swearing??
ok, ya know how certain words are considered cuss words? well, i was wondering who came up with those words.
were they words poeple used when they were mad and just shouted stuff and thats what came out???? please tell me what you think about this, and if there's already a topic about this then sorry. :D |
xD I'm guessing that they meant something offensive back then, and they carried their negative effect all the way here.
|
I have NO idea on the origin of the words.. but i tend to curse more than i should at times XD I'm not THAT bad but i'm not afraid to use curse words (i mean obviously not in certain situations). I kind of surprise people sometimes when i get really mad and start venting and they cant help but laugh since i have kind of a low/soft voice, and the fact i'm a girl D:
I've had boyfriends from out of state (I'm from NY) and I swear they both had some weird impression i was aggressive or something because of it. But people around me normally swear at times and I've never had anyone tell me to "chill out" like they did, so i thought that was pretty interesting/weird. ^^; |

Some words that are bad here... are of normal "use" in other countries that speak spanish as well. Or the other way around. x']
It's pretty weird. |
yeah, i tend to be the non swearing kind in class too
though people still think im cool for some reason (mostly because they say im a gentleman and im too nice) i just dont like swearing at all, it makes me feel really bad (though before i sweared alot moe often) now i just dont where these words came from... like every other word in the dictionary, i dont know |
They weren't all originally swear words.
Ass is a donkey. Anyway, I have the worst mouth you'll ever hear. I don't curse to be "cool", either. It's just a matter of the friends I've had (all bad mouths, one as bad if not worse than me) and the fact that I get really mad really easily. Not to mention swearing is pretty much common language in most of the schools (starting in the 3-4 building and carrying all the way to the 11-12 building). |
I don't swear either, but you know I have wondered that before. What makes a certain word so unpleasant? It's merely a few phonemes smooshed together. But I don't care to hear curse words, especially when I have my young daughter with me. And there have been several movie I have turned off because of all the bad language. It's just not pleasant to listen to.
At the same time, it's funny how certain words have kind of lost their edge over the years. I remember, growing up, that "crap," while not a swear word necessarily, was pretty bad. And now? I'm afraid I say that word all the time. Too, on TV, words never broadcasted 10 years ago are commonplace now. Even on a channel such as ABC Family - a family station, you hear "ass" and "damn" and things like that all the time. I guess those are considered pretty mild by now, though. |
I don't know the origin of any of the swear words, but maybe some of that information could be found online.
I swear sometimes, but not often. Swearing does not bother me in the least bit, unless someone keeps adding a swear word after every few words. |
|
i still wonder who made the word and......i think it went a bit like this
"hmmm well i found a plate. then i found a spoon, then i ...god damn why do i ahve to keep starting new sentences so much!...from this day forth i shall strive to make joining sentences an easier and less stressful part of our world!!!" and from there the word "and" was created *nod* |
I faintly remember somebody telling me that swear words had their origins in the old spoken languages of our ancesters. The words lost their exact menaing over time and became know for their current day assosiations. I'm not sure though.
As for swearing myself, i tend not to. It's just something i was never raised to do. |
I use to wonder the same thing...xD I swear alot myself, but I dont really see anything wrong with it aslong as it's not directed to a certain person. But I would understand if someone was offended.
I found out a while ago that the word "bloody" came from the phrase "By your lady" which was a religious exclamation from the middle ages :3 I didn't really understand how that was used to curse since if someone just shouted out "BY YOUR LADEHH!" To me, I'd be cracking up xDD |
Fuck is one of my favorite words. It's also very verastile, just need to find the Monty Python skit about it.
There is a great documentary that just came out all about the word, called "F*ck", I highly recommend it. Really there is no clear reason why it is horrible, just that's the way it is, and will stay that way. |
fuckaty fuckaty fuck, i do not use cuss words, i use words, watch the documentary on the word Fuck, and you will never hear a cuss word again, in closing fuck
|
I’m sure they came from some less crude insult back in the day. I don’t normally swear all too much, only when I get really mad. I never swear at work or around small kids because I don’t think it’s needed.
|
I say that they just developed over time o.0 Who knows really. A few or them were derived from other words which crushed their original meanings. |
Um, I made a topic here about this a while ago
|: It had the origins. I guess I'll look for it. |
I don't curse to be cool...because its some sort of universal paradox for me to be "cool" and if it ever happens, planets with explode and aliens will appear and some other weird shit will go down.
But yeah. I curse too much and it shocks people because I seem to be the sweet and innocent type. n_n; But I don't curse every other word because then it gets old and boring. So I guess I just do it for the shock. It would be interesting to know the origins of some curse words. I LOVE Suspense's comment about Bloody and By your Lady...I think I'll start using that as a curse now...XD |
Generally, words develop and change and evolve like living organisms, so it's hard to say how or why words come to mean what they do. You can look up the entomology, which will give you an idea, linguistically, of where something came from, but it's fairly limited in telling the whole story.
The dictionary on my computer has this to say about the origins of "fuck": Quote:
|
Quote:
They came from Germanic Tribes when someone took them over and then the words became lower class compared to words like "intercourse" (which is French, and if the French took over Germanic tribes, then yeeeah, it's them who made the words 'lower class'.) |
I don't see why people are so against swearing :/
then again, I have the creative vocabulary of a sailor so maybe I'm a bit biased. I mean, I definitely wouldn't swear when talking to a respected person such as a boss or my family but other wise it's just another set of words to express and extreme feeling. |
I do not swear often, and that's because I'm 14. Well... I take that back.
Around just myself I'm a sailor. I can't tell you how many bad words I have said if it's just myself... but that's one thing. Around other people is another. I do use one, and that's crap. Crap isn't even that bad, I don't think. May parents are generally about as sarcastic and goofy as I myself am so I don't really hold back much around them, much less my best friend who lives ages away from me. On the other hand around people I don't know well, I'm not sarcastic, nor do I cuss at all for that matter. I only say what I know will be acceptable to them, and if that sort of thing just isn't to them I won't say it. Also, if I'm around family... Well, last time two of my cousins were over, I think one's in his twenties and the others like, a year younger than I am, we pretty much cut loose and said stuff like that. I think it all lies in knowing that there's a right time and place for everything. That's a big rule with that sort of thing, and not alot of people know it. |
I tend to swear a lot, but not really to be negative. A regular usage for me is, ' : D Holy shit! That was awesome! ' and other such neutral phrases. I'm not sure who made them 'bad', but I rarely ever use them against someone, so are they really ALWAYS bad? I really think it's just how one uses a word. c: It can be bad or good depending on the person. |
