you also wouldn't get anyone tailgating or cutting you off, either. Hmm, maybe I should rethink my position on this...

AlbaRosaria 04-02-2011 11:06 PM

Most everything I own with few exceptions. :3 I love Good Will, Ebay, yard sales... I once picked up a brand new with tags shirt from a yard sale for $1.50, and at another yard sale... A rare book worth $200 for 20 bucks. The lady that sold me the book was actually a retired antiques dealer and said straight out that the only reason she was selling it so cheap is because she thought I'd appreciate it and take care of it. :3 Lucked out. It has all the original Victorian platelets in it from 1887.

I also picked up a raw opal from a church yard sale that is worth well over a thousand after looking it up and getting appraised. Mom claimed it when we got home. XD She still wears it around. OH! And then there was that marble bowl thing with brass medallions on top for three dollars.

How I love yard sales... :D

A hearse to ride around in? Epic. Pure awesomeness in a can. How much were they asking? XD

HIM_ROCK 04-03-2011 11:50 AM

They didn't have a price on it so I'm guessing it was alot.

Been to a car boot this morning and I can safely say some of the stuff they've got there is absolute crap, you wouldn't even give it to a chairty shop and if you did it'd go in the bin because no one wants it. There's a whole load of soft toys no one wants and a mass of GOLF CLUBS some were even brand new.

Cherry Who? 04-04-2011 02:23 AM

I'm not entirely sure what a car boot is, sorry.

AlbaRosaria - Wow, awesome deals!

JapaneseCherryBlossom 04-04-2011 04:45 AM

OH Cherry you are my twin! People always say they love my clothes and have no idea that most are under 10 dollars. I go straight to the clearance racks. Of course, I've learned that trying clothes on is usually important because some things do not look right on.
I have never found anything bad when searching for my own buys......except I worked for an online used book company before, and we used to sell books with water damage. Some of the ones we "tried" not to sell had MOLD. One coworker even found a used condom in one. EWWW.

Anyways, I like to donate clothes that don't fit or use them for scraps/crafts.
And LISTIA is AWESOME. And so is PLATO's CLOSET. Hey, you live in Missouri like me. How neat.
