Top Ramen is Gross

Shin Ramen is the best.
(Namja ramen being a good second ;))

Educate me then, Lina, is "Top" the brand then? I only know about Ramen from seeing people talk about it on here, and watching a video of Hayao Miyazaki cooking some for his studio staff ><

Alexander J Luthor 09-29-2014 01:25 PM

My favorite is the mix I've made. Wheat noodles, fish sauce, Worcestershire sauce, sriracha garlic paste, diced onion, and chicken broth.

jellysundae 09-29-2014 01:27 PM

That's using ordinary dried noodles though, not ones that come with a packet of nasty seasoning and dried floor sweepings vegetables?

Alexander J Luthor 09-29-2014 01:30 PM

Well, to be fair I do cheat. I use the noodles from those packets and toss out the seasoning. The only noodles the closest store to me has are rice noodles, which is like chewing snot.

jellysundae 09-29-2014 01:34 PM

You have a bit of a mucus obsession today. [ninja]

Alexander J Luthor 09-29-2014 01:39 PM

Fufufufu, it may be that I'm going through that nasal thing right now. I hope it's not the beginning of something bad. Ugh. I hate getting sick because I usually have nothing that can help stop it. Well, I do have some DayQuil, but I save that for the thick of it. No need to waste cold medicine if it turns out to be something else.

jellysundae 09-29-2014 01:56 PM

I recommend ginger. Ginger and garlic! But a ginger supplement is good for keeping colds at bay, it's just finding ginger in capsule form xD I have some with is powder inside a capsule shell, I take a couple of those 30 minutes before a car journey, because another of ginger's skills is quelling nausea, of course. :D It's a good miltitasker. [yes]

linapoo 09-29-2014 02:33 PM

Well, Top is the name of it, and Nissin is the brand, I think. Japanese brands are sub par instant ramen (ironically). Better off with eating the real one. In my opinion anyway.

There are other kinds of ramen too! From different countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand... Not sure if I'd call them all 'ramen' but they are noodles...I tend to stick with Korean brands. :3c

But, if you have a local Asian market, you should definitely go to one and try some different ramen out! They will be labeled with a English ingredients list so you can see what's in what there. 8D Some older versions of ramen may still have MSG in it though. I tend to think Taiwan and Korea has the best ramen. Not as salty or full of MSG as others.

XD Oh really? Haha, I kind of find that cute to picture...Miyazaki cooking ramen. uvu <3

Yess Alexander, I don't understand when people just eat the ramen and base by itself if they can help it XD I need to customize my ramen.
Oooh you just make your own broth! nice. I can't do that. Too laze. XD Yours sounds nice! I like to just stick with the packet and add eggs, green onions and any type of spicy peppers. (Either jalapenos or bird chili)

Mmm I'm so hungry now XD

Alexander J Luthor 09-29-2014 02:56 PM

My favorites are that one, chicken stock ramen with scrambled eggs and green onions, and "fancy ramen" with noodles, broth, soy sauce, boiled egg slices, strips of baked chicken or pork slices, green onions, carrot shreds, minced garlic, and diced onions. I make this once in a blue moon 'cause I'm so damn lazy.

Edit: There are some ramen that I still eat with the packet. There's a blue ramen with anime characters on it, I'm having trouble finding a picture (might just have to take one the next time I buy it) but I could only use a fraction of the packet on my noodles, so I saved it and added some to chili. That stuff burned like no tomorrow, but it was one of the most delicious thing's I have ever eaten.

~LONGCAT~ 09-29-2014 03:23 PM

I think top is what I have in our cabinets... I like to add chicken bits and cheese to mine.

Alexander J Luthor 09-29-2014 03:41 PM

I only recently heard of cheese ramen when I saw an episode of Celebrities React from The Fine Bros where there was a strange commercial for pepper and cheese flavored ramen.

~LONGCAT~ 09-29-2014 03:45 PM

It comes in cheese flavor... I do t know if I'd like that. I like the melty stringy bits of cheddar cheese on the noodles.

=3

Alexander J Luthor 09-29-2014 03:48 PM

It can't be bad if I like cheesy rice. How do you make yours?

There are only a few types sold where I live.
Nissin and Maruchan are the top two.
My favourite is this one:

That video made me feel so warm and happy!

I love instant ramen, I always have. It is one of my special comfort foods. I try not to buy it too much though, cause I get lazy about my food if there is too much convenience stuff in my cupboard.

The main brands available in my area are Top Ramen and Maruchan. I did some taste tests between them a little while ago and found them to be essentially identical, so I just buy the cheaper one, which is Maruchan.

I like to spice up my ramen with extras, and call is Ramen+. (Way before google+ happened.) My default additions are sliced mushrooms and green onions, with a dash of sesame oil. I experimented with adding seaweed earlier this year with mixed results. Sometimes my ramen developed this really thick slime—it didn't taste bad but slime is never a good texture in your soup. [gonk] I couldn't figure out what exactly was causing it, if it was the seaweed itself, or the seaweed in combination with something else.

FFFFF- THAT FIRST ONE!! That's it! Take that spicy bad boy, pop it into chili, add extra tomatoes to fight the heat, and you've got instant deliciousness.

Kenome-Chan 09-30-2014 06:47 AM

My stomach started growling as I was reading all this.
One day can you all feed me your yummy ramen?

Alexander J Luthor 09-30-2014 06:48 AM

I dunno. Apparently mine suck sometimes because, despite my hatred of rice noodles, I'll cook wheat noodles until they're darn near transparent sometimes.

Kenome-Chan 09-30-2014 06:51 AM

I don't think I've ever had wheat noodles.
I tend to stay away from wheat things because I can taste the wheat in it.
It's so bitter..

Alexander J Luthor 09-30-2014 06:52 AM

Do you have an allergy, or is it just not your thing?

Kenome-Chan 09-30-2014 06:55 AM

I think it's just not my thing.
But my rule is to try something once so I'd be up to trying wheat noodles.

Alexander J Luthor 09-30-2014 06:57 AM

If you season them right, they're amazing.
