PIPA is slowly losing all of its support due to the blackouts from today (January 18, 2012)!!!
For those who don't want to click the link, I'll just make this simple.
Today, in the afternoon, starting from around 2:45pm, senators across the country began to withdraw their support for PIPA. The blackout barely started yet, and already Senators were abandoning the bill.
As of now, it is confirmed that 4 co-sponsors, 2 representatives (Nebraska, Arizona), and 2 normal senators have abandoned the bill.
That makes 8 senators/representatives down!
Let's continue to flood the reps and Senators with our emails, explaining how bad this bill is going to be for, not just us, but the entire world.

You really don't even have to do that!
Just by googling phrases like "contact representative PIPA", you can find protest sites that allow you to send emails to your reps based on where you live. I used one site (don't remember which -- so that means you should just go through ALL of them :3) where it was even able to see which division of my state I was in.
Let's go, you guys! We're doing great!
I'll try to research some stuff every day for this... so, hopefully, we'll be able to track PIPA's movements!
...There should be another blackout day sometimes, except this time, the entire sites should be blacked out (ex. tumblr was not blocked -- the dashboard was open for everyone, but if you chose to, you could have your individual blog blocked -- I find that not too right... they should block out everything next time, if there's a next time).
Here are a whole bunch of sites that can allow you to sign petitions and contact your fellow senators/reps.
Contacting reps via Facebook and Twitter

Send an email to all your reps via OpenCongress, the site that lets you track different bills. Useful in the fact that you can put in facts that OpenCongress has gathered about the bill.

The fact that SOPA and PIPA are even being considered chills me to the bone. This is America, the land of the free, so why are we even having to protest something as against free speech as this? It’s an outrage. And I hope this and every message like this gets re-blogged and re-posted time and time again until we have a overwhelmingly gigantic amount of people standing up against this monstrosity. Spread the word. Write to congress. Don’t let them take our internet away.

As there seems to be some confusion about what the facts of this story mean for the future of SOPA and PIPA, we would like to clarify that as of the time of this update, 37 U.S. Senators support PIPA, 21 oppose it and six say they are leaning toward voting no. 27 U.S. House members support SOPA, 87 are in opposition and 34 are leaning toward no.
|
So, we don't really have the Senate on our side yet, but the majority of the House members are on our side!

Any reactions to the take-down of megaupload?
I think it's a bit scary that the U.S. government was about to this, to be honest. I understand the copyright issues, but a lot of people lost their backup files and perfectly legal uploads. It's also a bit of a slap in the face following the success of the SOPA/PIPA blackouts the day before. :(

I was pretty ticked off, actually... Megaupload was actually a pretty legit site. And lots of people had backed-up files and stuff, so now they're gone, and everyone's furious....
I'm completely against the government on this one -.-
Thing is that the government didn't do it as retaliation for the blackout Wednesday.... Megavideo was actually being monitored by the FBI for 2 years. So... it's more the FBI... but still...

The Texas Congressman whose proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) prompted dozens of websites to go dark or run protest messages this week said Friday he is pulling the measure from consideration "until there is wider agreement on a solution."

HE IS PULLING SOPA OUT.
We can stop worrying about SOPA now, until they start revising certain laws.
But, seriously, LOOK AT WHAT THE INTERNET DID.

Blackout Wednesday did its job!

Other filesharing sites are now banning U.S. IP addresses in response to the megaupload shutdown. :(
In other news, the bill has already been brought up again, in the form of a 'Protect Children from Online Pornography Act'. Lol, there is no way this bill won't pass because everyone will be too scared to vote against it. We're screwed. Basically, from my understanding, the protect children bill will require our internet providers to save a record of all the sites we visit, which can then be accessed by the government without a warrant. Of course, the bill does not limit itself to child porn, but can be used to investigate anyone without reason.

EDIT: This is very fitting. :)
