Didn't read entire forum because it's rather long. Disregard my opinion if it's all been said already.
Zombies aren't the biggest problem in a zombie apocalypse. Go figure. The other raiders are. Zombies as the "living dead" as we know them are exactly that, dead. Tissue doesn't mend if the body doesn't metabolize. Physical activity causes breakdown of the muscles to some degree or another. Hunker down in your fallout shelters for a month or two and the zombie "hoards" will have to mobility of your average Magikarp. And that is, by the way, the best way to see it through the initial stages of the apocalypse. Find yourself a pretty hole to hide in. All those "badasses" out to fight zombies are as good as dead as far as I'm concerned. Learn first aid. Learn how to care for a rifle. Learn how to hunt/clean animals. Learn a form of martial art. Doesn't matter which, it'll teach you to hit something that wants to hit you, and most have good enough conditioning program to go with it. Learn how to make a fire. Learn how to build a shelter. Learn how to set traps. Before I get too repetitive, you want to learn how to be a boyscout on steroids. You want to be able to come out of it with most of your pieces no matter where you are. Resources are scare, you've got some and others want them. It's easier to steal from a corpse than share and play nice. Firearms will be most effective in the beginning of the apocalypse. But as ammunition runs scarce, guns will outnumber bullets. Always pick up ANY ammunition you find. Chances are it'll get to the point that you're more likely to find the gun it goes in than ammunition for the ones you have. And carbines and light rifles will be the most effective and most encountered firearms for the most part. Gung ho zombie killers relying solely on handguns will die off faster than the former. But, of course, something is better than nothing, just remember that just because it looks cool in movies doesn't always mean it's a good idea. AK's are an excellent choice, so long as you get one from a reputable source. Questionable Chinese models can likely be acquired from sketchy sources on the cheap, but you probably get what you pay for. It's a Reasonably sized carbine that is very reliable and not overly expensive. Ammunition isn't very hard to get a hold of either, and drum mags can be had to hold alla 'dem bullets. .22 caliber rifles are another good choice. Excellent beginners rifle for those with little to no experience. Light weight, cheap, easy to maintain, and more or less the cheapest ammunition of any gun on the market today. Stockpile as much as you want, you can afford it. They also have enough punch to enter a target (chest cavity?) but less so in exiting. It can cause ricochet in the body and potentially do a lot more damage than you bargained for. As did see mentioned, crossbows are fairly kickass as well. Become proficient at making your own bolts and don't sweat running out. No muzzle flash and shooting quietly makes it excellent for night fighting. Bows are along the same lines but require more proficiency to use reliably. Close quarter combat become more and more common as the firearms run their course. Protip: get yourself a good kukri. Not only does it double as a knife and an axe for survival duties, but the forward curve gives you that extra heft that can cut through limbs with the proper force behind it. That's as close to a person as I'd want to get, though, and that's pushing it. Small tactical knives are most effective when you have the drop on somebody allowing you to kill them (only potentially) silently, which is less likely than you might think. If they've survived more than a few months, they're either part of a large organization which won't be happy about you sneaking around stabbing their ranks or they just happen to be tough as nails and will likely kill you if you try to sneak up on them. This is absolutely NOT to say a Ka-Bar is dead weight in your pack. If I could pick only one thing to to go on a camping trip with, a good knife is it. It can be a workhorse for utility tasks and be well worth it's weight in gold long before you need it to defend your life, which is better than nothing in most cases. If you can manage to secure a safe zone and fortify the hell out of it as opposed to scavenging as you go along, you want to be somewhere that is the very description of nowhere, somewhere that no one is ever going to find being your minimum requirement. You need a source of clean water, food, and heat climate depending. Make a checklist of requirements going from most important in keeping yourself and any group members alive to the least. Remember to tend to the wounded! That awesome fortified wall you built isn't going to save you from hypothermia. If you aren't going to die from the lack of bodily essentials, start seeing what else you can do to increase your chances of survival. Build/fortify shelters but don't give away your location in doing so. Your secret island retreat isn't a secret when you have searchlights, roadblocks, and spikes all along the beach. And no matter how intimidating your defenses look, some crazed ex Navy SEALS will come and infiltrate your base, kill you, and take your stuff. They're a real killjoy. Stockpile what you can and become familiar with the general area. It'll give you a distinct advantage in the event of a siege. Speaking of sieges... learn how to take out someone else's hideout because your life might depend on it. Explosives are your friend, and there are enough that can be made fairly easily. A sound method of breaching gate is to let yourself right in instead of knocking. Find the biggest heaviest truck you can manage to get running, get it started, tie down the accelerator, and let it coast right on through the wall of their fort. Strap some explosives where ever you may, and you just found yourself an invitation to someone else's private party. A good shot with a long rifle will be plenty useful in taking out sentries outside the range the gun can be heard, so long as ammunition can be had. This post is getting lengthy and I'm starting to fear I'm skipping far too many details for my liking. I'm going to cut it off, but if someone here actually learned something, feel free to ask for more. |
You best bet for CQC isn't necessarily a Kukri though one could come in handy, it could also be something more akin to a machete on a pole of wood giving you reach that other's don't have. Also a machete style is easier to create out of things such as road signs and other things you can find making it much easier to replace if lost, stolen, or broken.
Also using a bow and making your own arrows would ensure a long period of time with ranged weaponry and if that fails spears are easy to make. Also it's a bit unfair to assume that one lone Navy Seal operating with no support team, no intel, and no idea on what they are up against is always gonna be able to breach defenses and kill every person inside. Seal are good, don't give me wrong, but they are trained as a team back up with intel, even they can get caught in a bad situation cause of a lack of both and that's when they're at their weakest. I do agree that over the top flashy measures are nothing more than a "here we are" sign though, but your biggest worry isn't the one solid snake, but the large groups that draw your attention to one spot and begin to sap your resources. Hunting down one guy in a camp where you know everyone is easier than it seems. More so if you have locks on your doors cause ,more than likely, as time goes by less and less people are going to have lockpick kits or be walking around with a pair of bolt cutters. On the point of sieges, getting a truck to work just to ram it into a door is a waste of time, gas, parts, and manpower. Build a balista or catapult load that with explosives and rain hell down, these weapons, aside from their ammo, can be reused more often than a truckram with much less maintenance. Sure it takes time to build those things to, but you get more use out of them and besides, you should NEVER attack anyone's base of operations without taking days even weeks to plan. In more wooded areas it may be more useful to save you long rifle ammo for hunting and stick with bows from the treeline for your ranged attacks. If you have a bodkin arrow head it will pass neatly through most bullet resistant vests that may have otherwise forced you to consume more ammo. Also flaming arrows to some of the more flammable parts of a camp can cause panic and confusion letting you get the upper hand. Never underestimate the power of tech long past. This is just a few opinions, though I agree with the brunt of your post. Happy Hunting friend. :D |

@Drizzle & Rem;
*DELAYED* O_O I just read all of the older comments on this thread and I'm so pissed I didn't respond until now. I missed not only Resident Evil, Wesker loving, final fantasy, Jurrasic Park, REPO!, Silent Hill, and tentacle monsters?! D; SUPER SADFACE. And yeah man. If your both alive and anywhere near Idaho or California I'd be down to team up haha~! |
That would be absolutely insane, and I'm not certain what we would do. We are completely and totally unprepared for the Zombie Apocalypse as it stands now, but I suppose we would be able to figure out a way to get through it. We tend to be quick on our feet, so to speak.
I suppose we will find out when the day comes, though I don't believe anything is going to happen. |
I heard on yahoo soldiers were doing a mock zombie appocalypse training on an island.

HAHA! Seriously?! I vaguely remember the CDC posting something about survival methods to use during a zombie outbreak and then they also denied there ever being one or a possibility for one after the Florida, USA accident. |
Ooh, dear sweetness. One of my favorite topics to pass the time with. What would I do?
Well, say a zombie apocalypse does happen. There are many things to consider. The weather, wildlife, protection, food, transportation, populated areas, fuel.. uuugh, you name it. Zombies are considered dead humans that walk the earth with a hunger that can never be satisfied. Strange.. organs no longer work, wouldn't their stomach explode if they eat too many people since they can no longer digest food...? Anyway, I would consider that a possibility as well as the weather being able to cause them damage since their bodies seem to fall apart easier. A tornado, hurricane, earthquake, bad storm, and even hail could cause them serious damage. So that could be both on the living's side and against them. My first step would be to find a gun, a few other weapons(shovel, hoe, knife, axe - anything of the sort), try to gather up food, ammo, supplies and try to make my way out of the city. I live in a small city. After the initial shock of it all and a few days pass and the cities have already been overrun, my goal would to be able to get more supplies, get organized. Hopefully I will have family members with me that could help out. An ideal thing would be to find a farm (plenty around here) and disappear deep the the middle of the woods where no one is around (also plenty of that around here) and with lookouts and stuff, set up a small camp where every member, no matter how small, would practice shooting a bow (if one was acquired), throwing knives, hitting obstacles, you know.. practicing on hitting a zombie good enough to take one out. Because I knew damn well that I couldn't hit one perfectly in the head without any practice! Then after knowing how to kill, send a small party of people (assuming I am in a group) into a city to gather further supplies. Get in. Get out. My next goal would be to head to the tropics. Why the tropics? Hot, sweaty, flies.. yuck. But, that weather is more zombie proof. The heat would cause them to decay faster, to fall apart. The flies would feast and the animals are more dangerous as well. The tropics.. with a coast. Hurricanes would help tear them apart. Just a couple of ideas... I have a LOT more. xDD I am a zombie fanatic... And I watch a lot of The Walking Dead. |
Actually I read some of the thread but the military was actually doing a zombie invasion scenario on an island exercise. I thought that was kind of interesting-- I think it may relate to more of civil unrest perhaps.

I'm using the impending 2012 Apocalypse as an excuse to make my own flamethrower.
Apparently you can legally carry one here in New Jersey (plus I always wanted a flamethrower - they're so cool!) If anything WERE to happen, I'm pretty sure my family and I would grab melee weapons and bunker down in our home. We'd have a car loaded and ready in case we were forced to leave. My mom is already preparing for it with lots of water and nonperishable foods. And my dad is preparing to stock up on gas. In terms of guns, I'd have my boyfriend come and stay with us (he has 2 and knows how to hunt & fish). I think I better be well acquainted with first aid preparation, just in case. I wouldn't know where to go though. If it's a zombie apocalypse, I would attempt to go up in the mountains or to Madagascar (it's the best place to go to during an epidemic apparently). Basically, anywhere that's totally isolated and with strong natural barriers. |
Well, I've had little to do all day so here we go... xD
What about weapons? I'd bring along my Taurus PT 92 9mm of course, versatile, accurate, and I have a heap of magazines. If we're talking about the slow walking dead I'd carry along my Sig Mosquito and scoped Ruger 10-22, a .22 caliber handgun and rifle, respectively. The ammunition is lightweight, small, and plentiful. Perfect for brain smashing! I'd grab a machete too. I would want to find some motorcycle safety gear for protection. The Kevlar would be thick enough to keep your limbs safe from being bitten into. As for transportation I'd either stick with my mountain bike because it's quiet and doesn't need any fuel. If I did take a car I'd find a diesel which can run on just about anything. I'd keep moving as far away from everyone as possible. If I go South there's one town and then it's all farmland. There's plenty of streams and luckily I have three different ways to purify water x3. |
The only thing I'm worried about is after the zombie apocolypse has happen WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO CLEAN UP ?! Seriously think about it unless the zombies organize themselves there'll be rotting body parts all over the place and what happens when they turn into mush

At least with the black death people came round to take the dead away.
Althought would the zombies eat each other in some sort of weird canniblistic clean up or do they just prefer freash meat ? |
MY ZERMBIE THREAD!! I THOUGHT I LOST YOU MY PRECIOUS!!! XDD
So, sadly, no zombie apocalypse on 12/21/12 ... but, never fear, for I will not give up hope of mindless zermbies devouring the brains of the masses!! One day my pets.. one day!!! Now, for anyone who see this, could you please remind me how to alert people or ping or whatever it's called? I've been gone a long time, and I can't remember! XD Thanks! |
I would have veryily much liked to have been a part of this thread! If only I had joined Mene sooner!! Me and zombies are good pals, it's a shame we couldn't have a zombie apocalypse! Would have been great fun! What with the brains, the running, and screaming... ah, good times man, good times!!

I've always thought about what I would do if a zombie apocalypse happened.
I'm sitting here thinking I'm gonna get a crossbow and be totally ready for anything that comes my way. Gather up me and my boyfriend and his sister and just kill and live together in awesomeness. But then I snap back to reality where I haven't prepared at all and all I do all day is sit and use the internet instead of going and preparing for any of this. I'm poor and I fend off my mother and so when zombies come to eat me I'll probably just let them. Another thought of mine is thus: Why would I WANT to live in a post-apocalyptic world? That sounds AWFUL. I'd much rather just die than fight to live in peace. And there's also the fact that you have to live with the thought of all of your family members being eaten alive or infected with the disease. I wouldn't want to think about that. And what if you are fighting your way through this shit with the people you love the most and you lose one along the way? That would SUCK. Ugh. Such a terrible thought. |
XD I think that's how most people think it'll go, have a weapon be bad ass! And don't forget your cardio!
It would be a truly horrible situation, you always would have to worry about what would happen next. That's what would make it easier for the people who can really thrive in that event, all the people who just give up. And obviously all of this is theoretical anyway, so not like it matters! lol, it's pretty cool to see different peoples opinions and what they would do. For me? It would be like one big, epic, survival horror game played out in real life! (hopefully they don't go Resident Evil 5 on our asses, I want normal zombies! XD) Perhaps I'm weird, but I really do wish this could happen. |
