Oh, and I love that vid about About Anon, I about pissed my self from laughter the first time I saw it XD Dude, they got a freaking DOG to protect themselves from Anon, come on. They acted like 4chan is some huge secret society of hackers when it's not :/ Honestly, Fox news likes to sensationalize.

I agree with you, except that 4chan is evil. Not a secret society as much as an ignored society, but the people there are nevertheless bad for the most part. And anonymous is a jerk, who is really crazy, in the scary way. Fox news is extreme though, but how is that new?

Yeah, a lot of people on the internet really suck and should be removed--but not all of them. I can only stay in touch with most of my friends via the internet, and some of them i met that way. Yeah, there're things that suck about it..... But it's useful to me. It shouldn't be shut down.

Allucard 10-02-2007 08:54 PM

The internet can't make you anything. It can only give you something to react to.

The internet doesn't plant the seeds of douche-baggery into people's minds, not even on 4chan. It only bring the inner douche to the surface, or exposes people to the kind of situation that would make them act like a douche-bag.

It can't change people, it can only change what they know and what they believe.

If the internet is evil, it's only because the people using it are.

woopdidoodoo 10-03-2007 01:29 PM

I don't really believe that the internet is truly evil at all, I mean it can't force you to do mean and cruel things. It can suggest it of course but it can't force you. I think people behind the internet can be really evil but its really all about choice. You chose what you wish to do if you are mentally well enough to be able to do so. If you are able to do so then you are also able to rationalize and work out from what is right and what is wrong. I think we are very complex creatures but the internet isn't evil, its just there and depending on how we use it, it changes.

Admonish Misconstruction 10-03-2007 02:39 PM

Then why are you on the internet .

I like the internet, sorta, it has its bad parts and its good parts. Its more the websites, not the internet itself. Still, I enjoy some people who I talk to on the net, and hate many others. Such as on Gaia all day long I'm trying to be hacked and scammed, annoying. Still its worth it I think, or else I wouldn't be on XD.

Doomfishy 10-03-2007 04:53 PM

The internet was definitely a good thing for me. I think it's part of the reason I can compose quality essays for my classes. Hanging around forums like this and posting long, complicated threads definitely helped my get a grasp on the English language.

neur0mancer 10-04-2007 05:13 PM

I resent that /b/ comment-
I browse /b/ and I'm not evil. ; ;

People like it because they're retarded, it doesnt make THEM retarded. ;)

But, uh...
If you're weak enough to be molded by something like the internet out of all things, maybe you deserve to be stupid?
I dont know.

I love it for its vast repositories of knowledge. <3

Honestly, I think that the internet will only change you if you allow it to take over your life, if you control when and for how long you're on the internet and only go to certain sites then it really won't affect you as much because you still have the control. When you let it take over everything and stop caring about work, food, your appearance, etc, then it changes you horribly.

Mirena 10-04-2007 07:48 PM

Well, those people in the news, that's just plain sick. But I think while the internet has bad sides, it does have good sides as well. Information is much more easily available (though, sadly it counts for bad information as well..) and it was a breaktrough in communication. It really depends how its used.

Cami 10-04-2007 08:08 PM

The internet isn't any more evil than guns are evil. They're both just tools. If people use them for evil purposes, that isn't the fault of the tool. Banning guns isn't going to stop people from killing each other, and banning the internet isn't going to stop people from scamming and hurting other people. It just changes the method.

If you've changed from being on the internet, it's probably more related to the people you've interacted with then the internet itself. Further, if you think being on the internet is making you a worse person, then get off. It's your choice to be here. You could quite easily go elsewhere, do things in real life, and see if that improves your attitude.

I'd guess, though, that there are far more factors to your personality change then the internet itself.

OMG, Fox investigated 4chan? That must be 4chan. D:

Then, get off the internet. Take a brake. That's what I did a while ago back; I was a very self-sheltered person, only trusting the internet, until my mom banned me from it for the whooole summer vacation. For the first week I went mad in my own little ways, but slowly I progressed into being the better person I was. And since then, I've stayed that way.

Also, it's not the internet that is evil; it's the people that use it.

I do feel a lot that people say things just to harass other people.

Plenty of people feel the need to attack me for my views o.o
I don't make any serious discussion posts in the GD any more.
I always end up feeling upset and sick to my stomach.
I have severe anxiety related to anyting social, and negative social interractions are really hard on me.
Especially when I feel I've done nothing to deserve them.

Why do internet people feel they must judge each other?
Frustrates the heck out of me.
If I wanted to hear so much opionated banter, I would enjoy highschool.

There is a lot of evil with the internet.
But, when it comes down to it, I need somewhere to escape to.
At least it's this instead of alcohol or drugs.

Dad's home?
Mene time!
Mom's sick of everything and threatening to leave?
Mene time!
You feel that your brother is probably going to end up killing you one day?
M- You get the point.

It isn't an answer, but at least it helps me unwind.
Same with a lot of people.

It's a bit sad really, but until I can drive, there isn't much else for me to do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_I..._Safety_Survey

The Youth Internet Safety Survey was a series of two surveys conducted in the United States in 1999 and 2004. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) provided funding to Dr. David Finkelhor, Director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, to conduct a research survey in 1999 on Internet victimization of youth. His research was cited by the United States Department of Justice as "the best profile of this problem to date".
Crimes Against Children Research Center staff interviewed a nationally representative sample youth, aged 10 to 17, who used the Internet regularly. There were 1501 subjects in the first survey in 1999, and 1500 in the second survey in 2005.
Results from the surveys have been quoted in support of the Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006, saying that "one in five children had received an unwanted online solicitation of a sexual nature". This is a reference to the 19% found in the first survey (see "First Survey" below). This is potentially misleading, since some have interpreted this as implying adults soliciting offline sexual contact from children. The 19% includes solicitation from minors to minors, and are not generally requests for physical/"offline" contact. The same survey found that none of the solicitations led to an actual sexual contact or assault.
The more complete results and recommendations are included below.

nternet user: using the Internet at least once a month for the past six months at home, school, a library, or some other place.
Sexual solicitations and approaches: Requests to engage in sexual activities or sexual talk or give personal sexual information that were unwanted or, whether wanted or not, made by an adult. Note that this includes solicitation from other minors, so unwanted advances by a 13-year-old on a 14-year-old are included in this.
Aggressive sexual solicitation: Sexual solicitations involving offline contact with the perpetrator through regular mail, by telephone, or in person or attempts or requests for offline contact.
Unwanted exposure to sexual material: Without seeking or expecting sexual material, being exposed to pictures of naked people or people having sex when doing online searches, surfing the web, opening E-mail or instant messages, or opening links in E-mail or instant messages.
Harassment: Threats or other offensive behavior (not sexual solicitation), sent online to the youth or posted online about the youth for others to see.
Not all such incidents were distressing to the youth who experienced them. Distressing incidents were episodes where youth rated themselves as very or extremely upset or afraid as a result of the incident.
[edit]First Survey (1999)

Known as YISS-1. This was conducted between August 1999 and February 2000. It interviewed 1501 youth Internet users, ages 10 through 17.
[edit]Highlights of Results
Regarding "Sexual Solicitations and Approaches", the survey found:
19 percent of the young Internet users surveyed received an unwanted sexual solicitation in the past year.
5 percent of the surveyed youth received a distressing sexual solicitation (i.e., the solicitation made them feel very or extremely upset or afraid).
3 percent of the youth received an aggressive solicitation involving offline contact or attempts or requests for offline contact.
None of the solicitations led to an actual sexual contact or assault.
One-third of the surveyed youth who had received a solicitation were male; two-thirds were female. The great majority (77 percent) of the victims were 14 to 17 years old; however, almost one quarter were ages 10 to 13. The younger group reported 37 percent of the distressing solicitations.
Regarding "Unwanted Exposure to Sexual Material", the survey found:
25 percent of the surveyed youth reported unwanted exposures to sexual material.
6 percent of the youth had experienced distressing exposures (i.e., the exposure made them very or extremely upset).
A slightly higher percentage of boys than girls reported exposures (57 percent vs. 42 percent) or distressing exposures (55 percent vs. 45 percent). Almost two-thirds of exposures were to youth ages 15 to 17. Less than one-tenth were to 11- and 12-year-olds, and none to 10-year-olds.
Regarding harassment, the survey found:
Six percent of the young people surveyed reported harassment incidents (threats, rumors, or other offensive behavior) during the past year.
Two percent of the surveyed youth reported episodes of distressing harassment (i.e., the incident made them feel very or extremely upset or afraid).
[edit]Second Survey (2004)

Known as YISS-2. This was conducted between March and June of 2005. It interviewed 1500 youth Internet users, ages 10 through 17.
[edit]Highlights of Results
Regarding "Sexual Solicitations and Approaches", the survey found:
13 percent of the young Internet users surveyed received an unwanted sexual solicitation in the past year. This is a decrease from the 19 percent found in the prior survey.
4 percent of the surveyed youth received a distressing sexual solicitation (i.e., the solicitation made them feel very or extremely upset or afraid). This is approximately the same as the 5 percent found in the prior survey.
4 percent of the youth received an aggressive solicitation involving offline contact or attempts or requests for offline contact. This is approximately the same as the 3 percent found in the prior survey.
Tragically, two of the solicitations (0.1 percent) lead to sexual assault, compared to zero cases of sexual contact or assault in the prior survey. For comparison, according to the FBI's criminal victimization tables' national rate for sexual assault, one would expect 4 rapes or sexual assults every year in a group of youth this size.[1]
Regarding "Unwanted Exposure to Sexual Material", the survey found:
34 percent of the surveyed youth reported unwanted exposures to sexual material. This is a marked increase from the 25% found in the prior survey.
9 percent of the youth had experienced distressing exposures (i.e., the exposure made them very or extremely upset). This is a rough equal increase from the 6% found in the prior survey. The study attributed this rise in part to aggressive tactics by pornography marketers, and the increased speed and capacity of computers and Internet connections to transmit images.
Regarding harassment, the survey found:
9 percent of the young people surveyed reported harassment incidents (threats, rumors, or other offensive behavior). This is a marked increase from the 6% found in the prior survey. Study authors said it was consistent with growing indicators of online incivility among youth.
3 percent of the surveyed youth reported episodes of distressing harassment (i.e., the incident made them feel very or extremely upset or afraid). This is a roughly equal increase from the 2% found in the prior survey.

The internet is basically my hobby D: I go on the internet everyday to talk to my friends, play games, do some homework and much more. My personality didn't actually change. It only change if you let it and like some of you said, people change depending on what they do. Menewsha is actually a good site because it filled with strict rules that make people show their "nice" side. I'm happy that there's so much friendly and kind people here. C:

The internet was the worse thing that humanity invented. People get extremely addicted especially the youngers one ( like me x.x )!

I saw the video.. It's not new to me. I've hear of that huge problem before. As much as people want to fight against to it, they eventually will win but the anonymous for sure will find another victim and do the same thing. Screw his/her live. It's like a hobby for them.

There's no only those kind of people that screw with people or take their ID like there are a lot of pervert persons on the sites. People even say that internet was invented for porn... It's sad but it might be a fact. -_-

About those sites like hi5, myspace or anything similar to that I don't have it. I'm only addicted to this site and to gaia xD But I don't usually get on very often like before.

I don't think its evil. . . I think its very very useful for extra credit Trivia assgnments. XD I don't go on the internet (for recreation) enough for it to turn me evil . . .
