I don't drive but I need to since I don't live in a big city. Of course I noticed having a car is a big hassle with getting the license, getting the car, money gas and money on insurance. Is it really worth it at all?

If you don't live in a place that has a good bus system or all your necessities are within walking distance, then yes, yes it is worth it.
If the bus came to my town, I would be taking it, but the farthest it goes is still a drive away.

Owning a car is an expense and not one that I like dealing with either, but it's a necessary for me to have one.

For me - Oh god yes, I wouldn't be able to do anything without a car.

There's a lot of freedom that comes along with driving. If you're limited by public transport or having to bum rides off other people, you end up missing out on a lot of fun/practical things. Like maybe you feel like going to the movies but can't find anyone to go with, or you ran out of milk but haven't scheduled a shopping trip for that day. If you have a car, it's easy to just jump into the driver's seat and take care of any errands or fun little activities that came to mind. Otherwise you're just stuck sitting at home and wishing that you had something else to do.

For me, it's very worth it. It's a pain at first, especially in terms of getting your license and actually buying the car, but things get easier after that. Maintenance isn't so bad and paying for gas is something that you (kind of) get used to after a while. If you can afford it, then I'd go for it.

I've been driving for seven or so years now and I still find driving to be fun despite the fact that driving is something I have to do. If you think driving is fun then it's definitely worth it. On the other hand, if you live in the country or in places where there is no public transport then it is also worth it.

I have never had the opportunity to use public transport and am so used to not having to be controlled by bus or train schedules that I think I would have trouble getting used to using them now anyway. Driving is a huge freedom. Buying your own car is one of the biggest freedoms you'll ever get beyond moving out of your parent's house. Once you have the ability to get up and go wherever the hell you want to go, WHEN you want to, you'll probably never complain about car expenses again. Unless..of course, your car totally busts and you have to spend a lot of money fixing it. Nobody doesn't complain about that. Even that expense is worth it once you're used to the freedom of having a car, imo.

I need a car because I have a child.
I used to take the bus or walk everywhere, but then I got pregnant.
It was necessary.
But I got into my first car accident a week ago, it wasn't my fault, but the cop blamed me.
Talk about headache.

I had a clean driving record for five years.

I'd rather go back to to bus.

I don't drive, but I'm planning to soon! I'd say driving and having your own car is really efficient. For now my mum drives me everywhere, and I've never got on public transport, unless it is for school trips or something, and I'm not planning to either. For one thing, I hate public transport, getting squashed and being uncomfortable. I'd rather have my own car But if you're thinking about pollution and saving the planet and toxic fumes, you better go on public transport =)

I never learnt to drive, could never afford to, and I manage ok without a car, but then I live right in the middle of town so shops etc. are within walking distance. I wish I could drive, but on the other hand there's nowhere to park here, and I'd not be about to afford the tax/insurance.

For people who live in the US the greater distances are going to mean way more people need a car, but I wonder...

Maybe people get just a bit too used to jumping in the car and use it needlessly, when for some chores they really could have just walked.

I didn't get my license until I was 20! I had an anxiety though. I could not drive without having a panic attack. Anyway, I realized that I Had to drive if I wanted to go to college 30 minutes away or go anywhere really. I don't live in a big city and we don't have many buses. Now, I have a 3 year old and driving is a Must! lol. I have to drive him to appointments, to the babysitter's, and soon it will be daycare, then school, etc. And especially if I have an emergency. I definitely think driving is worth it if you do not live in an area where taxis, buses, etc are readily available and/or you want to have a family one day. Of course, a big factor is where you live.

Jelly - yes, I understand. We drive when we don't really need to too, like for the super market that is just around a 5-10 minutes walk. But rather than walking, I'd prefer going in the car, because of many security problems we have here, like stealing and stuff. It is not much, I assure you, but a bit terrifying all the same. And being women, it is best if we take a car than walk. It is much safer ^_^ (and you might say that men and women are all the same according to law, but sadly, it is not so in our place.)

Um.... Yes it is worth it. If you ever have a job that's far away and there's no other way to get you there.. GET A CAR! In the big city you have ALOT of transportation. But if you live in a small area and things are far away it is worth getting a car. Instead of walking or relying on people to give you rides.

I happen to live in a city with a decent bus system which has served me well for years now but still I say driving is worth it. The bus system limits your options when job hunting and can make simple needs difficult or impossible.

Such as say making a quick stop at the store for milk or other items which need refrigeration when the store is walkable but still two streets down. Two streets is pretty far for refrigeratables especially on a hot summer day, or to carry bundles of items at all really. This has never been much of a problem for me but there are times when I become disgruntled by these obstacles when I really would have liked to pick something up while my mom is away.
Or lets say I'm craving a frosty at Wendy's. There isn't a bus that stops near a Wendy's that I know of and even if there were it's a little more than two streets down...just for a frosty?

The bus system can also be unreliable as busses can be late or even no shows. This has caused slight problems for me before.

Then there is the biggest obstacle. In june we're moving to the old house where my grandparents used to live, the closest area to that house with bus stops, a grocery store and restaurants is a 15 minute walk. That's gonna make getting to campus for my classes without a ride from my mother very difficult and tedious if not impossible and she has a work schedule.

Trust me when I tell you not to underestimate the power of driving.
I really need to finish that damn handbook now that winter quarter is over so I can get another damn permit.
