  • I would never want to be that one-sided and shallow. (Before anybody gets defensive- I'm not insulting her OR saying she's shallow) I'd much, much rather have a logical and an emotional side, coexisting at once, even if never at peace.
I don't know how you take your supposed two personalities, but I know I would be very afraid. And worried.

I'm also not going to like 3rd person in casual talk, online or not, just because a friend or a person I respect talks like that. It's as original as using the word "Fiddledaddles" and as cool as a campfire, so I can only hope those aren't the reasons people use it for.
Maybe it isn't wrong, when did we ever claim that.
    Only annoying.

Like I've said, I'm not going around pointing fingers at people who type like that, so it actually feels good to express my own frustration 8)

Masquerade 09-15-2007 07:47 AM

It drives me slightly batty. There's nothing inherently wrong with the style or the people that use it, but to me it comes off as childish, attention-grabbing, and overly repetitive. That doesn't mean that the people who use the style are any of those things, but the style certainly makes me think so.

I almost think it's especially weird in forums. There's no need to write your own name down a bunch of times when we can just look to the left and poof - there's your username. At least if a person is doing it in real life it's almost helpful - you'll learn their name in no time since most people don't wear giant nametags on a daily basis.

Vickicat 09-15-2007 07:55 AM

LOL.

I find it somewhat annoying for people to type like that, unless they are using it to describe an action while RPing. When people do it just for normal talking, it's a bit confusing because unless you pay close attention to their username, or even their nickname or something, you might think they're talking about someone other than themself. That and there is just something slightly annoying when too many people start doing that. I don't generally care too much about it though, but I wouldn't write like that except when RPing.

yanyan13 09-15-2007 07:55 AM

  • i don't think there's anything wrong with typing in third person... TALKING in third person IS weird, but hey, you cant really walk up to that person and tell them to stop, just like that ^_^

I have never really encountered anyone TALKING in third person, but I'm sure I'll stare at the person who talks with me that way XD and I'll try to shake him out of it.. *shakes someone*

I'm 3/4 Japanese. Does that mean I'm only 1/4 of a fangirl?

Anyway, I don't mind if others type in third person. Orally saying it is another thing for me though. I don't get super pissed off--just slightly annoyed.

Indeed. Speaking it is a completely different matter.

Reverie 09-15-2007 08:05 AM

It doesn't bother me if I happen across someone who types like that once or twice. If I see it often from the same person, I may raise an eyebrow and move on. It's not my favorite form of speech, but I have nothing against those who do prefer to speak in such a way. Maybe they DO just want to come across as cute, and that's fine by me. In my opinion, as long as they're still able to get their point across, that's all that matters.

Ahh, there's the odd instance where I might speak in third person myself, but, yes, that's only if I feel the need to accentuate an opinion or a statement in a cute but definitive way.

Aeisha 09-15-2007 08:06 AM

I talk in third person occasionally but only when I am bored. When I am trying to make a point I never do it. I dunno I guess that if you speak in third person when trying to be smart it doesn't help others take you serious.

Middie 09-15-2007 08:29 AM

I honestly don't care if someone does it, out loud or online. It's just them and what they do. It's really not that different to say, "Middie thinks this" rather than, "I think this". Personally, though, I could never remember to speak in 3rd person all the time so I gave up.

mystic kiwi 09-15-2007 08:45 AM

I find it annoying most the time. It all depends on the person though. I know one person who types in first person all the time and it doesn’t bug me at all because that’s the only way I’ve ever seen them type something. If it was a random person however, I’d be really annoyed really quick.

Sizzla 09-15-2007 01:56 PM

I'm really annoyed by people who type/speak in third person. There aren't many of them out there, but I have seen them around, and honestly, I don't get it.

I think it's ridiculous.

I also found this passage, which makes me feel slightly differently about it...but only slightly.

Quote:

People who speak in the third person, initially come across as people who are obsessed with the idea of themselves. Some educators and psychologists will tell you that people who speak in the third person actually aren’t as obsessed as you’d think they are — they in fact have some kind of split personality that causes them to look at themselves like a completely different person.
SO, for those of you that do speak in third person, why do you? I'm actually curious. Because it seems attention-seeking to me to be honest...

Sadistix_Love 09-15-2007 02:33 PM

I never talk in third person unless it's like, pointing to meself about something. For example <-Sadii did this as an example.

Other than that, I don't. >o<

Raining Skittles 09-15-2007 06:14 PM

Skittles is fine with speaking in third person >w> -cough-

I'll sometimes talk in third person, and then my freinds will join in and we have a good laugh when we start mixing 1sta nd 3rd, making jumbled sentences, but other than that I don't think it bothers me too much. If someone were to speak it constantly, I would get annoyed, and probably tell them to stop, or 'shut the hell up' ^^;

Winter Wind 09-15-2007 06:56 PM

I dunno, I like typing in 3rd person. Once in a while, not constantly. I find the change quite funny and cute. Though I won't talk for hours in 3rd. xD

Shishunki 09-15-2007 07:23 PM

I don't do talk in third....
Unless I'm really bored.... Or just watched or read some thing where a person just kept talking in third person.
I've never really seen it in the forums. And I don't really mind it.
Though it does make me laugh when I read it in plays. Like Faustus, it made me giggles.
That larger habit I have is adding 's' or 'h' to things. X3

Emerrett 09-15-2007 09:49 PM

3rd person o.o

Well, it's okay to talk that way, it's cute for five minutes, after that it'd get really annoying. <<;

Flying Wings 09-15-2007 10:03 PM

It's good for describing yourself. x3 But I have to agree with Emerrett. x.x But sometimes it's cute! x3 Like when Flink does it! >w<

Krissy 09-15-2007 10:24 PM

I do it from time to time, myself. Mainly when I do something stupid. I'm not sure why I do it... I really do it more on the phone and stuff anywhere else. Like, I'll say, "Yeeeah, Krissy is stupid from time to time." I don't do it because I find it cute, and I'm not sure WHY I do it... I know it's odd, but I can't help it.

Raphaell 09-15-2007 10:28 PM

lol well i dont really care about it
personaly i dont talk in third person,
i kinda think its childish but its ok XD

Teeth 09-26-2007 03:50 AM

D:
I used to talk in 3rd Person. ):
Not on the internet..but when I was young, I think 12 or so.
I used to always say, "Danielle took out the trash" or "Danielle is awesome 8D"
Mind you I dont do it anymore... >.>'
I don't think it's childish or anything..it can get annoying at some points but it's just a different way of speaking, just like most british people say mate instead of pal.
Or something..?
*Off Topic* :'D

Fuumuu 09-26-2007 03:52 AM

I often speak in third person. xD;; But I'm usually more first personish, I think. :'O

--shrugs-- I don't know why it's "popular." Maybe because if we spoke in third person in real life, we'd be stared at? Haha. I don't know.

Amo_Angelus 09-26-2007 03:54 AM

Angel always talks in third person. It could be because she has been roleplaying near constantly for ten years and it is a hard habbit to break. She does it offline a lot too....

Wordstreamer 09-26-2007 04:00 AM

I do it once in a while--usually when other people do it (a 3rd person themed thread), or in a self-mocking way. That's less frequent, though.

Love_Miku 09-26-2007 04:30 AM

I do it every now and then i can't help it just habit. Not just when i am online even in real life i do it.

Medley 09-26-2007 04:49 AM

I don't really mind it, I think it's kind of funny. It's understandable that some people might find it annoying, though. :] To each their own.
