*SLAP* Turn off the Light, we want to sleep!

I'm sure many of you who takes trips and have to be stuck taking a bus overnight know how it is.. it's hard to sleep on a bus so I made sure that I wouldn't be tired over the night... but I had the impression you could do whatever you want. It's a free world right?

Anyways.. it was getting on 1am sure.. but I'm not tired.. so I was playing Sudoku to pass the time when the girl behind me basically hit me on the back of the head. "Can you turn off the light so we can sleep?"

I mean jeeze, no ones going to have a good sleep light on or off... I didn't want to submit myself to boredom because of someone like her... It's so annoying.

Can't you do whatever you want anymore?
Discuss.

Hmm . . I can see both sides of the story here -

If i was really tired and on an overnight bus trip I would probably get annoyed at someone else with the light on - but then again if I was the person sitting quietly reading or whatever I would be annoyed at being asked to turn the light off.

If I was the annoyed person I would probably take a shirt, jacket, or something else to cover my eyes so I could try and sleep - not try and make someone else turn off their light. Now if someone had loud music or something else i may ask them to turn it down - but the light i would probably try and find a work-around.

"I'd of thought a stuck-up princess would carry around a sleeping mask to cover her eyes, instead of hitting people and trying to get them to submit."

If only the world slows down so such responses could be stated in their full glory...

Considering the short attention spans of upset, spoiled humans, I suppose showing off a certain finger would've sufficed, were I in that situation.

I don't hate people, just their stupid actions. I'm amused though; I've never ended up in such a situation, but know exactly what I'd say in such a case.

Kale, it sounds as if either the bus you were on was packed, or that you were using a 1 million candle* flashlight. In either case, I'd of certainly not stood for someone hitting me. She should've either moved somewhere else (bus at 1am? How full could it be!?) or use all of her wit to muster the fact that a jacket, magazine, or even an arm could be used to cover one's eyes.

*I've seen flashlights' light rating being equivalent to how many candles it'd take to give off the same brightness. Kind of like "horsepower."

People on buses are tards.
And flying is a pain, and expensive.
Driving in your own car isn't as bad, but still annoying.
Now trains, are a fun way of getting around!
They have sleeping sections, dining sections, just plain sitting and enjoying the view sections. It's all great fun!

I agree with the others, she could have easily covered her eyes.

The last time I was on a late running bus trip, there was like, 20 of us to a whole bus, and we all dropped off half way through the ride home anyway, so there was no lights on.

I never find it hard to sleep on the buses I've ridden on. I doze off in between s songs a lot.

Cinnamonmiko 08-17-2007 09:21 PM

Me? I'm such a passive person.

I get annoyed with people who leave their lights on on buses or airplanes, but I will never ever say a word.
Why?
Because I know that if I were bored and not tired at all, I would have my light on, too. I'd read or something, rather than being bored out of my gourd.
It's healthier for everyone that way. xP

I can never sleep on public transport >.< I just don't feel I can relax around strangers enough to actually sleep.
I don't need the lights off to sleep though, I have eyelids o_0

Sadistix_Love 08-17-2007 10:02 PM

Ouch, that sucks. I never slept on the bus for an overnight trip at all. Sit there like for two to more hours yea. But it wasn't like we traveled to the other side of the country. @[email protected]

  • I can't sleep on a bus/car for some reason. And when I do, it's for 5-10 minutes? The last bus trip I think everyone else was sleeping. (and I was doing sudoku, not very good at it xP)

I share a room with my sister. When she sleeps she demands that i turn off the light, computer and get out, or go to bed. It's really really annoying, and when I want to go to bed earlier and ask her to do the same, she gets angry. As you can see, my sister and I get into fights often. Last time when I crawled into bed I realized my pillows and blanket wasn't there. >.>

As for the bus conflict, the person must have been really annoyed and grumpy... I'm guessing if they were really tired, they'd be able to sleep even with a little bit of light.

Rusalka 08-17-2007 11:01 PM

It was a sixteen hour bus trip that started at seven pm and ended at noon the next day.

She had two blankets!!! She could have EASILY covered her eyes with one of them.

Mahinva 08-17-2007 11:18 PM

Kale, I can only hope that karma will work its magic on her.

spriteaddict 08-17-2007 11:19 PM

I would of kept on going after that. If she had asked nicely I wouldn't have a problem turning it off. I don't put up with that crap from anyone.

Suspense 08-17-2007 11:22 PM

That was rude of her D< If I was in that position, I'd switch it off for a minute, then switch it back on, just to piss her off xD

Queen Fool 08-18-2007 12:57 AM

Yeah, it's annoying. If I were you, I'd flick the light on and off just to annoy everyone...I'm weird like that.

Last time I was on a bus for something other than school, it was a girl-scout trip to Baltimore (yeah I'm an 8th grade girl scout, laugh as you wish). My friend and I were minding our own business, playing Mario Kart. The 2 girls sitting behind us were like 5 (one had really creepy eyes and the other was very very large) and wouldn't shut up. Then, when my friend and I were sharing a giant bag of candy, the girl with the creepy eyes has the nerve to tell us we should share. Maybe we would have, if they had actually shut up for 2 seconds out of the last hour. And as she yelled at us, her friend was eating a bag of the exact same candy. Why should be give you ours when you annoy the crap out of us AND you have some?

Ugh small children.

life in red and black 08-18-2007 03:50 AM

I'm never allowed on an overnight trip, but I've been there, on the trip back where everyone is sleeping and you're using the light.

I flicked mine on, noticed how many people stirred around me before keeping it on.

Usually I'd bring a flashlight so my friends and I can play with it.

XP She should've asked nicely.

Mahinva 08-18-2007 03:59 AM

I've read about a "light" concept where you have a thin, translucent sheet that is glow in the dark. You can put the sheet (more like credit card sized I believe) over your pages and the words show through. Since the card glows, it "illuminates" the object it is placed against, giving enough light so you can read.

I do not know if the product has been made yet, but it seems very handy for reading during such public transportation trips. Or really, just reading in the dark in general. ^_^"

Queen Nehalania 08-18-2007 04:07 AM

Dang how rude of her! She had no right to smack you in the back of the head and bitch at you like that.
Sheesh! People these days!

I mean she could have slept anyways or covered her eyes or something like that.
Besides she shouldn't be so selfish.

People like that just piss me off.

Anyways I've never been in an overnight bus trip. I probably couldn't sleep around strangers anyways... Unless I had family members with me.
xD

Dystopia 08-18-2007 05:48 AM

If someone like that was sitting behind me during a night trip, no one in the bus would be able to sleep. I would be screaming my head off at her. Or at least, using some insulting remark that, as nicely as possible, states that she should keep her grubby hands off me, suck up, and deal with the light.

Aero 08-18-2007 11:35 AM

Pshh. I'd just turn around and say don't touch me. xDD

But I'm usually that person that wouldn't want the light, I just would ignore it. ( And I can sleep with the light on, anyways. :| )

ToriKat 08-18-2007 08:34 PM

  • Whoa whoa whoa, she struck you? O_o; Goodness...what happened to nicely asking people? Manners these days....Waning. Plus, I fail to see why you have to cater to her needs...I have been ticked off many times, but I just let it go and don't make an issue about it. Then there are some people who think the world should bow to them or something...

    I have had two roommates who didn't mind the light being on. I usually stayed up late studying...sometimes drawing...and they just didn't care. They went to sleep just fine. Then I had two, my two most annoying roommates who complained about everything and anything under the sun, who couldn't. Even with an eye mask they would complain about the light. Well, when I sleep before them, I want to complain about the NOISE they generated. I can sleep with the light on, but noise is another thing. >_>;

By the way, they were hypocrites. If I went to sleep before them, they always left the lights on. This was BEFORE they complained about me having the lights on when THEY were trying to sleep. :<

mystic kiwi 08-18-2007 09:39 PM

I would get very annoyed if someone did that to me. If I wasn’t tired, I would want to occupy my time by reading or something like that. If I was the girl though I would be equally annoyed just because I can’t sleep at all with a light on and I can sleep quite well on a bus or in a car, etc.
