Quote:
"Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."

yay! bonfire night tonight (though I won't be going to any firework's displays until Saturday night). the poem refers to Guy Fawkes' gunowder plot from 17th century English history. on the 5th of November 1605 Guy Fawkes (a catholic sympathizer in protestant England) was caught in the cellars of London's Houses of Parliament, home of the British government, with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor, along with his co-conspirators, for plotting against the government. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason. in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King and Parliament to commission a Gunpowder Plot sermon to commemorate the event. together with the nursery rhyme and quote, it ensured that his crime would never be forgotten! hence the words to the quote "Remember, remember the 5th of November." it serves as a warning to new generations that treason will never be forgotten. the 5th of November is still commemorated in England every year with fireworks and bonfires culminating with the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes (the guy) and people chanting the quote of "Remember remember the 5th of November". The 'guys' are made by children who fill old clothes with crumpled newspapers to look like a man, who they display to passers-by and asking for " A penny for the guy". when I was a kid, we used the money to buy fireworks, but the law has changed and only over eighteen year olds can buy them now, and setting them off in public is now a finable offence. so most people go to grand fireworks displays instead

That is a very interesting tradition!
I find it slightly morbid, however, for children to create "guys" to throw into the fire!
I bet they burn well, being stuffed with newspaper! Lol!

I hope you enjoy the festivities! !
