Being born and raised in Canada, I tend to have more of the "white" mindset. I absolutely love trying new things and new foods. I hope to one day explore the world once I am financially stable but would like to do it as young as possible before I start working a 9-5 job.

Today, I tried out this Indian sauce of some sort at Costco and loved it. However, my mom HATED it. She dislikes the "Indian" smell of the food. Being Vietnamese, she has never gone out to try other food other that Vietnamese restaurant. I on the other hand have tried many cuisines from the world and love them all. I wish that my parents are more opened to trying new things but they are stuck in that mindset of what they are used to. It pisses me off because I can't even get them to try sushi! The only time there is food variety for them is when they are invited to eat at a buffet or we're in Vegas and my uncle takes us out.

I was wondering, do you have people like that you know? Are you like that yourself?

I've known a few people over the years that refuse to try something just because they think they won't like it. It kind of reminds me of the way small children act just to be silly.

I mean, it's one thing if you know you won't like something because you've had something in it before, but it's another to completely refuse something because of the way it looks/smells/whatever if you've never tried it. :c

I love food too much to really deny anything unless it has meat or byproducts in it. I love Indian food personally. My sister hates the smell of curry and I make a lot of curry. My one friend used to not eat anything if she did not know what it was. She's just picky.

I'll pretty much eat anything you put in front of me.
My sister has these people from India that live next door to her in her apartment complex, and they love to cook. One night they brought over these quesadilla type-things with humas (..?) inside. DELICIOUS.
They were spicy so my lips went numb several times in the process of eating them but I just couldn't stop. It was fantastic.
I like to eat most foods but there's so many I haven't tried.
I think italian would have to be my absolute favorite. If food didn't make me fat, I would constantly be eating. That is SO BAD.
It's safe to say that I'm not the skinniest person but I'm not overweight. *whew*

But...but Indian food is so tasty ;-;

and so complicated to make! I'ma fail Indian, I can't make a single Indian food DX

I'm weird in the fact that I hate Grits, Fried Chicken, Ocra, basically all Southern foods ._.
and most hamburger chains ._.

and pretty much everything normal. I will effing eat anything 'weird' or ethinic though. Taiwan has the neatest foods 8D
i live in the South though, so I get made fun of (good naturedly) sometimes cause I hate most typical Southern food

It depends on the food and how it's presented, for me.

Example, we went to a buffet and they had fried frogs legs. I really had no interest in trying them and the added pressure to try them just turned me off on actually trying them. If we had been at home and some happened to be cooked up with everyone eating some, I probably would have tried them. I didn't say I hated; didn't say it was nasty; just simply stated that I had no interest in trying it at that time.

It does sadden me a bit when I find something that's delicious and want to share it, but no one wants to try it.
People should try things yes, but I think everyone reserves the right to not want to put something in their mouth no matter the reason. Regardless of how "good" other people say it is.
So I don't believe in pressuring others to try something if they don't want to try it, but I also believe that they shouldn't have a negative opinion on something until they do, taste-wise.
People can say things look bad if they can see it and they can say it smells bad if they can smell it. It's their opinion after all, but of course with at least a bit of respect. :XD

@ Iku - MAKE ME A SAMMICH.

Anyways..
I've never tried Indian food though, I've heard so many
good things about it. The spice is always 10 points
up for me, since I love spicy food like a mad man.

When it comes to food, I think 3 things come into play when trying
something new or exotic.
Texture, Scent, and Mentality.
I tried a mystery soup at this panda restaurant because
I felt like being adventurous. The first thing I put
in my mouth rubbed me the wrong way. Literally.
It smelled like cinnamon and honey, with a subtle scent
of tomato soup. My mentality is like Andrew Zimmerman's quote.
Quote:
If it looks good, eat it.

I'll admit, on occasion I'm a bit like that myself
I mean, I'm a bit of a picky eater. But it's only because I'm one of those people who obsess over texture (I can't help it). What REALLY ticks me off is when people say "Well, you could just get over it" I CAN'T GET OVER IT! THAT'S THE POINT.

But annyyywaaayysss (I'll try to stay on topic here XD) I'm not really like that with entire genres (?) of food. Like I'm not BIG on Chinese food, but I'm open to try something someone says is good. Just from my experience, I've found it greasy, and it doesn't sit well with me. But I like wonton soup. I'll admit that's quite good :D

The only thing I absolutely refuse to eat is seafood. The scent of fish repulses me like you wouldn't believe. I'll admit I've never eaten it (besides a tuna faze when I was 12 XD) but sometimes you simply KNOW if your going to like it, because taste has a lot to do with smell.

I am always excited for the chance to try new food, Indian is not among those I have yet been given a chance. Whether or not Indian food is tasty I do however have experience with the smell and it is rather unpleasant. We have an Indian family living upstairs to us in our complex and the smell of their food fills our kitchen and bathroom. My mother hates it, finds it offensive even. She is also not fond of the taste of the food, apparently she has tried it.

I will still try it although it smells unpleasant.

It might smell funny (mostly the curry) but it is yummy. I love Indian and other south Asian deserts. They're sweet but not that chemically sweet that most american sweets are. Nice and subtle. I love Ras Malai. I like that a lot of Indian cooking is vegetarian but still filling.

My grandmother has some racist tendencies due to the generation she grew up in, but that aside, she means well. I'm an extremely open person when it comes to people, food, etc, so it affects me greatly when she makes biased, negative comments on other cultures or people. Since I've lived with her, she's started becoming more open. She now will shop at the asian supermarkets and housewares stores, and eat at more ethnic foods restaurants, via my influence. She's admitted before that I've had a lot of positive influence on her, which makes me proud of her. She still has her biased opinions, but it's not as bad now. :)

If something smells spicy or looks particularly gooey, I won't eat it. I've never liked a lot of spices in my food, and it tends to make me sick. Gooey foods make me nauseous.

I know a lot of people who won't try something just because of the way it looks or smells or because it has something in it they claim to really hate (like onions). It doesn't bother me too much. If they don't want to eat it then that's perfectly fine. More for me, I guess.
