LENT!?!
So Lent is coming up, starts on February 18th, and I am wondering to those who are going to be participating, what are you going to fast from?
For those of you who don't know, Lent is a 40 day fast(technically 46 if you want to get technical) That starts on Ash Wednesday and last until Easter. |
I don't participate in Lent, (I've only heard about it a little from when I was in school) but I like to cheer people on in their efforts to fast for 40 days. [:)]
Is Lent supposed to be a sort of cleansing of some sort? Like, mental cleansing by giving up something? 40 days is a long time! Is there a significance to the number of days of fasting? |
Was curious about that too actually. Where is it from and why do they do it lol. I know I should know this though which is sad.

Lent is a fast done just as Jesus had done for 40 days. Depending on what denomination you are really depends on how you fast, etc... I had two catholics in my class tell me that what I did really wasn't Lent because I didn't follow the Catholicism way.
I gave up Chicken and facebook 2 years ago. Poultry is just about the only meat I eat, so I practically starved, not really, myself from protein. I have no idea what I am going to do for this year. |
Thank you for reminding me that this is coming up!
Lent signifies the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting in the desert and resisting temptation from the devil. It begins on Ash Wednesday, a holy day, and ends on Easter, a feast. During this time we fast and practice abstinence - For most people, this means that they don't eat meat on Fridays and they give up one thing that's important (but unnecessary) to their daily life. So lots of people give up coffee or soda or tv, etc. Lots of Catholics also take it a step forward and outright fast during this time - Two meals per day, no eating in between meals, no alcohol, maybe no meat at all. Then that sacrifice is balanced out by vowing to contribute positively to the community through volunteer work or donations. [yes] Catholic Lent is meant to be a time of self-reflection and sacrifice. It's not a fun time of year, but at least it ends with Easter! |
I fast from meat on Fridays like Knerd said [yes] I could very well do the whole two meal a day thing though, because anymore I usually only eat one or two meals a day [lol]
I'm not really sure what I'd give up this year. I'm in school and taking an online class, so I have to be able to use the internet and talk to classmates about assignments. I don't eat candy, and I hardly drink soda anymore. I'll have to give this some thought... |
Thank you Knerd for the explanation. I such at explaining things. haha.
