Got a question for you emoji-lovin' peeps

So, in a totally (not) top secret conversation between [redacted] and [redacted], the topic of emojis came up. Sometimes, they show up as a box with numbers. Or just an empty box.

Are y'all using some high tech gizmo? Or could it be that one's computer needs some special font/program downloaded to make it easy to view?

^ This is what one emoji should look like. Yet, it might appear as this to others:

I've never seen that before. I can see emotes on all my different devices.

I know that sometimes the apple emojis can't be seen on android or htc devices, because they aren't compatible.
But whenever I'm using my computer I can always see emojis of any kind. I've never really encountered the empty box thing :P

Are you using text characters (like 。◕‿◕。) or images?

It's about like the box of smilies we can use on here. Though it doesn't show up as [ smilie ] but as the image. So... I guess it's images?

I know that with phones, it can happen a lot. Especially between any sort of Android and iPhone. I would assume the same concept applies to computers; probably the operating systems just don't totally communicate.

It makes sense that there would be things that aren't compatible between the different systems.

I've noticed that out also depends on what version of a system the phone is running. My parents both have android phones. As do I, but the emotes we send don't always match up or get through entirely. I don't get the empty boxes though, just a series of question marks.

I sometimes see boxes with text characters because I don't have the necessary font installed on my computer, but that doesn't happen very often.

I've never gotten a box with picture emoji before though. I don't generally use emoji that are system specific though, if I can avoid it. Like google will automatically convert my text emotes into their emoji images, and it drives me freaking nuts. But that's a different conversation. [lol]

The box thing happen if a smilie is more advanced than the device trying to view it, ne? Happens a lot on my phone. Japanese or chinese charaters? Boxes. Emojis? Boxes.

I know that before I got my smart phone, and a friend of mine would try to send me emojis and non-regular text fonts etc... I'd just get a line of boxes, but now that I have my smart phone, that rarely ever happens anymore.
