Hair! We've almost all got it. Some of us just wash it and go, others spend hours and hundreds of dollars getting it to look just right. Most of us probably fall somewhere in between.

So here's what I want to know! What do you do with your hair? From dyes and cuts to styling products and the "no shampoo" trend, how do you do your 'do? You might also offer some help to someone looking for hair-related advice, recount bad haircut horror stories, discuss hair trends that you aren't personally trying, and anything else you can think of. Let's just talk about these all-important strings growing from our heads!

I've done a lot of stuff to my hair over the years--I have never dyed it a completely different color (don't want to), but I've done highlights.

I've had A-line bobs where it was an inch long in the back, and ten inches long in the front. I've had hair as short as the bottom of my ears--horrible. I've had red streaks, blonde streaks, pin straight, and curly. I've had it be long enough to fall to the middle of my back, and I've done a straight fringe like Jessie J. But right now it just looks like this:

Click on thumbnail for full view <---click

It's shoulder length with a-line bangs, and I absolutely love it.

I have to blow dry and curl my hair every time I take a shower to get it to keep from frizzing out, but that's all I do. I don't have the ability to stand and do my hair for an hour every morning, and I go to cheap (like $8) salons to get it cut, and they've never screwed me up. I don't understand expensive hairstylists except for the fact that they become friends after awhile if you always use them.

Your hair's so pretty, Elsyium!

I once tried for an A-line bob like you described, but instead got something else you mentioned - the super short, just below the ears bob. It looked horrible on me too and I've sworn off Great Clips as a result.

I used to straighten a lot, but then my hair started getting curly instead of just wavy, and I've embraced the curls. Mine don't look nearly as nice and tidy as yours do, though. Probably because I don't curl them, I just let them air dry. I don't have the patience to do my hair every day, and my hair is much too oily to tolerate any product beyond a spritz of hairspray on the crown to tame frizz. I do get some pretty nice curls considering I do nothing to them, though! Sometimes I get ones that are like a perfect little tube you can stick your finger in. That's cool.

I think the lure of expensive hairstylists is the know-how. After my experience with a cheap hairstylist, I'm rather distrustful. You definitely want someone who knows how different types of hair work and will be able to recognize what will and won't work for you, and can suggest things.

Thank you! I used to hate it when I was younger because it was so thick and poofy, but then I learned how to deal with it and I came to be friends with it.

Yeah, I'll tell you what: there's something like a curse on those a-line bobs, because I've sworn them off too due to the fact that no one knows how to do one. They always end up looking like this:

I've had an expensive hairstylist do it for me, and it still ended up FUBAR. >.>

I got onto a binge where I straightened it all the time because I had it done professionally and it looked gorgeous! But I don't have the patience to do it right, so I went back to curling.

I wish my hair would do decent curls naturally, but it's so dry where I live that it doesn't--it has to have some heat applied to it or it pulls a Ronald McDonald.

I always lecture my hairstylists on the tendencies of curly hair, and my hair in general before I let them cut it. :ninja: They've not screwed it up since I started doing that.

I just wash it and go. I don't even condition it half the time. :P

Elsyium - Baha, yes, that's exactly how it comes out.

My straightening ended up wrecking my hair. I used a heat protection cream thing, but it took so much heat to get my hair to be as straight as I wanted that it damaged it anyway. I had to stop or else end up with a bob from breakage.

I hear great things about using honey to help with frizz. My mom has curly hair too, and she just mixes some honey in with her conditioner (and, of course, rinses it out) and it helps her a lot. I tried it too and it worked nicely, but lately I haven't needed it. It also works in protecting against humidity.

Pa-Chinko - Gasp! No conditioner? :o And it doesn't get all dry and frizzy? Or is it not long enough for that to be an issue?

I have to put my straightening iron on its highest heat setting to even have a hope of it straightening the way I like, so it ends up the same way. I'll still straighten it once every couple of months or so, but any more than that and I end up with frail, dry hair.

You know, I'm almost out of conditioner...I'll have to add some honey to this last bit of it and see what it does. I live in Colorado, and it's pretty much a desert with grass on the eastern plains, so it's dry as hell. I have yet to meet a conditioner that can compete with our dry air.

my hair is pretty much just a bob, so its really short in the back but its long in the front, here's a fairly recent photo of my hair:

the red has washed out now though, I usually just wash my hair everyday, brush it and go XD

I wash it about 5 out of 7 days a week, and I let it air-dry. I don't use mousses or anything afterwards, but I would if I had a proper hairstyle!

I use quite a bit of conditioner, because my hair is thick and dry, I couldn't go without it unlike you, Pa-chinko!

I really need advice on my hair, I have hated it for years but nothing seems to help. It's longish, with layers, that are too short now to make it better. I used to have a full fringe, but it grew out and now I have really long side pieces which really doesn't suit me! I need a style that I can get it cut like, with smaller pieces around the face, but not so many that i have hair on my face constantly! I also have a small forehead and so my hair falls forward.

I have hair akin to a symbiotic life form. It grows, keeps me warm, there's little i can do to it. I used to try and flatten it down when it made me a prime target for harsh words in secondary school, but since the age of about 15 i haven't bothered with that.

I generally just wash it ever other day or so, and let it do whatever it likes. I find that the texture and lightness of it means that most attempts at styling are pointless, as it only keeps any sign of form when i'm inside.

My hair's getting pretty long, at least for me. I haven't cut it in like four months and least time I cut it I shaved it all off. It's about three inches long now. I used to keep my hair shoulder length but for about two years now I've been either bald or I've kept it pretty much shaved. I love it sort because my hair is thick and a pain to brush when it's long.

Currently, all I do to my hair is wash it three times a week and condition it once a week to keep my skin from drying out. I throw a little hair spray in it and spike it when I go out. It's really easy to upkeep since I don't really have to do much. I dye my hair red too. I can't stand my natural hair colour.

Oh my god, that no shampoo trend! My boyfriend is a week into his no poo and it's kind of gross. ): I'm making him shower at least twice a day. I'd like to see what he looks like in a few weeks. Hopefully it works and he's super sexy and soft.

For me, I condition every other day, and then shampoo every other shower. But I have gel for those real gross days too. I usually wear it in a bun at work, but the weekend I have it down and need to put this leave-in-conditioner. (I realized after typing this, that it sounds complicated. It's really not.)

I also recently learned to french braid :D
I usually don't brush my hair, but since I want to have braids, I need to comb it. Which sucks.

ElysiumFate - I really like Pantene's Medium-Thick Frizzy to Straight conditioner. Copious amounts of that with some honey mixed in might help you out. Oh, and with the honey, you're going to want to mix it in your palm rather than try to put it straight in the conditioner bottle. I'm not sure how well it would mix in the bottle.

Tegan_StarFire - Your bob's so cute! Looks like you've got just the right hair type for it. A little wavy so it looks natural, but not so much that it becomes a mess like mine did.

Lunanuova - Hmm, I'm not sure what to suggest. Personally, I've been considering asymmetrical sideswept bangs like so but haven't mustered up the courage to try it. Maybe it would work for you?

Sun - Aww, sorry your hair's hard to tame! Maybe you need a better conditioner?

Mystic - Just out of curiousity, do you dye your hair a naturalish shade of red or just red?

The Real Nikki - "no poo" Sorry, I'm immature. Anyway, blech, I could never do that. I'm really anal about personal hygiene and I have a super oily scalp. I've got to wash and condition my hair every single day. x_x I hope your boyfriend's hair thing works out nicely... or that he takes some shampoo to it if it doesn't.

I generally do like Pa-chinko, just wash it and go. It's really humid where I live, so frizz isn't too much of an issue for me. I have that just below the ears cut that you guys were cursing further up, but it works for me because of my curls. I don't think I have a photo though.

Right now my hair is pretty blahhhh.

My hair is blonde and straight. My hair itself is pretty thin and dry but I have really dense follicles so hairdressers are often taken aback by how much work they have to do xD

I wash my hair maybe every other day or so, and I condition it every time I wash. The water here is really hard and the air is really dry so my hair has turned extremely brittle.

I used to dye my hair a really dark reddish-purple. I loved it but I hated keeping up with it.

Here's how it looked about a year into trying to grow the dye out:

(I don't normally curl my hair... it has a hard time keeping put when I do anything to style it xD)

----------

Ah, here's a photo of what the color started out as.

----------

This is the most recent one I have where you can see all of my hair. It was taken last August and I haven't had it cut since then, so it's just a bit longer now.

I don't actually rock the bob very well. I was much happier with longer hair, so I'm trying to grow it back to the length it was about a year ago, which was just past my boobs.

I tend to stick towards more natural colours. I love dark reds, although right now my hair is more of an ginger red.

Carzee - It's great the cut works for you! There are some lucky people who look cute in it. My hair just wouldn't have any of it and decided to look really silly. I got this wave right at the bottom of it, so it sort of curled forward into my face and was just... a very awkward cut.

Keyori - Is your color completely natural in that last picture? If so, I'm insanely jealous of your natural highlights. If not, well, it still looks nice. :)

Mystic - I dye my hair a natural red sometimes too. :) It's such a hard color to keep up with, though, and it never comes out quite the way I want it. It looks nice on the box, way too intense on my head, then a month later it's all but gone.

I wash my hair every... (not to be disgusting) 3-7 days. I just hate having to flat iron it! I have naturally curly hair and it takes forever to straighten.
My hair is about shoulder length and my bangs are half way down my face basically.
I dye my hair every few months. It is black at the moment =3

Mystic - Oh, I could never go to another color either. I've considered a light brown before, but it's just not me. But right now I'm just letting my natural color come through. It's sort of a strawberry blonde, so it's got enough red that I don't feel weird. It's not as pretty of a color as I'd like to have, though. My current dream color is a sort of reddish honey, sort of like my avatar's. Something soft. The last time I tried to dye my hair red, I picked a pretty dark ginger color and I came out looking like Ronald McDonald. :gonk: Nearly burst into tears every time I looked in the mirror, it was awful.

Elysium - I hope it helps!

DaisyKeehl - Ahh, wanting the opposite of your natural hair can be a pain. Have you tried getting the curls to work for your personal style? If it's possible, it makes things so much easier. I love that I no longer have to fight my hair.

Get some sun! That's usually what gives mine the highlights it has. If I don't go outside as often the color gets a bit darker and almost looks grayish.

If just sun isn't enough, you can try using Sun-in too. My dad uses it to lighten his hair and it works pretty well. It works best if you wet your hair first (like if you're at a pool or something).

I've used it before but not recently. I didn't really notice much of a difference but I only tried it once, and my dad uses it several times throughout the summer to get it really light. It doesn't really damage our hair type either, which is nice since there's so many awful products designed for lightening. (Ewww peroxide and bleach)
