Have You Ever!...

Have you ever said something out loud that you suddenly felt so nerdy for in a room full of non-computer-literates?

I did the other day.

I don't know if anyone else has a thread on this, but I just found it funny, and want to know if anyone else does it. After I finish my story of course.

So I was with my family the other day, and all of them are still living in the age where letters are the fastest thing, and internet is something "that there government uses" (they are a little weird). But we were sitting there, and I had been living the summer with my friends out of state. Then, it happened. Someone said something, and I said "Lol!" Not "El oh el", but "Lol!" Exactly as it is spelled and everything.

It was so weird. Immediately, my family started questioning me about what it meant, and they were all using it like it was something cool they had learned from "back east"!!

Then, when it was all forgotten about and I had relaxed again, my mouth got ahead of me! Uncle Ted told a joke, and afterwards, I went "Roflmao!" And not the "Arr oh eff el em ay oh"...oh no...I couldn't be THAT cool. I said "Roflmao!" Just how it sounds. I couldn't stop blushing, and spent the rest of the evening silent as my relatives thought it was the coolest thing since portable toilets. >.<

Oye vey!

So, discuss:

Have you ever actually said "Lol" "roflmao" or any of the other little sayings that we have online in a real life situation?

What does your family think is cool, that you know is DEFINITELY not something you will EVER take to your friends?

Does that make me a weirdo, or just a normal internet addict?

I've heard of being doing that in real life, but I've never actually seen anyone do it. I haven't said 'lol' or 'roflmao'...or anything of that sort.

But of course I've used chat speak like that. XD
I went to High school in a program specifically aimed at technology and design (we were four girls in my class out of twenty seven) so the computer tak stuck to me before I knew what hit me.
It wasn't actually until we discussed the "decay of the modern language" in lingustic class at University that I first reacted on how abnormal it must sound to people not used to chat speak (especially to those of my class mates who were over 35)... I told them me and my friends used to say those abbrevations out loud, just as they're written and they looked absolutely horrified. One of them even wanted to wash out my mouth with soap...

The way I see it, i's a way of speaking. I know some friends who uses the Swedish equvivalent of "like" way too much in every day talk but it's natural to them, just as it is for me to translate chat abbrevations into something with actually stands for something. I don't use them in everyday talk nowadays though, since I haven't had the time to hang out with my friends from high school for a while so I've... lost the habit so to speak.

For me, it's a social code which can be very useful if you have to prove yourself in a new crowd (which I usually have to (unfortunately), being a girl who likes online games) but ave little use otherwise offline.

Nyeh. The only reason I notice is because I live in small town Utah, and my grandpa is spreading it all over town that I brought "new words" from "that there east coast...next tah DC and all them politician like folk" (his words not mine. I love that guy!)

It was strange at first, but now that I am back in my group of friends, it is just normal again. Tis just weird to hear it on the phone in an old hick voice. ^ ^

I said 'lol' once to a friend. I felt so embarased I just wanted to disapear...
but then he told me that he says 'lol' very often by accident ._.;

I said LOL outloud once :oops:
I smacked myself in the face and haven't said it since.

Marissa D 07-02-2007 01:19 PM

The word 'lol' means 'fun' in Dutch. xD And I say it. I say 'omg' as if it's a word... But with a dutch G so I sound completely retarded. I also say 'roflmao'. I don't spell it... I say it like a word. Yeah. >.>; Max raises his brows a lot when we're tryign to have a conversation.

I've said LOL before, back in the times when I went on AIM too much. Luckily I havent said it lately.

Offtopic.. ish;
Although, there's another different story. This has to do with something someone else said, thoughh. One time when everyone was in class, the bell rang. Alright~ the late bell. Seconds later, this girl comes rushing in. The teacher (*male) is like "Why're you late >:U?" and she yells out as loud as she can while running in "IT'S A GIRL THING YA~" and just calmly walks to the back to her seat.
Everyone else found it more emberessing than she herself, did, I think. DX

I've said "lawl" (lol) and "roffle" (rofl) out loud before and was mortified.

IshokuOsero 07-02-2007 02:31 PM

I've never said any of those little things other than when I was just making fun of people who do with my friends. I wouldn't find it "nerdy", I just find it something weird. Nerdy is more like playing games and reading a lot of sci-fi or something. I've had my nerd moments in situations where I probably shouldn't, such as the other day when I was talking with my cousin about people that are completely addicted to WoW. I don't remember what he said, but I had to correct him about something (I play the game pretty much every night with my boyfriend, when my parents and everyone are asleep here), and it made me feel good and bad at the same time. Good, because I'm actually learning things that my boyfriend's teaching me about the game, but bad because it made me feel like such a freak considering it's one of those things that most of my family thinks is a really stupid thing to play. They think that everyone who plays gets completely addicted to it, which isn't true especially in my case, since I just play when my boyfriend wants me to. If I'm playing alone, I can hardly hit level 20... I'd never be able to cap on a character without him, haha.

  • I write letters to friends all the time - either they don't have email or something like that. I have personally never used l33t speak or anything like that in public or before anybody

Uhm...I've always called it pronounced words like that the way I thought they looked...I also say things like "Wuh-tuh-fuuuh" instead of "what thee fook" etc XD

And eh, I only rly use it in a jokey way...I think D:

Either that or I do it sub-consciously. probz the latter though ;p
