I Just Gave Blood

Sort of....

So, it turns out that because I'm young, my veins are still developing, and so the blood doesn't run from them well enough to donate enough blood to be useful. Or something like that, anyway.

So have you ever donated blood? How did it go for you?

O: So you weren't able to? D: I've never given blood er, volunteer-ly at least lol. I tried but parents wouldnt sign the paper blah blah e ue Though i suppose i'll be giving sometime... eventually XD

I'm terrified of needles and try to avoid them as much as possible.
I had to get some shots before I started school this year and when I got them I passed out in the chair.
I suppose I might donate if I wasn't this horrified, but I'm not 16 yet so legally, I can't actually give any.
We have a blood drive at my school and a bunch of my friends were old enough to do it so they did.
It's totally not a selfish thing either - "It's my blood! All mine!" - I just can't bear it.

Coincidentally, my favorite color is dark red...oh, the irony.

xD I had a friend no nurse could find her vein without stabbing her 7 times.
She became a nurse, she could do it on herself now xD

I can't give blood since I have thalassemia.
For some reason my partner cannot give blood if they've had relations with me even though it's a genetic disorder O.O

I've never attempted to donate blood before since I get anemia easily an I worry I'd faint or something. :sweat: But I should try next time if I see one of those 'donate-your-blood-here' buses...sounds like an interesting experience to go through, and it also helps others, so it seems like a win-win situation. :) My dad's donated loads of times, and he's gotten a bunch of random stuff from them...like coupons to a steakhouse, bars of soap, package of rice, coupons to buying pizza, etc...:XD

You have to be 18 in Canada to donate, I tried when I was 16 and the thing that disqualified me from donating is I take Seroquel (Quintiapine) which can cause a allergic reaction or a possible drug interaction from blood transfusions.

I would LOVE to give blood, but I have too many factors against me (I'm also borderline diabetic).

Bearzy 09-14-2011 09:48 AM

No, I was allowed to donate (only just, my iron count was 120. If it'd been 119, I wouldn't have been allowed.) But when the needle was in my arm - goddamn that thing was thick!- my blood ran too slowly, and it was causing bruising, so they stopped. I was told to try again in December.

I've given blood a few times, and it's always gone okay... but a lot of the time the nurses have trouble finding the vein, and Ive never been able to donate a full bag because it also runs too slow. They always tell me I'm dehydrated and need to drink more. ^^;

NeuzaKC 09-14-2011 11:10 AM

Ah, I'd love to donate blood... And yet, I'm not allowed too! I'm too skinny. ):

i have given blood a few times, mostly after a natural disaster because the spotlight was on giving blood,
or the blood donor vehicle was visible.
i am a needle phobic person so i don't often think of giving without a promt to do so.
however i do like the cookie and orange juice they give you afterwards ;] .

you can try again next year sweetie.

Elluh 09-14-2011 11:39 AM

I donated blood twice, I wasn't really
scared of needles. I heard you got
free cookies and a juice.
They have blood banks every
year at my school.
After the blood was taken out, I felt
fine so I stood up and started to walk
back to class..then I passed out for a bit.
; A ;
I got a free t-shirt though..that said "hero."
with like cool logos and stuff.
I wonder if they only gave it to the people that
passed out. xD;

I'm actually really terrified of giving blood, so I haven't. Especially because my family (both my mom and sister) have veins that are difficult to "find." So, they always end up with a needle in their arm being moved all around while they search for veins. I'm afraid of that happening to me. D;
Although, there was one time I mustered up the courage to get over myself and have it done, but I wasn't allowed. Apparently you're not allowed to give blood if you've gotten a tattoo within a year from that time. I tried, though. ]:

I've never given blood. The times I thought about it, I couldn't because I was either underweight or had just gotten a tattoo or piercing. :s

Shin~The ladle monster! 09-14-2011 06:38 PM

The blood bank is always calling me now ever since I donated a few times... and sometimes it makes my cell phone go off while I'm at work and I get in trouble because I forget to turn the ringer off. >.<

They kinda guilt you and put you on the spot when they call though. I felt like a monster last time they called and I told the nurse I had just gotten a piercing. x.x

I'm sorry, but that is the wrong thing to do just to get people to donate. I would've told her that if she and her company didn't stop harassing me, I would never donate to them again. There are blood banks out there that pay for your blood, anyway. >_>;

HIM_ROCK 09-14-2011 08:19 PM

I would give blood but seeing as I've had a tattoo done in the past 6 months I can't, plus I do have low iron levels at times which means I would get turned away and sometimes it's like getting blood out of a stone with me they could find the vein but no blood was going to come out.

lightkanna 09-14-2011 08:52 PM

I want to donate blood but I just don't know how to do so. Even so I run out of time to do it anyways. There's no one to drive me and I don't go to school but I totally would donate my blood. I'd like to know my type as well, as I am curious. 8D

Nonsensical 09-15-2011 12:06 AM

I donated blood a few years ago in high school. My grandparents had to sign a consent form because I wasn't 18. Even so, they were still surprised I went through with it. =/
And I didn't have any problems like that. The only thing I had to worry about was falling out of the chair! XD (I don't like leaning back, walking up/down stairs, etc.) They did have some weird rules, though... I don't remember what exactly, but I think the heights and weights were messed up. Like, the taller you were, the less you had to weigh. o_O

Mystic 09-15-2011 12:07 AM

I have lupus and have lymphoma so I can't donate blood. I never donated blood before because I've always been anemic or did not weigh enough to. I would if I could though.
