So Linnea:'s Renaissance fare avatar got me thinking how cool it would be to go, because I've never been. I came down to Charlotte yesterday and my uncle, unbeknownst to him that I've been wanting to go said there is a fare tomorrow and if we wanted to go we could! I'm so excited!!!
So has anyone else been to a renaissance fare and what should I expect to see?

Costumes... costumes of all periods and qualities... and sizes.
I'm not TOO far away from the Texas Renaissance Festival grounds so we go on those years where we're not as sheepish about traffic--- something you should also expect--- but beyond that it's a great deal of fun.
Turkey legs are usually on sale but I'd suggest getting something else since walking and navigating all the little bones and tough bits is... well it's tricky. Then again walking and chewing gum is difficult for me so who knows?
There will be a bit of raunchiness around the 'taverns' too. One of my old school friends was the niece/daughter of "Iris and Rose". I know they perform at different state festivals but I'm not sure if they get out to yours. Hopefully so-- they're pretty funny.
Beyond that there is bound to be a lot of vendors. For whatever reason we have a lot of steampunk costume vendors at the TRF.... but like I said there will be things from all different periods so I guess it's just providing costume bits and bobs for them? : )

Demonstrations. Things like Blacksmithing. Games for kids (padded sword fighting, that sort of thing.) Jousting! The jousting is like, the best part!

Okay. This is going to be fun... I wish I brought my camera. I could take amazing photos... Oh wait, I think my old phone is in my car so I'll look and see if it's there.
I'm not much on turkey legs or chicken legs for that same reason.
Oh I cannot wait. I'm so excited.

oh heeey! i'm glad you are inspired to do something fun and new!
my favorite part was all the people in period outfits i also love the shops and trying on the steel boned corsets that i can't always afford as my avatar shows, i love me a good turkey leg, even if it tastes like ham and i also love that often times you'll see cosplayers doing characters from doctor who and anime... which doesn't fit in that period, but it's still fun to see!
friends of mine also bring ale mugs and you can get mead or ale filled like you're at a 7/11! it's also cool watching the royal court and there is usually a whole play, so to speak, including a joust or sword fight. there's lots of belly dancers and knife throwers and all kinds of little acts. you usually can get a mappy thing that will show where each event is taking place and the times. the one i went to last year had a couple tigers and babies! they were so cute!!
i hope you have a great time!!!

If you can get a Scotch egg, do it! I highly recommend them.
I got my certification years ago, and have worked a few faires, mostly in winter. Our local one has a team of fighters even, like in real armor, and using non-padded weapons.
Jousting is awesome, there's always vendors out the wazz (but beware, many, like at cons, sell shoddy, overpriced crap), and even the occasional wandering minstrel. I got to wear funny clothes, run around speaking like a foreigner, and eat unidentified meat on a stick, which really isn't all that different than my everyday life, but it was still loads of fun.

We can talk about Renaissance foid if you would like. I personally have no recipes to share but eould love yo hear some
Well, we were talking this morning and my grandmother reminded me i had been to a Renaissance "festivities" in Monaco. It was not like a renaissance fair, but they had a parade and everyine was dressed up. They had little "stations" where they had people turning wool into yarn and stuff. It was realy nice, but this is going to be a fun and exciting experience. I'll be sure to post photos later. :)

I've been to a smaller faire that was sort of like that. It was in a little park, and they set it up like a circle of vendors and displays, and activities happened in the middle. I think it was in either Mississippi, or Tennesee.
It was actually really cool, because they put a lot more authenticity into it, and they even did a demonstration of several kinds of dances and such, the sort of thing we never really get to see at our bigger, more commercially watered-down faire here. Most of ours is people selling things and crew and cast waiting for the cannon to go off at the end of the day so they can go smoke pot in the labyrinth maze, and get drunk in tent city.
I thought it was awesome how much the smaller doings kept to the real deal. Felt a lot more like being there, you know?

I started as a "playtron," sort of a patron who wants to be a part of it all instead of just a visitor. People thought I was part of the cast, and the cast ended up recruiting me because of it.
I guess it helps if you can speak with the right accents and everything.
I just don't like zipper nazis. The people who go around and criticize everyone for not being authentic enough, while at the same time all of their outfits are made of polyester and bought online. Those people are butts.
Having lots of money doesn't make you better than anyone else, it just means you get to criticize people a lot, I guess.
I loved the faires, though, they were a lot of fun, and the first time I was invited to stay over after the place closed for the night was one of the coolest things that ever happened to me. We all hung out at the tavern and sang songs and stuff, it was really fun!

So I did have fun! It was very interesting and I enjoyed myself... I think I would have enjoyed myself if some of the circumstances were different... I felt rushed, running around to watch as many shows as possible.
I wish I had stopped at the ocarina stand... I really have been wanting one, but we passed it up to go to a show.
Anyway, I saw some people dressed up in steampunk, Star Trek, superheroes, futuristic, but most people were either dressed in Renaissance era clothing or current clothing. I loved the jousting, I don't think the rules were right, but whatever.
I would go again, but I'd want to spend more time causally walking, looking in stores, etc. I wish I'd bought a souvenir. Lol
When I get home and can upload my photos, I'll post some of my favorite photos.

The royal court and the Queen and princess.
All the other photos I took weren't that great.

I been to a renaissance fare before but it was two year's a ago by now. my state has one around fall and early winter. but it's more closer to ware my cousin's live. I went with friends for my first time it was great. even if I did not spend that much money. they had a large horse you could ride for $5.00 that was so much fun.
But one thing I like a friend of mine got sacred. by a guy dress up in some sort of outfit but. my friend was busy playing with his camera at the time. my other friend and my self laugh are butt's off. yet wish we ha gotten it on video.

Ooh, sorry, didn't know you weren't into eating the little piggies...
But you got one, and that's what counts. I think...
I'm glad you had a fun time, and yeah, there tends to be way too much to do in one day, I should have mentioned that.
The faire we have down here runs for six weekends, and is still almost too short for the serious enthusiast, lol.
And yay for sharing pictures! That's awesome!

It's been a long time since I've been to one, but it used to be so much fun! I was fond of dressing up myself, and if anything I got more compliments than weird looks XD I crafted my set of armor myself out of some easy to work leather that I got from my brother so it wasn't anything fancy/whimsical but it turned heads nonetheless. I would definitely recommend going, and dressing up if you can, you may even find yourself acting it out like the employees do :3 It just makes the experience all the more enjoyable!
