oh.. i was scanning the internet by this time and guess what? i found this news on cnn. here's a portion of the report:

Attacking several tons of woolly mammoth with stone-tipped spears must have taken extraordinary courage -- and ancient people left paintings to prove they did it. Now, scientists are approaching mammoths in a different way, extracting DNA from their dense coats in an effort to learn more about them. Attempts have been made to sequence their DNA from frozen animals, but that can be complicated by contamination. Researchers report in Friday's edition of the journal Science, however, that mammoth hair seems to be an excellent source of well-preserved DNA. They try to understand the relationship between different groups of animals, especially ones that are highly endangered, to learn whether those might face a similar fate, said Schuster, an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology. The DNA collected from the hair is much cleaner and much less damaged than that from other parts of the mammoths, he said, so it is more economic to sequence it. Learning the DNA sequence does not mean that the ancient animal can be cloned or somehow resurrected, Schuster said, adding "this is science fiction."

cool isn't it? if it will be succesful, then we would know how mammoths came to be.. how are they related to us.. oh my gosh its really cool! how i wish i can also decode genes and stuffs.. T_T it's really awesome!!
so.. any other reactions about the report? i'm sure you too will be amazed. but before you post your reaction be sure to read the whole summary made by me. okay? enjoy!!

yes.. they are that important and that's what makes them cool. and besides, the decoding of its genes are cool too..

Aren't woolly mammoths just hairy elephants? All we have to do is wait for the next ice age and BAM!...woolly mammoths everywhere!

Erm.... Not so sure that I care about the mammoths in particular, but being able to decode genes is a fun thing.

That's pretty neat.
I'm not really interested in mammoths.
I guess I've never really given them a chance though...
Iunno. But I guess it's cool. xD

I thought it was interesting. I read the article just a few minutes ago. It is kind of obvious though if you think about it. The whole cloning thing probably wouldn’t be too far off once they figure out how to stabilize the DNA.

About now the mammoth should be born.. hehe back in the year 2000 they were working on using the DNA they had gotten from some hair to implant into an elephant to give birth to one ( I know the article says you can't do this) but isn't it a cool thought?

Heh, I've always liked mammoths (read: furry things). I was pretty upset when I learned that humans hunted them to extinction. T__T
It's encouraging to see that scientists are trying to sequence their DNA in order to better understand currently endangered species though.
