I hated health class cause it was only available during the summer. ):<

For some reason I sat through about five health classes during my public school career, so trust me I get where you're coming from. I of course chose to go into a healthcare type field so I've sat through many more, now. [lol]

I really enjoyed my Health class because my teacher wasn't shy about saying things and would be very serious discussing sex ed. He was a very kind hearted man yet macho manly since he also doubled as the PE teacher.
I remember he showed us this film which dealt with teen pregnancy and peer pressure in sex (something along those lines). There was a part where the guy in the film was forcing himself on the girl, and girl was telling him "No, No!" and finally shoved him off. And I just remember Coach Johnson (that's what we called him) yelled "YEAH!" I just loved him. |
I went to a Catholic elementary school, so grades 5,6,7 and 8 were full of "These are the changes in your body""say no to sex""contraceptives are the devil""This is how a baby is made and born-using drawn images" for health class
It wasn't until I went to a public highschool that in grade 9 I actually learned facts about sex-ed. Proper info on contraceptives, peer pressure, the real way babies are made and born. yeah health classes are a little weird... I really hated the fact that I started maturing before my 1st health class. Nothing like having your first period, and learning that according to school you matured a year early. |

When I was a kid we only had 2 sex ed classes one in 6th grade and one in 8th. We had a health survival class in 12th grade. I think things were changed by 12th grade because they actually had whole year long health classes for each grade by the time I graduated. We didn't learn much in our classes because the teachers were way to shy to talk about anything but condoms and saying no to sex.... >.> Thankfully I was never pleasant to look at so no guys wanted me. Thus I never had to worry about sex ed.

I never minded health class. That might be because I always had pretty good teachers, though. My schools didn't buy that "abstinence only" thing. They actually went in depth about reproductive health.
My middle school didn't have a year-long health class. They set aside a week for sex-ed classes, though. The school nurse and guidance counselor came in and talked about the changes in out bodies, sex, contraceptives, ect. (We had a separate set of guidance classes that dealt with things like peer pressure and what-not). Neither of them were really shy, so they had no problem going in depth. or being dorks. I remember on the day they talked about STD's, they started playing "As Long as You Love Me" and sang along. Specifically, the "I don't care what you did" lines. Because apparently you should, since they might have an STD. XD My high school teacher was really goo, too. We had the whole year-long class this time, so it was more in depth. She brought in examples of as many contraceptives as she could (and was allowed, so no pills and whatnot). She even showed us how to put on a condom using a banana. She also brought in "beer goggles" for us to try on during the drugs/alcohol unit. It was a pretty good class, but maybe I just lucked out with my teachers. |
I never really had any. When i was in Year 5 i had a talk about 'this is what's going to happen to you' sort of thing, and the exact same talk in Year 6. I wasn't receptive, as i hated the idea of being a girl at that point in life. I only had one other very brief and uninformative talk in Year 9. Most of what i know i learn't independently.
So bad it's shocking, thinking about it now. |
"Health class" is another name for sex education, right? *non-American girl rolling around*
We had a week of sex ed at age 10-11 and one at age 15-16. This is what I remember from the first course: - A slide-projector presentation of detailed drawings of the human reproductive organs, accompanied by an awkward explanation from our teacher. - Said teacher asking the class if anyone knew another word for "penis". Kids raised their hands to say "pee-wee" etc. I raised my hand, said "dick" and all but got sent out of the classroom for being indecent. - Another kid's mom was a dentist. After the presentation on pregnancy and giving birth, he told all the girls in our classroom how many female patients come into her practice because they bit their teeth so hard their molars cracked in half while giving birth. Needless to say, the teacher was horrified and the girls were all grossed out. I should probably add that this was a Catholic school with very strict uniforms and prayers at the start of the day and before lunch. Here's what I remember from the age 15-16 class: - Focus on birth control (other class groups unrolled condoms over broomsticks, we didn't have broomsticks so we didn't) and explanations of STDs and how to avoid them. The video we saw on STDs even explained that putting fingers with long nails into a vagina is unhealthy because of the filth that might be under the nails. One guy didn't believe the video because "lots of porn stars have long nails". - Pregnancy and giving birth, as told by a less awkward and more friendly teacher. |
Yanno. I was reading through this thread and formulating a serious answer.
