Juh-juh-jaaay Walking

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jELsGNndmI...00/jaywalk.jpg
Come on, I totally know you guys do it.
Considered one of those ordinance laws, it's typically up to your own city/town/village to set a punishment for this kind of crime.

How do you feel when you jaywalk, if you jaywalk?
Do you wait for the light to turn colour/a hand before crossing?

Cherry Who? 08-11-2014 10:22 PM

The only place I really do much crossing the street is in the heart of the city. And yeah, if I try to jaywalk there I'd get run over. [lol]

Yamka Jaden 08-12-2014 01:51 AM

'Course I jaywalk, I do it almost every time I go across the street to my neighbors. :P Or if I just wanna go grab something at the sub shop across from work and don't wanna wait at the crosswalk. Doesn't really matter to me much, almost everyone does it.

Antagonist 08-12-2014 03:41 AM

Where I live, it's pretty normal to jaywalk since a lot of places there aren't actual places for you to cross a street as a pedestrian. [XD] Though of course for the bigger streets I wait at the light like everyone else unless you want to risk getting run over.

Due to our really biased laws here, a lot of people don't care because if they're hit by a car, whether or not they were jaywalking, the law will usually side with the pedestrian because the driver 'wasn't paying enough attention to the road', and they figured that it isn't a big deal because they'd get compensation in a lawsuit from the driver later on for their hospital bills anyway. [roll]

PapillonCameo 08-12-2014 03:45 AM

Well I wouldn't do it in a big city, but since I'm staying in a small town with places where there aren't crosswalks .. Well I do it all the time.

The Wandering Poet 08-12-2014 03:56 AM

I call them roadkill... they walk across the busiest highway road in the entire city like it's a crosswalk

jupiter 08-13-2014 02:10 AM

@Antagonist:
I think that's fairly typical of most cities; pedestrians have the right of way regardless of whether or not there's a crosswalk. Of course, obstructing the flow of traffic has its own consequences.

@Yamka:
I knew it! hahaha
I will do it sometimes, and other times--like when the local mayor instilled a $75 fee for being caught jaywalking downtown--I'll try to stick to a corner. There are a couple of neighborhoods where some streets allow for a car to drive through without a stop, and they have a habit of speeding up when they see a pedestrian. My friend said she almost had a heart attack a couple of times because I'll walk right out in front of them with this THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE HIGHLANDER attitude.

linapoo 08-13-2014 03:06 PM

Yeahh I jaywalk allll the time
but so does the other 5000 students on campus at the time LOL

i think it's gotten so bad to where some students dont even look when they cross the street OTL
i always look D8 it's just a habit.

VeraDark 08-13-2014 09:12 PM

I almost got hit by a taxicab once, and practically had to vault over it to keep from being smashed.

But I had the green light, so I guess that doesn't count as jaywalking...

Never been run down for jaywalking, I just make damned sure to look both ways. Now, I even do it when I've got the light, lol.

Lexadis 08-19-2014 06:22 PM

There's only one place in our entire city where there's a traffic light [XP] And as Ant said, it's the driver's fault all the time, pedestrians aren't blamed. So it's very common around here. Mad pedestrians, mad drivers, all mad people!
I usually just jump on the road behind a few guys who jump on the road in front of me >_<

jellysundae 08-20-2014 01:56 AM

There's no law like this in the UK, busy roads have crossings (if you're lucky) but there's no fines if you don't use them. There's 2 different kinds of crossings - pelican and zebra - pelican crossings have traffic lights to stop the traffic, zebra crossings rely on the decency of car drivers to stop and let people they see waiting cross.

There is a law that drivers must stop if a pedestrian is already using the crossing, but I can assest, from personal experience, that some drivers are ignorant arseholes and will drive straight across the crossing even if they were 50 metres up the road when you started crossing, and had plenty of time to see you and slow down. Some dick almost drove over my toes one day, they were that close to me when they sailed over the crossing that I was already a quarter of the way over. [evil]

Here's a bit from the Government enforced Highway Code.

Quote:

Zebra crossings.

As you approach a zebra crossing
  • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
  • allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
  • do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

I remember when i was a little kiddie and first started using the internet, i came across the term 'jaywalking'. I had no idea what it actually meant. When i did find out some time later, i was baffled, like really baffled, that there are places where you can get into trouble for just crossing a road.

One of the reasons i'd hate to live in the US is because of the whole jaywalking thing. I really don't like having to make cars stop for me to cross the road, and i always worry about them just purposefully hitting me. I avoid crossings 99% of the time.

As a driver the one think that really irritates me is when there's no cars on the road, and i'm a good distance away from a crossing and somebody still insists on pressing the stop button on those crossings that have them. Sods law that the lights always change to red just as i get there, and they don't change back for a few minutes.

zigbigadorlube 08-20-2014 08:58 PM

Pft. I live in NYC. I don't think it's possible to ever cross the street WITHOUT jaywalking. >.>

jellysundae 08-21-2014 01:12 PM

Lol Sun: people stopping the traffic for no reason like that drives me nuts, and I don't drive! I'll always cross without holding people up if I can. I hate using zebra crossings because I'm forcing people to stop for me, I always make a point of giving the driver a smile and saying thank you to them to let them know I appreciate them stopping. I think it's really ignorant when pedestrians don't ackowledge the drivers who have stopped for them. : /

My mind was blown by the whole jaywalking thing too, exactly the same reaction as you. [lol]

So I wonder, Americans who've visited the US, did it freak you out crossing a road? Did you do it just because you could? Did it give you a heady sense of freedom!?

Visit the UK, YOU CAN CROSS THE ROADS!! [lol]

The Wandering Poet 08-21-2014 06:06 PM

Jelly, in some places so I'm told this is how you cross the street

jellysundae 08-21-2014 06:16 PM

That reminds me of trying to cross the road in Lincoln [gonk] Multilane roads frighten me. [oops]

The Wandering Poet 08-21-2014 07:09 PM

I see people doing that here all the time on the busiest road...

Even saw some guy cussing and swearing at cars as he weaved in and out of traffic while walking his bike. He almost got clipped at least 3 or 4 times that I saw

iBunniee 08-22-2014 06:23 AM

We don't really have like street names and such in my hometown. Geez, when we want we'll sit in the back of a pick-up truck for a cruise, I seen VERY young children driving snowmobiles and quads around town a lot. But some of those people who own those kind of vehicles who let their young children drive, had them confiscated, don't know how long or the conditions to get them back. n n;

Uniplex 08-22-2014 05:14 PM

I jaywalk a lot in my hometown. Lol one time I did that, and the police officer that was actually on duty standing there (security at a festival in my town) asks "Do you do that a lot?", to which I replied honestly and told him I did. He goes "Well, don't get hit by a car and we'll call it even."
So... Here it's not a big deal at all. But when I went to a big city for a convention recently, jaywalking didn't even come into my mind. Those people were nutzo! I'd be dead right now if I even tried to.

VeraDark 08-23-2014 07:53 AM

Here, we just try to cross when we see a chance.

Some people will run a red light just to be speed-racers, and swerve around people at the crossing. I hate that.

Some will stop at a green light if nobody's behind them, and let you cross even if they were legally entitled to keep going. It's a little silly sometimes, but manners like that are to be applauded.

A lot of intersections don't have lights, and you're sort of on your own. I've had to wait ten minutes or more to cross when there's traffic, and then I've had a single car slow to a halt to let me cross in front of them. That's actually sort of annoying, I mean, they could have gone on and let me cross after, because walking in front of cars is scary, but I know they mean well.

Sometimes we both hesitate, start to go, stop again, and it's really frustrating, but sort of funny.

Anyone lets me cross, even if they legally had to, I always smile and wave a thank-you. I figure it's always good to be polite to people who could have killed me and kept going if they had really wanted to.

The Wandering Poet 08-23-2014 11:29 PM

Vera that's the very reason I run across even on a crosswalk
