i tend to never swear.
in my eyes i find it unlady like, and im a lady so i dont swear. i think it makes us look ugly..i mean i say the words in my head but i dont say them out loud, i will also wirte them but i have to be extremly mad to do so. I have no problem listening to it [my boyfriend can get pretty foul when he is angry although he likes how i dont say them] also i think its more of a preference for peopel. Its just the words seem so unneccessary to use.. although my self have always wondered what made them become "bad" words i want to kno who decided what was going to be a "bad" word and what wasnt. |
I did a research paper during one of the semesters of college I had. I took a class about the origins of English, and she thought my paper was quite enjoyable. Just search online, you'll find articles and such that explain what the origins are.

Crap and shiz are the only "swear" words Ill ever come close to. Ever other swear word is saved up for the person thats REALLY gonna piss me off enough. Or rather, for now Im too much of a sissy to say one xD Either one! [ Lol and my friends swear all the time, I feel left out sometimes ]

usually when i'm in pissy mood, that's when i swear like there's no tomorrow. there are times when i direct my curses at others. that's when my anger gets out of hand. i try my best to control myself from doing so. other than that.. when i'm excited i'm like " oh sh-t!! "

I cuss like crazy. When I'm mad, 'fuck' comes out as every other word. Heh.

Gosh, you know, I've never really researched much about the history of curse words, but I'm sure many of them have evolved over the years. I'll bet the dictionary would give you information like this...
Though now that I read back through the thread, it looks like Wikipedia's got some good answers for you too. |
From what I've gathered, curse words are usually derrived from things which are considered to be taboos in the culture they're used in.
I'm not too sure about English curse/swearing words because it's not my mother language but I do know from where a lot of Swedish swear words came from. Since Sweden for a long time used to be a country where religion had a very high status (like in most European countries at that time) where the worst thing you could do was insulting the church and/or the bible, most of our curse words have some kind of biblical relation. The most common swear words are some of the huge numbers of names we've developed for the devil or Satan, if you prefer. A lot of "milder" versions of the swear words have developed from these as well. |

OMG I KNOW SOMETHING
Shit is actually an acronym! Back in the day, they used to transport manure by boat from country to country. But it smelled, so they decided to ship it dry. But the bottom of the boat, where the stored it, often was wet and then the ship started smelling like cow dung. To prevent that from happening, they'd have to store it higher in the boat so it wouldn't get wet. So thats where the acronym shit came in! Ship High In Transport. That way they'd know it was cow crap and would put it on a higher shelf or a different deck. Why it became a curse word, I dunno though o.o; Oh, and me personally, I don't mind if you use curse words. The only one I have a problem with is the n word. I've never said that word in my life and I promised myself I never would. I think fuck is a stronger word than others, but I don't have a problem using it and I don't mind when others use it most of the time :3 |
I never really gave it much thought... I mean, where did all words come from? I'd assume that they were meant to be offensive though.
|
I don't swear, but a lot of people around me do.... It's one of those things I decided I wouldn't do, so I don't do it... I'm good like that... If I really make up my mind about something, I have no trouble doing it.. *has secret dreams of delicious chewing gum which she cut out because of braces* I haven't had a gum in one year and 3 months!! nor a lollie :( I really can't wait to get my braces off ^^

You know, that's a good question ._. I wonder how these words came to be...eh, it's probably on Wikipedia. >.>;;
Ah, but I do swear. D: Sometimes, I just can't find another word to adequately express my feelings. I do try to keep it to a minimum, though. There's this freshman on my bus and every other word out of his mouth is the "s" word. Instead of making him look cool and badass like he thinks, it just makes him look stupid and ignorant. The only one I know of that's similar to swearing is the middle finger. xD I believe it had to do with archers back in the day (between the English and the French, I think?) where one side would cut off the middle finger of the other so they wouldn't be able to fire their bows, and to rub it in, they'd flip them the bird. Like..."Look what I have and you don't!" Quite interesting o_o |
I'm always shocked when my mother tells me the orgins of certain swear words. I was particularly disturbed by the orgin of "faggot". It's just . . . sick. It comes from the name of the stick that gay people would be tied to when they were burned alive. I shudder when I hear mention of the word. They are considered bad because of orgins and meanings that have been lost over the years. Few people actually know what they are saying. Some words such as "fuck" I find amusing. They are considered bad solely because of the prudish society that is their orgin x3 |
Wow, good question.
Once I actually looked up the word 'Idiot' which comes from generation and generations of other greek sayings that at first meant beauty I think..then went to silly..then foolish..then stupid...then idiotic. :3 I personally don't like swearing, It makes you sound un-educated. D: |
I'm pretty good with knowing the origins of words, let's see, what cuss words are out there...
Well F*** came about as a police term I believe. It stood for a sexual attack like GBH only sexual. I don't know C**ts origional meaning. Twat is a pregnant goldfish. Don't ask me why that became a swear word. Just imagine it. "You pregnant goldfish! I'll get you!" Sod is a clump of soil. I can't remember swear words though, they're on the tip of my tongue but I can't pull them up. I use bloody, hell, sod, twat F*** and Sh**** |
I cuss like a sailor. I really do. i blame my mom. I don't really mind though. They're only words. They're not going to hurt people. I don't, however say racial slurs. that's a whole 'nother subject.
Actually a faggot isn't just a stick. It's a bundle of sticks that are meant to burn. Not necessarily to burn homosexuals, but they did burn them at the stake a long time ago, so i guess that's where that came from. If you go over to england a faggot is actually a slang term for a cigarette because you have to light it on fire to smoke it. |
No it's not! A cigerette is a fag not a faggot
|
I'm pretty sure that they had a deeper or more literal meaning back when curse words were being used. Or, it could be the opposite where they just say random things and people were like, "*GASP* Noooo..."
I dunno, that's my theory. It doesn't help much, but I curse way more than I should. I try to stop, but I can't. It's like a reflex. XD; |
The problem that I've got with swear words is that they're very specific. You can say OTHER words that mean the EXACT SAME THING, you just can't say these words.
Shouldn't the meaning be the offensive part, not the word itself? See, I don't get why the word itself is "bad" to say. |
I love cuss words
|
Um, SWEARING IS BAD. 8DDD <3
I honestly don't know who came up with them. XD; But whoever did must have a lot of spare time. > 3 < |
well they all come from things that would have been insults. Like "jack ass" is what they called donkeys so it would be like being called an animal. Its just an insult that evolved over time.
But I am a very big potty mouth. >_>; |
The word 'b****' is associated with how 'moody' a female can get sometimes, since bitch is the word for a female dog.
I dunno about any others...I really dunno why there are 'swear' words anyway. I mean, it's just words people say when they're mad @[email protected] Some English people say 'Oh bugger' so...why isn't that a swear word? Or we say 'oh shoot' or 'darn' They are really just replacements for swear words so we can swear, without actually swearing ^-^ I can understand why more vulgar ones like....please excuse me...f*** or n***er are bad, it's because they mean things that we don't want to teach our children and are offensive to many. But things like shit, damn, or piss, they are just meaningless little things that shouldn't even be considered swear words. They aren't really offensive to anyone, unless you are an old crabby pants who complains :/ heehee xD [Okay! So I'm gonna go back and bleep the bad ones out so I don't feel like a weirdo!] |
