Wilderness Program
...one of my good friends is on visit from doing a wilderness program and going to a boarding school for the last year.
On the other hand, I have never been personally fond of the idea of the concept of a wilderness program. I think it might have to do with how I feel if someone has a problem then they should be talking to someone. Maybe it is because I can not see how putting someone in the middle of nowhere to survive with a bunch of other children is going to help them. Sure, it might teach them teamwork and how to work with others. But at the same time, are they really concetreating on the bigger issues that might be on hand? I can see if they were out of control, rebeling and all that fun stuff. That it might give that student a wake-up call. But my friend was depressed, and suicidal. I guess it counted to biological factors, bullying, and chronic illnesses. I was, and still am, somewhat enraged at her parents for not trying therapy or medications. Or even trying to talk to their own daughter. (I am close to my friend. We would support each other.) But at the same time, I am happy that the boarding school helped her out. Boarding school---I can see. As the boarding school centered around helping out the students to improve their life. I don't know. What are your opinions on wilderness programs? Have you ever went through one? Or knew someone who has? Boarding schools? |
I've never been to the type of wilderness program that you're talking about here, but I have been to a backpacking summer camp for several year running.
I'm not depressed, but my life was changed by going to that camp. In part it's about teamwork and getting along with others, but for me the most important part was that I was carrying all my own gear up and down mountains, something which no one else could or would do for you. I gained a sense of self confidence in my own strength and ability that would have been hard to find elsewhere. The first time I ever went on a hike, let me tell you, I was so proud of myself for getting to the top of the mountain and getting to swim in the lake we'd come to. It was wonderful. |
I think I would love to do something like go on a wilderness program. I think it gives another level of communication and interacting with people that you might not normally meet. I know its a different therapy technique and you have to have the right mentality to be able to adapt to it and accept it but I think on the whole its really facinating and much better then just putting someone straight onto medication.

What are your opinions on wilderness programs?
I don't think there are wilderness programs where I live, so I only have a vague idea of what they are from the first post. It sounds like a good thing to do though, from what I read, but maybe not for someone who's suffers from clinical depression when they're a deppressive stage. Have you ever went through one? Never Or knew someone who has? Never Boarding schools? I reckon going to a boarding school would have its advantages as well as disadvantages. If one went to a boarding school there would not be the need to travel to and from campus every day, but then as a result there might be a reluctance for one to venture out beyond the school...or maybe not, I've never been to one, so I wouldn't have much of an idea. |
