Hurricane Irma
I live in the "catastrophic zone" in Irma's path up Florida. We have hurricane shutters and are planning on rising out the storm. It's pretty impossible to leave at this point because the highways are at a stand still up most of Florida from people evacuating and plane tickets are thousands of dollars.
My parents are coming to our house to stay with us. My grandma is out right REFUSING to leave her mobile home. Hopefully we can convince her. Anyway...anyone else in Irma's path? |
just a little; i'm in NC where we're at least supposed to expect high winds and power outages. carry your grandma out of that mobile home on your back if you have to; that is some serious danger. hope everyone who can't get out of state is able to stay safe.

Buy water early!
If you can't buy water, start filling any clean bottles or containers with water and start storing them in the fridge. As long as you don't open the fridge, and if you do, do so quickly it should stay cold. Also eat majorly perishable items first. and yes... drag her out of that mobile home. Odds are high that mobile home will leave the ground many times. Mobile homes are classified as extremely flimsy. A category 2 could flatten those. Quote:

I am in Colorado...nowhere near the park of Irma...but my heart goes out to you!
I agree that you should carry grandma out of the trailer...and try to collect any papers and pictures that are important. I hope you all stay safe! |

This should be a good set of information as to when exactly it makes landfall. |

Hummy - An attic can be a bit risky if the roof rips off though.

Given the size of that hurricane there isn't really a "good side" it's bigger than florida
Also hummy it appears it's expected to hit the west side now. |
We've definitely been through many'a hurricane and we've actually been prepared for it, water and food wise, for weeks now. Always do that at the start of hurricane season just in case. Matthew almost devastated us last year...it had a double eye wall 10 miles off the coast where I live before it curved at the last minute back out a bit. It could have been WAY worse....SO MUCH WORSE. But we were lucky.
There isn't escaping Irma. Hummy is correct...I'm on the east coast so it's going to be pretty bad here. Although...I'm not on the island which is where I grew up...I'm living mainland now. (In highschool we lived through 4 hurricanes in a row on that island...that was scary too). My husband is driving down to get my parents. We tried calling...my parents went over to my grandma's house...we even got both my estranged brothers to call and urge her to evacuate...she is just refusing. We can not force her to leave....it isn't legal. Even if there is a mandatory evacuation for her (which there is in my area for mobile homes)...not even the cops can force her to leave. It just basically means during the hurricane...first responders will NOT respond to her home because it was supposed to be evacuated. Unfortunately it looks like she's staying...we've tried everything short of forcing her and again...it's not legal. People in my area have tried that and suffered consequences themselves because of it. So...as soon as the storm is over...we'll be going down to her home. Thanks for your thoughts guys <3 It's going to be a bumpy ride but...I'm choosing to be optimistic. |
Maria - This is the latest forcast from a lot of sources:

That surge is definitely another risk.
|
|
Be safe y'all!
|
Looks like people on the west coast are going to have a surge too.
|
So far we are pretty good. We have power which meant we got to watch the Eagles Game. But we have water approaching the back of the house...definitely flooding D:
|
Oh dear.
I was watching some Miami live cams and there are flat trees all over and power poles are straining at an angle. It's insane. |
|
I suspect Maria has lost power by now. Melbourne on the east coast lost power yesterday.
