Black Friday on Wikipedia

Quote:

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, many retailers open very early, often at 4 a.m., or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season, similar to Boxing Day sales in many Commonwealth countries.
Quote:

Store aisles were jammed. Escalators were nonstop people. It was the first day of the Christmas shopping season and despite the economy, folks here went on a buying spree. ... "That's why the bus drivers and cab drivers call today 'Black Friday,'" a sales manager at Gimbels said as she watched a traffic cop trying to control a crowd of jaywalkers. "They think in terms of headaches it gives them."
Quote:

If the day is the year's biggest for retailers, why is it called Black Friday? Because it is a day retailers make profits -- black ink, said Grace McFeeley of Cherry Hill Mall. "I think it came from the media," said William Timmons of Strawbridge & Clothier. "It's the employees, we're the ones who call it Black Friday," said Belle Stephens of Moorestown Mall. "We work extra hard. It's a long hard day for the employees."
Black Friday. In my opinion it's not worth it. I've only ever been out shopping on it once, with my family. I recently moved to a bigger city and now work at two department-store like places. I work both jobs for BF; 7am-12pm at one and 1pm-10pm at the other (x wx)

Black Friday is chaotic, and something I'd rather avoid... As for how I do my christmas shopping.. I'll just stick to the thank the heavens it exists, internet shopping to avoid being flattened in massive crowds or ran over...

It's especially chaotic over here.

it's the most profitable day for retail markets in the United States.
sometimes that day makes or breaks a smaller business.
it's a lot of fun if you do it with friends and start your holiday off together.
you take a break and have breakfast and then lunch if you are still shopping.
it can be a whole lot of fun.
also they offer ridiculous buys to get you into their stores.
this year it's a battle between stores to open the earliest!
i usually try to do all my shopping for Christmas that day.
i have yet to do it, though.

TheEmpressofEvil 11-19-2011 10:45 PM

I know how important black friday is for the us economy but I wish the stores would just back off a little. Like it makes me sad that my bf is technically going to be working on thanksgiving day because Fry's has to compete with best buy. I told him and his coworkers they better make sure they get holiday pay for that extra time too! I'll call labor board for them if I have to! I guess really I'm just sad. I'd like my time with my bf and his family.

hummy 11-20-2011 12:58 AM

i can understand how you feel, ebil.
you can always have your holiday on a different day.
i've done that my whole life.
really the holiday is in your heart and being with the people you love.

TheEmpressofEvil 11-20-2011 01:08 AM

very true and I am still really thankful that my bf and his family still get to be here with mine for most of the day. that part makes me really happy. and who knows, maybe one year we'll all go shopping on black friday as a big group and it'll be fun.

hummy 11-20-2011 01:10 AM

that would be really fun.
i hope your boyfriend doesn't have to work until midnight.
i have gone to best buy before, i think they opened up at five thirty in the morning or something.
it was so crowded and they had you in this corral windie labrynith thingie to pay.
it was the last time i went to best buy.
seriously.
it drove me insane and i wanted to leave but they had you barricaded with large appliances!

TheEmpressofEvil 11-20-2011 01:15 AM

fry's opened at 5 last year I believe. this year he has to go in at 10. But since he lives 2 hours from me he'll be leaving pretty early from my house to make sure that he's there in time.

Black Friday refers to one of our worst natural disasters here. :/ Nothing to be happy about with a large bushfire.

Explicitt 11-20-2011 03:07 AM

i tend to stay away from Black friday shopping xD last time i whrnt some lady tried to fight me for a video game ;-; i rather shop online

Sora 11-20-2011 05:07 AM

i'm sorry to hear about the large bushfire.
i hope you and your family and friends were not hurt or lost anything.

this is just the start of the holiday shopping season in the United States.
no disrespect intended, Pa-chinko.

TheEmpressofEvil 11-20-2011 04:49 PM

isn't there an internet monday? like black friday for online things? If so, when is that? is it the monday after thanksgiving or before?

hummy 11-20-2011 08:17 PM

I just added the 'cyber monday' to the title.
i felt badly about the bringing up of bad feelings for people and thought the 'cyber mondy' would clearify it a bit.
i am still a bit behind in adding information but i will try to get there as quickly as possible.
cyber monday is on the monday after thanksgiving.
most places will offer sales begining at midnight.
but i have heard some will be going on all weekend.
it's good to check your favorite online sites.
and please pass on any information you find.
thank you!

a great vegetairian magazine is on sale and i thought you guys might be interested in.
i hope it's okay to ping you all.
Cherry Flavored Antacid:, Algas, FireOnix:.
the link is on page one in the second post.

FireOnix 11-20-2011 09:21 PM

yep 'cyber monday' was more of less created by buyers demand. because now that buying things on the net has become common place there have been to many people who were complaining to companies that they weren't able to get whatever they were trying to get in the store. and cyber monday allows companies to sell directly from their warehouse instead of stores, warehouses obviously have more room then stores and hold more then the limited number of an item then a store.

I worked retail/department stores for about 5 years.... :) thanks for the ping hummy

TheEmpressofEvil 11-20-2011 10:26 PM

Ah I'd only really heard about cyber monday and never participated. I think I'll definitely check that to though!

still not sure about black friday... I hear so many violent stories, I'm scared of being out. Maybe if I can convince other people they want to go too but so far no one's interested. They probably won't be until thanksgiving.

hummy 11-20-2011 10:39 PM

i was too broke for cyber monday last year from black friday shopping ;p.
i think it's kind of fun to go out for black monday, walk off a few calories from thanksgiving and get into the holiday spirit.
if you can get someone to go out with you it's a lot of fun.
you can share freezing together and you can split up when you get inside and get two of what you can to share with each other.
sort of like tag team shopping.

plus it saves on shipping to the retail stores.
and you get people into your website by the thought of saving BIG ;}.
no problem, Fire, i hope it was okay to ping.
i just thought you would like to see the vegetarian magazine at such a savings.
thank you for posting.

FireOnix 11-20-2011 11:30 PM

black friday can be super crazy and you can literally spend hours standing in the checkout line. I personally think the whole shopping spree type atmosphere is way to crazy and everyone should chill...speaking from the point of view of a cashier

Cherry Who? 11-21-2011 01:39 AM

The magazine offer is tempting, hummy, but when I go to add the magazine to my cart, my browser tells me the website is dangerous. I can't risk credit card info with that. Thanks, though. :)

Ashlyn Mae 11-21-2011 02:38 AM

I work both Thanksgiving [ I signed up to, it's time and a half ] and Black Friday. I have no intentions of buying ANYTHING on Black Friday, it's just too crazy to even think about doing it -- I know people that will be up all day Thanksgiving and Black Friday to shop.

I have only gone out shopping ONCE on Thanksgiving, a few years ago but it was either that or not have a TV for the whole weekend.

aw, sorry Cherry.
i didn't check any of the buying parts of the offer,
just to make sure it went to the correct offer.
it was such a sweet deal too.

cyber monday is a way to get people to shop online.
wal*mart has specials for online as well as their black friday sales.
it's a way to get peoples monies even if they don't want to come to the store and shop.
