I think that you made it very clear that you were not placing any blame on the victim. So, I don't understand why a few people chose to simply overlook that.
It's kinda sad that you can't post something without it being picked apart and having things taken out of context. :(

This is the general discussion forum. I am discussing a general topic. I didn't overlook anything. I thought I'd formulate a discussion.

While she does seem to lack some intelligence for riding on a bicycle that late at night, you might want to consider changing the title of this forum, seeing as "Dumber" not an actual word. I just find it ironic and am in no way trying to make you seem unintelligent. Just letting you know the irony that I saw.

Dumber is a word dude. Otherwise it would be "more dumb" and according to the rules of the English "More dumb" doesn't work.

I don't mind it at all, Presley. Thank you for pointing it out.
Technically the spelling is correct, and dumber is a word, but it's literal definition is for someone who is somewhat deaf (if I'm not mistaken); it's incorrect nonetheless. It just follows a social trend of language rather than a formal correctness.
It's not that she was riding a bicycle at night, but that she was riding it through the woods alone at night in a bad part of town.

Well alright, if we're being that literal, dumb means unable to speak, but in modern terms it means of lower intelligence.

The person who it was directed to is fine with the comment.
There's no reason to dwell on it more. It was also originally a joke, just so you know. ;P
Anyways, to remain on topic, people are tho thilly. I think that even if people took all the precautions in the world, though, things like this would still happen. There are examples of that every day, as I'm sure people have already said.

Oh I totally agree. Just today there was this guy who was punching people in the face for no reason at all. He tried to steal a little girl's bike, and when she wouldn't give it to him, he punched her. She's in the hospital now. All she did was walk out of her home; bad things happen all the time. There was a rage murderer in my neighborhood last summer who took a hatchet to his parents and then shot anyone in view before he was caught hopping a fence.

Thing is though the victims in those cases didn't walk into an obviously bad situation. Someone brought the situation to them. And that sucks. That's more like being hit by someone who jumped the curb, as opposed to walking into traffic. Neither person deserves to get hit by a car, but it's far more likely for the latter, and they made it more likely. Which is the stupid part.
Not stupid for being attacked. Stupid for being where there was about a ninety percent chance it would happen. Were there not any safer trails? or streets with bike lanes? or a friend to go with her? Hell even one to talk on a cell phone with would have made it far less likely.
Just saying putting yourself in a bad situation is stupid. What happens to you isn't really your fault, but it still wouldn't have happened if you had been somewhere safer.

Haha, I guess I'm one of those stupid people. I often take walks late at night / early in the morning, although I'm never alone. A friend and I had a close call one night, though.

That's scary. :( At least you have a friend with you though. I mean even then it's not super safe, but alone is just... like walking into the street from my point of view.

I tend to take walks late at night(usually when I finish work), downtown. Im almost always alone, and listening to music too. There arent very many people out at that time most days, so I think I tend to be a bit of an idiot for that, but the way I walk, people intending harm would have a hard time not being noticed.

Wait a minute..."dumb" means "unable to speak"? That's so weird! O.o Does "stupid" even actually mean "stupid", then? Or is there some other meaning??
...Sorry. The awesomeness was distracting.
Anyways, I have to agree. Going out that late, alone, in the dark, to an area that is well-known for being dangerous...That's just stupid. It's not her fault that she was attacked or anything...but really, why would you even go there?
@Draciolus - Well...is it at least a relatively safe area?

Aww...that means I cant do anything. Life is unsafe. D:
All joking aside, I honestly keep an eye on my surroundings pretty much all the time, even at home. Call me paranoid, but I never leave myself exposed too much. Even when listening to my music very loud, Ive always got something at hand to either defend myself with, or to call for help with. And if all else fails, Ive surprised people with how quick I react, and how strong I actually am(I always play the "Im weak" card, which is total bullshit)

I do not look strong. I'm skinny and German.
However A marine bounced off of me when he hit me with a full side kick. :)
I'm stronger than I look, so people try to start stuff then get warned not to. XD

Alot of the time I walk in the "unsafe" area WANTING someone to try something, hopefully just with their fists and no weapons. But, due to the look on my face, and the way I walk, people tend to avoid me. But I always have a reason for wanting someone to try something. Typically Im so pissed that I would make a brick wall beg for mercy before I stopped punching it. And thats no exageration, it took one of my exes standing infront of me while I was punching a wall to stop, barely in time to avoid hitting her. >.>
I really need to get out onto the paintball field sometime soon...all this stress from LACK of common sense at work is going to kill me I swear.
