I think it's more a matter of increased media coverage on shootings and the like rather than a significantly larger number of shootings... that could be a good thing of a bad thing since it isn't unheard of for crazy people to go on shooting sprees just for... attention. x_x

In the news and PR world we like to say, "If it bleeds, it leads." What draws your attention more? 10 DEAD IN FL SHOOTING or Fish on sale this week. Media have to cover things that they think people want to hear.

I don't want to hear about this though.
But conversely, I'm fully aware that if the news focused on good/happy things, viewing numbers would drop...
I think the issue for me is how the media as a whole sensationalises disaster of all kinds.

I tend to focus more on local news particularly if it's related to weather because most of the sensationalized material is not something I can do much about. I can acknowledge it and move on. Prepare if necessary, but I've been there and done that long enough to be a bit jaded.
Shootings - in the US at least - seem to happen cyclically. The spin from the media, however, is far more interesting to see. I've frankly given up wondering why it happens and wonder more about what really did happen. Yes, I do wear a tinfoil hat during those moments.

The media focuses more on the bad than the good. They do have some good things but most of the reports are about shootings in the area and things like that. I get that the world has bad in it but there are also good people out there too. My family watches the news whenever it comes on so they're constantly worried and overprotective of me.

We often watch a news station that has a lot of human interest stories. I mainly watch to check the weather to figure out how to advise the kids to dress for the day.
Yes, as a parent the news makes me squirm and want to enter a bunker with my kids. However, there are a lot of good stories out there.

They tend to put the nice, human interest story at the end of the news, as some "light relief" though, don't they. : /
News:
Shootings
Fires
Plane crashes
Robberies
Financial disasters
Political chicanery, etc. etc.
But oh hey, here's some pensioner's cat doing something cute...

LOL! I notice that more later in the day. The morning show we watch has at least 2 early in the hour. They featured a couple of kids who were dealing with health challenges and their station hosted very touching events to raise awareness for the kids. I tend to tune out much of the rest of it. I mean, all I have to do is peek in on facebook...

They don't even sensationalize the stuff that it would do good to get attention to. Injustices get 0 attention. All people want is to be scared of ebil people, not actually learn about what's going on in the world. Woman gets huge prison sentence for shooting her husband who was trying to kill her? Fuck off, I wanna hear more about a gas station robbery. Like I can make any change after learning about that.
