Binkies

We've all had them. Binkies, Babas, whatevers.
Well Mene what was your transitional item? You know that special item you had that made it a bit easier to grow up when you were a kid. Studies show about 75% of kids have one.

I had 2. A blanket with paired music box from my god father. The music box still sits on my bookshelf, the blanket is folded up on my pillows. I didn't have any weird names for them, but they were my transitional items.

I was that small percent that didn't have one. I refused a paci apparently, my mom didn't want me attatched to anything, hence, no blankie or teddy... I do remember having a Snuggles bear :) Oh how I loved my Snuggy. But, he wasn't a need.

I didn't have a binkie, but I did have a blanket and a stuffed animal! I remember carrying around my stuffed animal around (which was a plushie of Simba from the "Lion King") at the mall when I was little. I have that in box in the closet.
I'm not really sure what happened to the blanket, though my mom says my brothers burned it up. But my oldest brother foresaw me losing it somehow (or foresaw them burning it!) and before it mysteriously went missing, cut a square of it out for me. I'm honestly not sure how I haven't lost that since it's basically a 3x3 piece of fabric. But that's tacked to a corkboard upstairs. :D

I did have a dummy, but my mum got rid of it because I kept waking her up if it fell out of my mouth while I was asleep, so I turned to thumb sucking instead. It wasn't so much an item, but it certainly made things easier. Apart from that I also have a little yellow dog/bear called Jonah who I used to cart around everywhere. I love Jonah and in fact, I still have him sitting in my wardrobe. :3

I also had a baby shawl, but I wasn't attached to it. My mum has it sitting in the airing cupboard though. :3

I had a one when I was small, but my mom said I got over it when my little brother was born. I stopped playing with dolls and stuffed animals and sucking on things, I just liked playing with his tiny, little boy all the time. He was my snuggle buddy, and I got to drag his cradle all over the house, and fed him all my food.

My brother, on the other hand, had a blanket that my mom had to cut up and burn when he was five. He also still sucks on things (yeah, he's 18) because we let him have a binky until he was five, and again, took it away from him.

"Fumpy Blanket" and "Buggsy".
I was very tactile as a kid, and I loved the feel of satin, especially rubbing it against my nose while I sucked my thumb. For some reason, I referred to all satin as "fumpy".

"Fumpy Blanket" was one of those baby blankets with a satin edge, that I'd carry around everywhere with me, rubbing it against my nose when I felt tired. It was not just one blanket, a Fumpy Blanket would never last more than a few weeks, as eventually it would just unravel and fall apart or be so filthy my mum couldn't wash the stains out. So instead my parents used to buy loads of those baby blankets and cut it into quarters.

Then along came Buggsy. We had pet white rabbits at the time, and I was obsessed with Alice in Wonderland, so of course, white rabbits were my toy of choice.
My mum found a stuffed white rabbit with a cloth body in a bargain bin and kept it to give to me for Christmas as one of my "little surprises", not expecting that it would get played with very much. I opened up the rabbit, and lo and behold, his body was made of Fump!
I carried Buggsy everywhere with me for years. He was washed out and mended, and his seams repaired countless times.

I don't have him any more though, eventually he became torn beyond even my mum's repair.
Just too much love for a cheaply made toy.

I had a plush Little Foot from The Land Before Time. My grandma took me to see the movie when it was in theaters and after the movie she took me shopping and got me a Little Foot. I took him everywhere with me and slept with him.

He turned into a dog toy when I was in middle school after we got a yorkie puppy though. He tore the stuffing out of Little Foot so we had to toss him.

I'm adopted and my adoptive mom gave me a baby blanket when I was taken home from the hospital. I slept with it until I was about 10. But then one day I felt I didn't need it anymore and put it in a box. I still have but I haven't used it in over 12 years! I wasn't that attached to it. Like, I could sleep without it if I felt like it. Never had anything else. All my friends have a stuffed animal or something that they still use but I dont' XD

I didn't have a binkie nor could I remember if I had one. But my aunt gave me a stuffed bear when I was 7 or older. Though I don't sleep with it anymore, I sleep with a stuffed teddy. It doesn't necessarily have to be there but it is. My sister bought it for me though but it's not like I really need it.

I had a blanket, that was it. It ripped pretty badly when I was about five or six though. My mom felt it was time for it to go anyway, so she didn't sew it, and that was the end for me. xD
I was pretty upset, I did love that blanket. I eventually got over it though.

An elephant rattle! It looks and feels like a rattle, there's no hard bit like a regular plastic rattle, but he still makes excellent noises and he still sleeps in my bed, hahaha.

I must've been one of the few that didn't have one of these, I did however had a teddy bear I received in my 6th birthday which I was and still am quite fond of.

Krissy 08-26-2011 03:19 AM

Let's see - for me, it was two items as well (I guess we can call them items). One was a multicolored blanket that I mainly kept to cover my eyes when I slept, or would use it to fidget against my skin or something.

The other was my thumb. I never really got into binkies, but my thumb was my main issue. It took me so long to break the habit. >___< I think I stopped the thumb sucking officially around 1st or 2nd grade.

I had a teddy bear called Teddy and a pig stuff animal called Piggy (we were very imaginative people obviously). Both have actually moved with me when I married my husband. They don't sleep on the bed with us but I have them in a drawer nearby - I'm hoping that when I have children I can hand them down since they've only needed minor fixes.

I had/have a bunny in a pink silk dress named Charlotte. She was never an obsession, but whenever I couldn't sleep I'd always go and get her and hold her while I fell asleep. I still do occasionally. It's extremely rare, but she comforts me because she's my absolute favorite present ever from my grandmother, and my grandmother was the love of my life when I was a little girl. She always made me happy, so the bunny still always makes me really happy.

I didn't have a binkie, but I did have two dolls that I carried everywhere. My need/obsession for them was so bad that one time I got really sick & was put in the hospital one night & my dad had to drive @ 40 miles to get them for me. I was about 5 at the time. My mom repaired & refilled them many times over the years & I still have both of them. I have repaired them many times myself over the years. I even searched for a few months trying to find some replacement hands for one of them. The older of the dolls had plastic hands while the other one had fabric hands & it always bugged me. The fabric on the hand began to fall apart & her stuffing was falling out, but I finally found some plastic hands for her. :)
When I'm sick I still sometimes get them out to make me feel better.
