Osama Bin Laden is dead

Osama has been defeated. Where were you when you heard the news? How did you find out?

I found out through facebook. Which makes me think of the power of the internet.

I hope this brings our military out of some areas of the middle east. I hope it brings my cousin home. I hope it brings hundreds of people back to the families they have left to help enforce our safety.

While I am glad to hear his threat is gone, I wonder if this is just like one head of a hydra, and another will just appear to take his place. What are your thoughts?

SABBACI 05-02-2011 03:51 AM

I was on mene. In the same room as I was the televesion to CNN with Obama spewing bullocks.

I don't think it will change much. He probably had somebody in the pits of hell, drinking martinis with Dick Cheney and waiting wor the occasion.

As you can see, I am rather cynical about politics.

Captain Howdy 05-02-2011 03:57 AM

Just read it right now after hopping over to AOL news, and then skipping over to yahoo. Bit of a surprise. Apparently the military has been sitting on this for a week now while they were doing some DNA tests to see if it was really him.

And I agree with your hydra statement, Daria. I really have no idea how al qaeda functions, but it seems difficult to think that that the group will just simply fall apart now without their leader. It's assuredly a huge blow to them, though.

I was ready to watch the new Simpsons (which never came on D8) and some douchebag politician (I'm sorry, but everyone on Fox is a laughingstock and I think we all know it) came on and began to explain while saying "uh" every other word and speaking with a huge smile on his face. I seriously though it was a joke, but that's mostly because I think Fox is a joke.

So after listening for about half an hour and no official word from the white house yet, I watched some robot chicken and flipped back to CBS in time to catch Obama give the official statement: "Justice has been done."

What I'm interested in is Pakistan's involvement... for the last decade, they've been saying "We SWEAR we'll tell America if we hear anything about Bin Laden!". We all sort of knew that was the only place he could have gone (having searched everywhere else), but now that it's PROVEN that they must have known he was in the country, I'm interested to see how the official reaction will go over. Pakistan's not looking so hot right now.

BurningDread 05-02-2011 04:22 AM

I heard from my boyfriend's step-dad. And then watched the press conference.

My thoughts on this is kind of indifferent. I'm glad they got him but I got a feeling that the next few months might have us seeing some attacks. :(

Anaxilea 05-02-2011 04:33 AM

I sort of feel the same way... I'm nervous that all reports say that the entire middle east is very, very quiet... usually by now, they say AQ should have used it as a political propaganda of sorts, encouraging people who support them to rise up and inspire morale.

Thought one is maybe they don't know what to do without Bin Laden. Thought two, the scarier, is that they're planning something big.

secretdae007 05-02-2011 04:35 AM

From the history buff roommate who was watching the news in the living room. It was quite exciting actually.

ElysiumFate 05-02-2011 05:16 AM

I found about it on Mene, actually. :D

I also agree with people about the idea that we might be seeing some attacks here now. Even Obama had a look on his face that was like, "Oh, god. We've killed him, yes, but how can I tell the people I think we've opened a can of shit?"

carzeemumbear 05-02-2011 05:33 AM

I just got home and on the news there are hundreds of happy New Yorkers waving flags and singing at the camera. A bit like how the other side react when they've just had a victory. I think the whole thing is just attack and counter attack. If revenge could bring the loved ones back it would be OK but it doesn't work that way.
Sad :(
I'd love to see it all just stop ... world peace.

DariaMorgendorfer 05-02-2011 05:36 AM

I'm with you carzeemumbear. Peace would be glorious.

Anaxilea 05-02-2011 05:48 AM

I think everyone is. If only the world worked that way.

I won't celebrate a human life being taken - I was raised Buddhist - but I will celebrate the closure that comes to hundreds of families of soldiers who were killed, and the families of those who lost someone they loved in the Twin Tower attacks.

Today should be a day where America stands united and sees hope for the future, whatever may happen from this point forward.

Larxene 05-02-2011 07:17 AM

Oddly enough, they announced it on the Weather Channel, which I happened to be watching. The woman came on and said, "we just received some news" and then proceeds to say he was dead. So I switched to CNN.

alonegirl-rocks-the-world 05-02-2011 07:46 AM

I was just hanging out, watching some YouTube videos when my friend's mom came in and just told us as soon as the first reports came in. That was about 5 hours ago and we've been switching between FOX on TV and CNN online ever since.

The initial flood of Facebook posts also contained a lot of links as well.

Kraven 05-02-2011 09:44 AM

I was channel surfing and I saw the headline on the news. I was shocked. I was instantly taken back ten years ago to when I saw that second airplane hit world trade center. I heard they buried him at sea. I bet even the sharks won't touch him.

The_Crow 05-02-2011 10:11 AM

Oddly enough I found out through a friend's post on facebook. That's also how I found out about the own earthquake that hit my building a few seconds after it did (I thought somebody was playing with explosives, so sue me).

I do share your hopes, Daria, in that it will let troops come home... but realistically I fear they'll just find another scapegoat... I worry about the troops, which are generally 'youth' and people in my age bracket over there.

Bartuc 05-02-2011 10:21 AM

FUCK YEAH THAT PRICK IS DEAD!! (Report me Osama. Report me.)

However, for an organization such as the Taliban to crumble. It would require a mass slaughter operation to take out every leadership head figure that organization has. As one falls, another rises up to replace him. Amongst all the other organizations with the same standards, morales and ethics as the Taliban. Anyone who believes there is one person who runs the show on an organization like that, is naive and only fooling themselves. Unfortunately the 'War on Terrorism' will never be won as long as there is still hate and the urge to kill upon that hate.

HIM_ROCK 05-02-2011 10:37 AM

I heard it from another user on here first now on the news.

As for the taliban it's going to keep going as long as there's someone else to take over and as long as they have money they have power. It's the same with drug smuggling rings you take out one leader and there's always someone waiting in the wings to take over.

Dillo 05-02-2011 11:21 AM

What Bartuc said.xD

NeuzaKC 05-02-2011 11:37 AM

I heard (actually, read) about it on one of my watcher's dA journal. Yay for deviantART and American watchers! *Looks at Projectwolfie:* Since it doesn't affect me, I'm like eh. I mean, it's awesome, but solely for the satisfaction that at some point most people will finally stop bawwing about the WTC thing. It's getting annoying, no offense.

Dottie Mae Evans 05-02-2011 11:55 AM

I just found out this morning when I woke up. My aunt told me Bin laden was killed, and I didn't believe it. I asked again and it was true. Then I watched the news and realized this is real. :o

Anyways, hopefully no one new comes into the picture. :-/ For now, we can kind of relax but not quite. :S

Kaizy-Kat 05-02-2011 12:32 PM

I found out last night when my dad came in to tell me that there was going to be a press-confrence. My parents only stayed up until 10:45 ET when the reporters first came on, but I couldn't sleep until I heard Obama give his address.

I spent the time between level grinding my Rufflet in Pokemon. XDD

Arkkath 05-02-2011 01:57 PM

I was levelling an assassination-specced undead rogue in Blackfathom Deeps. We had just beat down Gamooh'rah, the great turtle, when one of my guildies said something, so I put on the news.

I'm hoping our soldiers get sent home too. I've got a buddy over there at the moment.

This doesn't mean we can just for get about this whole issue though. While his death may have been a blown to their morale, someone else is likely to take charge and attempt a counter attack at some point, so we're going to have to stay on guard. I'd love to see this whole issue done and over with, but that's just me being an optimist prime. I know it's actually not that easy.

Mystic 05-02-2011 02:50 PM

I read it when I went to check my e-mail.

The war's not just going to end because Osama's dead. It's pretty much what Bartuc said. Just because one of their leaders is dead doesn't mean someone else isn't going to step into power. I also believe that killing isn't the answer since it just leads to more violence. Don't get me wrong, someone like that doesn't deserve anything good to happen to them but an eye for an eye kind of thing doesn't always work. I would be very surprised if a counter attack does not happen.

Yay, I feel special! :O

Anywho, for once there's actually something I can be proud for in my country. The original intention for us going over there has finally been completed. However, in the very Bush-like words that Obama said in his speech the war with terror and Al Queda isn't quite over yet. We're getting there though.

I sure feel sorry for the other countries listening about this though. xD

Miffed 05-02-2011 05:39 PM

I was just sitting at home, being lazy, when my sister and I saw on MSN news there was "breaking news from Obama" and the subject was unknown.
Funny thing is, we actually got really frightened that it was something terrible that he was announcing. xD So we quickly turned on CNN, and the news reporters had gotten information that Osama bin Laden was dead, maybe an hour before Obama actually made his speech.

Personally, I was shocked, and happy.
But, I can't lie...I am worried what might happen in the near future, revenge wise. o_o
