Any picture that reminds me of Howdy is generally a lot scarier than LONGSNEKCAT
I wonder if I can find the Alice picture...I've not read that book in about 25 years, so I can't remember what part of the story it's in

Ah! I'm so glad I'm not the only one! My book also had an illustration of her holding that ugly pig baby, and that one freaked me out too. I really need to run upstairs and dig out my book so I can snap some pictures of the illustrations (or, better yet, look at who the illustrator was. Because I remember using that information before to find the illustrations on his website, and that's so much better than a phone pic) to show you guys.
I actually remember having more than one beloved storybook like that as a kid... Where some of the pictures were very disturbing to me, bordering on scary in a grotesque way, yet I still found myself morbidly fascinated by them. Staring for ages even though it scared me. Anyone else have that as a kid?

I think I've always been fascinated by those creepy grotesque things as a kid, so I've looked at quite a few and became mostly desensitized. Captain Howdy's signature still creeps me out though.

Yes, definitely. I can't remember what the scares were now, but I know I did that.

Morbid curiosity? I'd stare at something that creeps me out for loooong moments as long as I know that it won't make any sudden movements.

I think I'm still that way a bit! I'm not terribly into horror movies because I don't like jump scares and have a bit of an anxiety disorder, but I looooove looking at pictures of creepy monsters (artwork, makeup/costumes, from movies or games, whatever). The more grotesque, the better! But just watching someone else play a scary game has me flailing and covering my head like a nerd. I do it anyway... but still!

Same! I hate playing horror video games and I've lost my liking for horror films once I got the gist that they're pretty much just using sudden loud noises to get you to jump and the actual scenes aren't that scary at all. Pictures of roadkill, people who were decapitated, that sort of thing though...If I come across them I'd pause and just stare at them for a bit before moving on.

What do you mean by real gore? Like, bits of dead stuff, or movie-makeup stuff for live action movies?

By real, I meant what antagonist was talking about: Road kill and actual victims of accidents. As in, nothing fictitious.

Yeah, those tend to disturb me a lot more than the fake movie stuff. Though sometimes it's kind of hard to tell when it's just a picture and no explanations given...like I don't know if it's actually something that people took a picture of that happened, or if it was a screenshot from a film somewhere.

A lot of people have trouble telling between good makeup and the real thing. There's a picture circulating of the "bruises left by a lightning strike" that's actually makeup.

Yeah. Gotta love zombie makeup too, it's amazing how they could make the person look like they're actually missing pieces of themselves when they're not!

Yeah! There's a makeup-artistry school in my city and every year for Armageddon expo they make a whoooole ton of zombies of people attending. It's great.
