No TV
Where we live, it is difficult to reach a free TV signal...
Even with a big, fancified antenna, we only receive 3 public broadcasting stations. Then the ice buildup on the antenna, at the end of Spring, caused the antenna to plummet to the concrete porch....breaking the fancified connector....rendering it useless to us. I don't consider it a huge loss... We have lots of movies to watch...and the scenic view out the front window... I find it amazing, how folks just assume that ya watch TV all the time... "Did you see that one episode of 'some show' where they 'did some amazing thing'"? "Have you seen "so n so's" new hairstyle? "Have you seen that new commercial?" It is no secret that we don't watch commercial television!...in fact, we tend to kinda brag about how well we deal without having commercial crap constantly stuffed into our craniums... But, even my doctor made a reference to something that most might see on TV...leaving me a bit in the dark on the subject. Even our friend, the Dog Guy, who originally bought us the fancified antenna tends to ask us if we saw CNN last night! Even the fancy antenna wouldn't get CNN if it was working! So...do you watch a lot of TV? ....or do you find other ways to use your time? What do you do with your free time? This curious mind would like to know! |
I only recently got a TV again, after several years without one. My brother and I mostly stick to watching one channel. We don't have cable, but luckily we get a few basic broadcast channels pretty well.
And honestly, I only watch a couple of shows on TV. Most everything I want to watch, I watch online. It's funny, because when I was a kid, I watched TV all the time...but then the internet happened. |
I recently had my cable go out for 3 days. And you know, but for the fact that without it, the radio gets staticy (I like listening to NPR)... I didn't miss it. It felt very calm without having a tv playing somewhere in the house constantly. Of course, if there was a special series on the air that I wanted to watch, I'm sure I'd have been very anxious. But those are few and far between, and usually are imported from england, so they are short as well.

It is rather nice to not be constantly bombarded by what networks think you should be watching.
I do miss watching the local news, though...but I'm prolly less depressed without it! Lol! My phone wont support watching shows online....but the BF watches movies and documentaries on his new-fangled Nexus 6....the screen is nearly as big as those tiny tv's from back in the day, and it is stereo!....a speaker on each side of the screen makes for great movie and video watching. Actually, I think that our lack of commercial television has been a contributing factor in how bright my granddaughter, who I have been raising for 2 and a half years, has become. ....that and the fact that we are on well water....no chemicals in our water, thank you! |
I have gone through phases with TV. From 2007-2009 I only had an antenna and the stations came in crappy, so I dropped watching a lot of my regular shows then. ...Then I moved back in with my parents, and my mom is a complete TV addict. I think she might have a problem, because whenever she is home the tv is constantly on. So of course I picked up on watching a few shows regularly with her.
My hubby downloads all of his shows and I download or stream all of mine, so for the past two years I've been relatively tv-less. It sits up there on the wall and only gets used for movies and games. I could probably count on one hand all of the times that my husband has randomly decided to turn on the tv just to see what was actually on. I don't miss the constant noise. I don't miss the commercials. I love being able to choose what I want to watch when I want to watch it, and usually that means classic tv shows when I'm feeling sick, haha. Nothing better than classic comedy :) I'm with you, Inzane... I think it probably does dumb the mind some. When I was a kid, mom limited our tv intake. I honestly feel a lot less depressed without the constant hum and the news blurbs filled with bad news. Also, yes, thank goodness for chemical free water :) |
It's back on now, and I'm actually feeling a bit sad, rather than. indifferent. Bummer.

That has been my life. I don't watch much TV. But now we have a little cable, and I watch Disney.

I used to watch a lot of tv back when I had an apartment and kind of made my own cable connection unbeknownst to Cox Cable. Toward the end of my apartment days I started renting tv series and watching them all commercial-free. My favorites were Dexter, Madmen, Rome, and Desperate Housewives.
Back then I stayed up late enough to watch Fox News and man, oh man, does Fox show a lot of commercials. But since I've gotten back into trucking, I only watch tv in motel rooms and when I am hometime to a limited extent. Though my brother and I watched two seasons of R D during my vacation. I don't miss all those mind-numbing commercials, but some are amusing. Even those commercials will the silly gecko and that girl who always wears white are funny. |
Since moving to this house last summer, there have been two or three power outages, at least one neighborhood and one exclusive to our house lasting an entire afternoon which rendered me unable to use either the television or the internet and it was pretty sad how lost I felt without the internet.
In my childhood I had no problem sustaining myself on pure imagination, the internet hardly even existed until I was a teenager but because I have poor verbal communication skills and can compose myself much better in writing, as I got older and more awkward the internet provided an ideal form of a social life. The television I can go an afternoon without, I've even done it multiple times recently without the necessity, especially on Mondays and Wednesday when there is never anything I want to watch. To be honest, there aren't many shows I watch and about half of them are NOT current but have been over for a good ten years. None of this includes the news, I almost never watch the news though my aunt keeps insisting I should know stuff and encourages me to at least look it up online. She's probably right. As for commercials; I hardly pay attention to them, sometimes I turn on my music through them. A lot of them are getting really idiotic, like the Progressive insurance commercials, those have gotten to the point where they can actually lower IQs. XP |
The recession brought an end to my TV addiction. We had to drop our satellite TV to save money, so instead I turned to Hulu, Netflix, and *ahem* slightly less legal means of watching shows. I still watch my favorites, but I spend so much less time watching TV now. I used to watch things "just because it's on," but now if I want to watch something I have to hunt it down and make the conscious choice to watch it. So not much gets watched, especially not things I've seen before or things I'm only marginally interested in. And definitely no infomercials. You know those late night infomercials that go on for an hour? Yeah, I'd watch those when I couldn't sleep. Can't tell you how many steaming mops and food processors I lusted over.
As for commercials, I rarely ever see them. I had adblock installed on my browser (naughty, I know), so I don't even see them on Hulu or Youtube. As a result, I almost never see commercials. But once in a while I'll find myself in a situation where I do see them (a superbowl party springs to mind), and I end up laughing out loud to one of those played-to-death-for-the-last-six-months commercials because I'd never seen it before and everyone looks at me like I've lost it. [lol] I'M SORRY, AWKWARD ROB LOWE WAS FUNNY THE FIRST TIME. |

With digital broadcasts, it can be difficult to get something with an antenna. We do watch a lot of TV here. My husband and I tallied our tv shows the other day. I think last week. We're at 11 TV shows airing new episodes at this time of year (more like 27 if we count off season shows we watch). We don't watch live TV though. We do DVR and streaming services. For us, it just works. We both work 40 hours and he has school on op of that. So by the time we're done with the adulting and ready for relaxation, it's dark out and we aren't in the best of neighborhoods. So we stay in, eat dinner. Watch an episode of something or two (espcially Dr. Who two-parters). Then we have about two hours of free time. It's usually spent on the treadmill and online or reading for me. I don't read nearly as much as I used to but I enjoy it. We don't go anywhere lately. I do miss that. We were usually always busy on the weekends with going somewhere or going to see live music etc. But his schedule changed so there isn't a single day of the week where one of us isn't working. Still, at the moment TV can feel exhausting and we're currently looking into what shows will be on the chopping block. We've already cut Love it or List it (a renovation/house hunting show) and game of thrones (medieval show based -loosely- on a book series we like) has bee cut from our line-up for next season.

because we have a massive tree outside the front of our house we can't get TV in our bedroom, which is basically the only place that me and my fiance stay in, we can get it in the living room but my idiot sister has decided that its now her bedroom, annoying as hell i know but hey, what can ya do!

Before the snow toppled the antenna off the porch last spring, we only received 3 channels of Public Broadcasting Stations....which was pretty cool cuz we were getting great kids shows during the day....like Sesame Street and Sid the Science Kid....then we got some good shows at night....like Nova and Democracy Now.
We are still without any live TV feed.... My phone crashes when I visit most websites so we have to wait for the BF to get home from work to provide the Hot Spot to give the IPad WiFi so I can catch up on news and let the granddaughter watch some videos. We have a lot of movies to choose from.....but after you've watched the same movie a few times, it just isn't worth popping popcorn for! Lol! |

My partner and I don't have cable. We have televisions, but they're for gaming consoles. Our PlayStation 3's connect to Netflix, and we have laptops and desktop computers, so we don't find we need cable. It's just another bill to pay that's unnecessary, haha.
We are up to date on a lot of shows. Recently we finished Daredevil (really recommend it, if you haven't seen it yet), Brooklyn 99, and numerous cartoons (Steven Universe, TMNT 2012). Most of these don't even air, so we're finding that internet is much more useful. Plus no commercials (just adds to skip after 5 seconds). |
