When I got to looking through my oldest boy's yearbook today, I got to wondering. For those still in school and ones who have been out of school as long as I have (next year marks 10 whole years since I graduated), do/did you look forward to getting your yearbook? Do you buy them and if so, do you still have them?
Other questions:
1. Do you still look through them time to time?
2. If you don't buy or haven't bought one, how come?
3. Am I the only one who groans when looking back at how dated my hairstyle and/or clothing choices were back then?
4. How expensive were they? I'm actually curious as to how much they cost nowadays.
5. How popular were you with the camera? In other words, were there a lot of pictures of you in the book?
My parents did make a point to get me at least the first year of high school and last year. I know that my senior one was like $45 without a name plate on the cover. I don't have them here and I'm fairly sure they were ruined in the house fire that happened after I had moved from the house I grew up in. :( Also, I also groaned with some of the "notes" I'd write about any guys I thought were cute. Seems like my taste was bad when I was younger. And I actually tried to make sure not to get into too many pictures. I think yearbooks are a nice way to chronicle your school years.
And sorry if there's a thread like this already. I didn't see one so thought it was safe to go.

I not only have all four of my high school yearbooks, I was yearbook editor in my senior year -- doing pages, taking pictures, etc. etc.
Funny thing, I went to my high school's 30th anniversary where all the alum were invited -- the slide show and the halls were all decorated with old yearbook pictures, many of which I snapped during my time in yearbook. It was a blast and it made me happy that my work back then still had a use years later.
To answer your other questions:
1. Once in a while if I come across them. I used to work as a journalist, and many times I would track down other people's yearbooks when I was researching about people. Great way to see the beginnings of certain people. You learn a lot more than most people realize.
2. Always bought one -- I had school spirit.
3. No groaning -- I think it's cute!
4. $20 dollars -- I didn't think a book that size was expensive.
5. Oh, I made sure I was in the yearbook -- I was on the committee, after all. Not as if I graced every page and I always tried to get as many people in the yearbook as I could -- I hated when people would hide from the camera, and then when the book came out, whined that they weren't in it enough. Like, duh, how do you think you get in a yearbook unless you pose for the camera? The committee was so flexible -- we were always picture hungry -- we'd take pictures people outside yearbook gave us -- hardly snobs, but what can you do?
Almost forgot -- when I went to the school's 30th -- I brought my last yearbook with me and had people autograph it -- old classmates, teachers -- that was awesome...

I'm still in my last year of highschool, and no - I don't get the yearbook. Because I'm never in it. Seriously. They take pictures of all the form classes.. and leave mine out. There isn't a single photo of me in my year 10 (9th grade) yearbook. But I might get this year's. I'm at a school with way higher school spirit levels, so stuff is actually exciting. Also - it's my last chance to get one.

CrazySailorMoonFan, that helps out. ^_^ And $18 isn't bad for a yearbook.
That's so cool, Alexandrakitty. I wanted to be a part of the yearbook committee in high school but transportation was an issue. :(
Not even the usual photo that they take on picture day? That's odd. :(

Ah. I was on the Yearbook staff as well, so I have many of the same experiences Alexandria did. I'll not be typing it all out again, though. Lol. I was an Editor, but not the Editor in Chief. Still, I was pretty high up in the ranks by the end.
Anyway, our yearbook cost (you're gonna faint) $75 when I was still going. I presume it's more expensive now. Our art department (which ran the yearbook) had and has no funding, so that's the only way we could afford to put out yearbooks. In fact, the school attempted to get rid of yearbook completely last year (my senior year), but we fought and somehow managed to keep it.

Our meetings were on everyday at noon -- I was in school all day, anyway; so it wasn't a problem. It was a really fun hangout back then -- very social, and a small, but dedicated group, but only years later when I looked at other yearbook committees did I realize it was bigger than average -- I've seen committees that had maybe four students put out an entire book -- and wow, kudos to them!

An art department -- wow, I wish we had that, that's pretty neat. I also wished we had student art and poetry -- we didn't and one year I put together a literary and art journal on my own to showcase both.
Seventy-five bucks for a book? That is expensive -- did you have a lot of color pages? That really drives the price up.
What's really interesting was when I was in yearbook, we had to do all of the pages manually -- we did not use a computer -- we had to crop pictures by hand and all the layouts were also done that way. I thought it was a sign of the times, but then when I talked to people who were in yearbook in other schools at the same time I was, they were doing it all with computer layouts -- that would take one quarter of the time -- today it would be completely different.
And good for you guys for keeping the yearbook going -- I know couple of years after I graduated from high school, there was one year that didn't have an editor; so there wasn't a yearbook. When I went to my school's anniversary, quite a few people were sorry they didn't get to have one for their graduating year -- but yearbooks are like fine wines -- they become more cherished with time...

I have to order mine for High school here soon. Mine is going to cost me 40 dollars! Thats a lot of money, considering how much you have to pay for prom and crap.

If you thought $75 dollars was bad, mine was $115 for those who decided to pre-pay (pay early) and $125 for those who paid last minute. $115-125 for 110 completely colored pages. (Prices are from a few years ago.)
I was lucky enough to be on the yearbook committee on the graphics team (We had graphics, writers, and collectors.).
We were lucky though and had a lot of creative minded students who work amazingly at photoshop to design the superlative pages. It was incredible.
While I do think that using computer layouts save us a lot of time, cutting out photos by hand made the collages way better because you could use unconventional forms/shapes that are not available through the computer. You had a lot more freedom to create unique collage layouts versus using the pre-made ones that companies use to create yearbooks.

I graduated four years ago and I rarely if ever look at them anymore. School sucked for me. Being fat means I got to be bullied my entire time there.
1. Nope
2. I don't buy the college ones because they're now magazines and suck.
3. I don't groan at the out-datedness....I groan at how much I looked like a guy
4. Like....50 dollars or more
5. The fewer the pictures the better. Though I was voted most artistic or something to that extent.

We did that -- so we could fit more pictures into the yearbook and we would have pictures that turned out half good -- maybe the lighting was great for one person, but not for the other or someone made a face or blinked -- so collage was the way to go. I loved them...

All colored pages -- that's sounds about right -- we may have had four colored pages and the rest were black and white -- that was one of the big gripes we heard about the yearbook -- people wanted colored pages, but were not willing to pay more for a book. I think black and white is more flattering, so it didn't make a whole lot of difference to me...

The year books at my school are 80 dollars a pop.
If you want your club/ or your own page it's 150.
I think it's a scam, I mean don't get me wrong..it's good for memories and such.
But most of the pictures in the year book are of the yearbook committee.
They're in every shot! Not just once, or three times but in almost everything!
Bunch of camera whores, and it's a fine arts school..there's one small page dedicated to theater.
Half a page dedicated to visual arts..but there's around 6 pages for band.
I dunno, maybe if the year book is better next year [my senior year] I'll buy it.
Heck, I'll even put some effort into taking the actual picture c:

That's a new one to me -- if people wanted to be included when I was in the book, all they had to do was ask and we'd fit them in our limited space. That sounds like a vanity publisher if you ask me...

I'm not sure if I have to pay for my Yearbooks, since they're delivered to our pastoral class and we don't pay.
It's probably included in our school fee somewhere, though. xD

I have yearbooks for every year so far since kindergarten. I'm still in high school, but I'm planning on buying them for the next few years as well.
I actually just went through some of the really old ones a few weeks ago... mostly because I wanted to amuse myself by refreshing my memory on what my classmates were like when we were about ten years old. Although, it turned out to be mildly depressing, to realize that such innocent little kids turned into the people that I pretty much can't stand anymore. xD
I don't think I've ever actually had a decent yearbook picture, to be honest... It's like my hair makes a conscious effort on its own to rebel against me as soon as it realizes picture day is coming up. Then, of course, back when we had spring pictures as well, mine would always turn out wonderfully... which was totally pointless, since they don't put those in the yearbook.
I don't know how expensive they are, really. I kinda just let my parents pay for that and don't really think about it. It seems like it might be somewhere around $30.00 or so, though.
I try to avoid being in the yearbook as much as possible. Of course, I'm always basically forced to be in all the club pictures for things that I'm in, but other than that, whenever I see someone coming down the hallway with a camera, I try to locate a convenient wall to duck behind...
