Keyori: I used blonde hairdyes on my hair every once in a while(which is probably not the best thing to do) (I was desperate, since my hair refuses to change colour, and I really wanted it lighter!), and my dark brown hair is now a weird, light shade of goldeny/coppery brown in the sun, but maybe a medium-warm brown otherwise. When I was away on holiday last year, I tried using lemon juice while sunbathing. I guess it worked slightly, but I don't know if it was worth the stickiness! I hadn't been able to find a product like Sun-in.

Cherry: I think I need to go with something similar to that picture you posted for me! Though I don't want too much hair on my forehead. I had a full fringe/bangs before and it hides my face and builds up oil on my skin. Maybe something of that length though... I really need to find a good hairdresser! >.<

Cherry Who? 03-06-2012 07:54 PM

Keyori - Sun? What is sun?

Pa-chinko - Oh no, your poor hair.

Lunanuova - Ooh, yeah, bangs may not be the best idea then.

I always hear that it's a good idea to get your hair done at a beauty school. The price is the same as at some cheapo place, but you're getting students who have just learned all sorts of interesting stuff and who want to experiment. Plus, instructors are always standing by to stop them before they do something crazy and wreck your hair. Try googling some areas near you with "beauty school." You might find someone who can help guide you to the perfect style for you. :)

My hair's kind of frustrating me right now actually. xD

Over the summer, I decided to get it cut really short (or really short for me, at least) and layered, and I styled it like this for a long time. (It was actually quite a bit shorter than in that picture when I first had it cut, though.)

I don't know why it is, but I'm never really content with having short hair. I did like my hair in that style, but I decided a few months after I got it cut to try to grow it out really long again. I guess for some reason I always feel like I have to be working toward some goal with my hair. xD Right now, I would like to grow it out to about halfway down my back and be able to curl it. My hair is so thick that when I try to curl it at the length it is now, it pretty much just turns into two big, poofy things on each side of my head. xDD

It's a little above shoulder-length at the moment, though, and I can't do the flip thing with it anymore, so I just straighten it everyday, and one side seems to be getting pretty fried. I don't really know what to do, though, because my hair looks rather dreadful when I DON'T straighten it. >.> I think I'm going to experiment over spring break, though. xD

ElysiumFate 03-07-2012 03:47 AM

@Cherry: The honey thing actually worked! :O Not perfectly, but it made my hair look uber healthy.

Cherry Who? 03-07-2012 06:17 AM

Mika - Not straightening really best for your hair's health. I hope you're able to find a way to work it naturally that looks right for you!

Elysium - Oh, I'm so glad that helped! How thoroughly you rinse it can have a big effect on it, too. Maybe if you rinse it just a teeeeensy bit less time it might work even better. Or it might be clumpy and greasy. Who knows!

StrangeMwarn 03-07-2012 06:57 AM

I just wash my hair like every other day sometimes every day, it really just depends on my mood.
I usually keep it cut to about an inch long...but one year i let it grow to somewhere near 8 inches XD.
My hair gets REALLY curly when it gets long, but only on the ends, and my hair also becomes extra poofy right after washing it, so poofy that it nearly looks like a mini-fro XD.

ElysiumFate 03-07-2012 08:10 AM

@Cherry: I think that my problem is that I like to take really hot showers, and hot water both dries out hair and rinses out product a lot better than cooler water. I'm pretty sure that if I turned the water temp down when I was rinsing out my hair, it'd help.

Dionysus 03-07-2012 08:45 AM

My hair is naturally wavy to curly and a bit poofy. I'm still figuring out how to deal with my hair because it seems to be so overly tempermental!

GypsyDancer 03-12-2012 10:34 AM

First I will start by admitting that I clicked on this topic because it has my name in it twice and "hair" was the big word so it piqued my interest. Anyway, onto the actual topic! My hair in its naturalist form is blonde and curly. Sometimes I get those ringlets, but most of the time it's a big monster that eats my head. Now over the past couple of years I've dyed my hair every color my mother would let me get away with, which included shades of pink, purple, red, blue, brown, black, and lots of bleaching in between. So that's caused some damage but not as much as you'd think. What caused the most damage was the straightening I've done, and still do. My hair is extremely thick, as in I find stuff in my hair that I've lost, and curly so to straighten it requires high amounts of heat. Needless to say, I tend not to straighten my hair as often. But my one friend insists it looks better straight so I let her straighten it and several times she has almost set my hair on fire, actually she did once but it was only on one small section so I got a really cute hair cut to even my hair out. As far as maintenance goes, I wash it every other day or every three days depending on how lazy I am, each shower I shampoo and condition with Suave Curl Care or Herbal Essences Hydrolicious, after shower I put in Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly mousse and Aussie Kink Spray just so my curls stay curls and not a big mess of frizz that looks like it's attacking my head. It's generally humid here which is why my hair is always frizzy, if it isn't frizzy then it's full of static so I look like I stuck my finger in a light socket. As far as cuts, the best hair cut I've gotten was my A-line bob in seventh grade because it was long enough to look good straight or curly and it was low maintenance and the worst one I've had in the history of forever was a "Nancy Drew" bob that curled under my chin. I literally had coconut head. -shudder- Only four people are allowed to cut my hair; my mom, me, Christie at the Barber Shop, and Jennifer at Studio 1604. Other than that it's a no go and I always have lots of reference photos before ANYONE works on my hair. Oh! And right now my hair is just below shoulder length and it's dark brown almost black.

maidenroseheart 03-12-2012 12:30 PM

I'll describe my hair, what I do with it, and then beg for advice. In that order ;)

My hair is sorta wavy and sometimes with enough mouse can hold the curl it can get when wet. However it slowly loses it as the day wears on no matter what is in my hair. It can get poofy or frizzy, at least to me, when it is down so I have recently learned to french braid it. Otherwise it seems to always be in the way. It is not very fine, but not thick either. Sorta in the middle... with a few random and hard to find strands of hair that are literally 10x thicker than 99.99999999999991% of my hair.

I use shampoo and conditioner. I manage the whispy frizz with detangler. If I feel like putting more work into it, maybe once a week I'll use a cream or mousse as well. Try to wash it everyday, but lately it has been every other day.

Since I was little, my scalp has been super dry. I have tried pantene pro v, suave, and the walmart brand of head and shoulders. Yet my scalp is still dry with big white flakes. Tempted to buzz it all off so I can get a mirror and look at it without the hair in the way... figure out what the heck is wrong with it. (yes, I'm female) Help?

Cherry Who? 03-12-2012 06:14 PM

Do you brush it once it's dry or partially dry? That's a no-no for curly/wavy and poofy hair. If I brush my hair when it's dry, it looks awful, so I only brush it dry in the morning right before I shower.

I have dandruff too, and I use proper head & shoulders. I've always liked "sea lift," but I have a pretty oily scalp. You might want to go with "smooth and silky" (or it's something like that). That one was too moisturizing for my oily head, but if you're very dry, that might work better for you. Garnier has an anti-dandruff shampoo now too, and it works pretty nice. And there's always Selsun Blue. Just make sure that when you wash your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo, you're actually scrubbing your scalp. I know when I wash my hair, if I'm not paying attention I'll barely touch my scalp at all, just my hair. You've got to get in there and (gently) scrub it. Especially up front by your hairline, where the dandruff is most noticeable.

Gypsy - Well, I used your name in the title and you used mine in your post. My name's Christy.

Knerd 03-12-2012 06:21 PM

Have you guys ever considered doing an ACV rinse for dandruff? That's always worked for me in the past and it's much better for your hair than harsh shampoo.

Just buy a bottle of apple cider vinegar and mix 1 cup of it with 2-3 cups of water. Make sure it's warm water otherwise you're going to get a nasty shock in the shower. Go about your shower as normal and wet down all your hair, running your fingers through it a little to soak it through. Then take the acv mixture and slowly dump it over your head. You can work your fingers into it a bit, especially along your scalp, just to make sure that it gets everywhere. Then let it soak in for minute or so, finish showering, and use cool water to gently rinse it out. You don't really have to worry about rinsing it all out, though, leaving it in won't do any harm. The smell will completely go away once your hair is dry.

ACV rinses are a more natural way to treat dandruff and make your hair shiny and soft again. I do one about every 2 weeks and it's a big help. It can even replace shampoo.

Cherry Who? 03-12-2012 06:27 PM

I used to dump a little straight ACV (and later, white vinegar) on to help combat my oiliness. It did help that, but I eventually stopped using it because I was afraid it might only be exacerbating the oiliness. Once I stopped, I didn't really notice anything get worse, so I figured it was good. But lately my dandruff has been getting a little worse, so yeah, I might want to try that occasionally again. In fact, I haven't showered yet today, so I'll try it when I do!

Knerd 03-12-2012 06:30 PM

Give it a shot! I always see an immediate difference, so you'll know if it helped by the end of the day.

arcticfoxxy64 03-12-2012 07:56 PM

Oo! I've had really long hair... Twice! And I'm growing it out again!

Just pointers for those who are looking to grow theirs out;

• Use a good conditioner and keep it brushed to avoid split ends
• When it reaches your waist, using a paddle brush is best. (it's sort of a rectangle shape)
• If you want to dye it, only do the tips/ends, if you do the entire head... It costs a LOT to keep it up, and it also takes up a lot of time.
• Especially, DO NOT bleach it blonde when it is long, if it is NOT your natural color. It will turn into this big white, yellow, blonde, copper mess, because one part will set for a long time, and one won't.
• I recommend trimming it only when the ends get bad. Even then, cut it on your own. But use a pair of good scissors and take off just enough. If you're scared to cut it on your own, then go to a salon that you trust, and tell them ONLY that amount of hair off... But I got a trim once, and I did that, they cut it from mid-thigh to waist, when I only said half and inch...
• Good luck!

Knerd 03-13-2012 10:08 PM

Yep, I agree about trimming it yourself, only when you need to. Don't even trim if you can help it! Just dust your hair.

Dusting is when you sit down with a sharp pair of scissors and seek out split ends. Just cut them off one at a time when you spot them. It'll help you keep your hair length and prevent the damage from creeping up towards your scalp. It sounds weird and monotonous, but it's an easy habit to keep and can be kind of addicting.

OHH LA LA :3
I love my hair. It's layered and colored dark brown, and I have blonde peek-a-boos.
Often I just leave it to dry after a shower because I have a nice natural wave/curl.
Sometimes I'll straighten it for school or if I'm going out. My sister curled it once with an iron and it actually looked really pretty, but I'm incapable of doing it on myself so I guess I'm a bit SOL. I think most of you are imagining a scene girl with puffed up layers, but it's not like that. Thats me down below, when my sister curled my hair. Anything you see that's light is the blonde. :D

Cherry Who? 03-13-2012 11:40 PM

Your hair looks cute! :)

Knerd - The ACV wash helped a lot! I was a bit too lazy to dilute it in water, so I just poured it on straight. It had been so long since I did it anyway, I'm sure it didn't hurt. Even when I was rinsing it out, I could feel a difference. I forgot how much that stuff helps with build up! I had been having a problem with that (and vinegar totally skipped my mind when thinking of how to fix it - durr  ) and it cleaned it right up. My hair feels much softer and smoother, and my dandruff's not noticeable unless I start scratching at my head. Thanks for the reminder! I'll need to reincorporate this into my routine now. :)

Regarding split ends, I don't have any. My hair just breaks off right off at the crown. :?

jupiter 03-14-2012 09:35 AM

Thanks for the tip on the Apple Cider Vinegar; I remember using it for all sorts of stomach and liver issues, but never considered using it on hair. I use vinegar all the time to clean spots after my room mates pets; gets rid of the smell in the carpet. And it gets rid of that weird funk smell in a car if you spilled too many lattes after a winter freeze.

LoveAria 03-14-2012 04:42 PM

Thanks!

Repo 03-14-2012 04:46 PM

My hair is up in a pony tail all the time now, as I'm trying to grow it out and I heard an old wives tale that said it would grow faster if it was in a pony tail. >3>;;

Other than that, my hair is in that middle-awkward stage where its not quite short, but not quite long. I can't really do much of anything with it, other than wash it and go... And my regular hair-dying. I've been a red-head for a good couple of years now, people just assume its natural by now. ^^; Who am I to correct them?

I got lucky, as my hair doesn't do anything too crazy. I just pick what ever shampoo and conditioner I think smells the best [And doesn't test on animals, or ones that are eco friendly! :'3]

And wow, some of y'all on here have crazy long hair! I used to have it down to my butt, but that was back when I was so tomboyish I even avoided washing it if I could help it! So, when my friends got tired of my knotted mop, they convinced me to cut it off! It would be interesting to have long hair again...as I actually care about my hair now. ^^;

Cherry Who? 03-14-2012 05:45 PM

I had hair down to (well, parts were past) my butt once too! I had never ever cut it, I had only cut my bangs. I cut it when I was about 13 my mid-back, then tried that ill-fated A-line bob about two years after. Now I keep it just past my shoulders.

jupiter - I use vinegar for cleaning too, but I've never used it on the carpets. What do you do, just rub it in? Our carpets are disgusting.

That's kinda true! When you wear your hair down long, it experiences a lot of wear and tear by rubbing on the backs of chairs or getting caught in stuff. Wearing it up a lot will help to protect the ends.

Just make sure that you change the placement of your ponytail once in a while. If you always put it in the same spot, it'll just cause a lot of stress to the same hair over and over again until it breaks. Switching it up a little higher or lower every day will help prevent that.

LouieRae 03-15-2012 05:53 AM

I just kinda let my hair go for the past eh.. seven years. Always use shampoo, always use conditioner, wash it everyday. Actually thinking of getting it cut though. Maybe when I get my braces off. Make a change even bigger eh. People probably won't be able to recognize me without my cloak of hair. XD

My hair is just naturally strait, thin, and dirty blonde. So all I do is take a shower, wake up,and brush it. Nothing special :/ even when I try to curl it,or something special,it comes un-done in no time.
