I'm a Gaia lover, does that make me dirty? long rant

I'm really annoyed with all the Gaia-hate I'm seeing. I know Gaia has a large number of spammers, n00bs, hackers, etc. But you know what? It's the largest community on the internet- OF COURSE there's going to be a lot of predators out there! The more people there are, the more the predators lurk. It's common sense, and it's NOT Gaia's fault. :/

Everywhere I go I see "Man, this is bringing in more Gaians!" "I'm glad this isn't like Gaia!" "Haha, you sound like a Gaian!" I'm sick of it. I really am. Gaia is NOT bad. Great people go to Gaia, great friends. The staff works harder than anyone and tries their best to give the users what THEY want. They don't deserve this stereotyping, this scapegoating.

I swear, if a hacker/spammer/scammer/n00b comes to Mene, what's the usual retort? "gtfo, Gaian!" I'll bet anything it's what most people think. I find it hard to believe that there's not a chance in the world that they could belong somewhere else. When I first joined this site, my friend told me a lot of Gaians went here. And I found that it was true. There wasn't this anti-Gaia hatred everywhere. There was a little "I hope this site doesn't get as big as Gaia" talk, but that was about it. What happened?

And now we have to pass a test in order to post? The test is not hard to figure out- even a n00b would understand it, and answer correctly. It offended me, personally. It's as if you're saying "we won't accept you unless you're like us." I know literacy is preferred, and I know spamming is against the rules, but there are other ways to see to that.

A recent ad my friend saw for Menewsha really offended her and I. She, like me, is an avid Gaia fan. The ad read "Bored of Gaia? Try Menewsha!" What makes Menewsha better than Gaia?

Mene doesn't like people who are rude to others, right? Mene wants to be a great community filled with literate conversations and fun, fair gold earning with events to entertain us. Right now I'm feeling very unwanted on Mene. I feel like you all look down on me because I love Gaia. Thanks, Mene. :/

i just love giaiaonlin ei mean its fun but i am on menewsha because the site aint up for me soo i am just sitting here playing this this tv with a mouse

s w e e t & SPLENDID 10-12-2007 09:56 PM

I like Gaia, I like Mene.

Gaia is like the big city, lots of people and lots of things to do. And Mene is like the sweet little village, with many nice people and conversation. I love both.

Kriev 10-12-2007 09:56 PM

i am a gaia lover too!

i think this site is okay but i love gaia because i am so used to it and i can get around better. i agree with you 100%

BrokenHearted 10-12-2007 10:00 PM

I don't think there is Gaia hate necessarily but I do think a lot of users are just frustrated with the extreme influx of new users from Gaia who come to Menewsha and rather than reading the rules (since ours are not the same as Gaia's) they make a million and one spam and/or begging threads in any forum they choose. I think people are just frustrated more than anything, not hateful.

Also, I don't believe the ad was meant to be offensive (though it was certainly taken that way) and I'm pretty sure it has since been removed or changed to be less anti-gaia. <3

Ferra 10-12-2007 10:03 PM

Likewise, I think there's been a lot of misinterpretation of frustration with new spammy users as the dislike of Gaia as a whole. I'm sure there are those users with strong prejudice towards Gaia, but as far as I can tell they're the small minority.

Most users came from Gaia, and a lot still are active there. I'm no exception. :3

Casiana 10-12-2007 10:05 PM

Thanks for replying- I feel better now ^^;; I'm still annoyed, but not all "OMFG GRR D:<"

Nissa 10-12-2007 10:11 PM

Are you serious? I joined yesterday and have made it pretty clear that I came from gaia. I have had absolutely no hate thrown my way, and I've not seen any abuse of gaians. Is it just in this forum? This is my first time here so I suppose it could be. But I've been in most of the other forums and haven't seen a lick of gaia type prejudices.

EllfieNix 10-12-2007 10:12 PM

I haven't been on this site very long at all, but I've already seen people disliking and overgeneralizing Gaia and some rude comments about it. I really hope I don't encounter much more. I said some of this when I posted in the topic in general discussion about other avatar sites, but I agree wholeheartedly that more people mean more idiots. Gaia is a good site, and people like it, so it's grown. It's a little tougher to come by the good threads now, but they are there. If Menewsha were as big as Gaia, it would probably be just as difficult.

There's really no need to take jabs at Gaia/being better than Gaia anyway. There's no point; it's just catty and elitist. It seems obvious that those who go to Gaia only and those who go to Menewsha only probably go for different reasons, and there are those of us who might enjoy both. They are good in their own ways and they really have a lot of similarities. I really love s w e e t & SPLENDID's city/town simile!

And again, I haven't been here long, so perhaps I am misinterpreting annoyance for dislike. However, if someone approximates "Gaian" to "spammer" and "chatspeaker", that's annoying, and perhaps people should make it clearer that it's the spammers from Gaia that they don't like, because we are certainly not all spammers. Normally being so new I wouldn't even post in a topic like this, but I can honestly see what Casiana is talking about already.

AznBuNNiee 10-12-2007 10:17 PM

i love Gaia too much to even think about ditching it.
I enjoy this place as well, since its still a small community...

oh and by the way, is Gaiaonline down right now?
i can't get in at all.
like, the page won't even load for me T_____T

Before the ad on tektek came out, a lot of negative talk was going around. People were complaining about the invite-a-friend, too. Gaia was discussed in both cases.

Alice Elliot 10-12-2007 10:20 PM

Granted I'm not very active in this site, but I've browsed around, believe me I did, because the only way to earn gold here is by posting, so I have to hunt for topics I can relate with. I can't find this gaia hate that you speak of. When I joined here, left for months, returned, there has been no major discussion gaia related till that ad came up. I don't know, if I were to judge from your post alone, I'd think as if all the menewshan do is diss gaia, which isn't what I have seen from the 3 days I've been on here.

And what's wrong with the test? It's not as if we have to answer them for each post, why was it offensive? Did it say that if you love Gaia you're not welcome to post? XD

Deja Vu 10-12-2007 10:22 PM

When I saw a quote from one of the admins or mods from this site referring to the newest registered Gaians as "idiots" and being glad that those "idiots" will lose interest in Mensies and go back to Gaia, I felt offended.

I made my opinions on the site, too, but I managed to do it without stereotyping users. :?

Fortunately, I don't let the actions/opinions of others shape my feelings. If I lose interest in this site, it won't be because of the n00by actions of a few users.

true that but it is hard u only get alittle amount of g and gaia isnt working for me ether so im on here by default

EllfieNix 10-12-2007 10:25 PM

I didn't know about that ad before I joined, either. I probably would've still joined anyway, but it's bad marketing to advertise while insulting a site in the same category as yours that probably has a lot of people who might be interested in yours, but might be deterred because one of their favorite hangouts was insulted before they even stepped on the site.

Yep, it's down currently.

GtHb 10-12-2007 10:26 PM

I agree with you and I know where you're coming from. Awhile back I joined this other avatar site and all it's talk was about Gaia n00bs and how Gaia stinks with spammers and hackers.

Yes it's true, Gaia is filled with those users, but we can't help it. The admins/mods help as much as they can.
I too thought that literary test was outrageous, when I did my first post and saw that test, I was sorta confused, thinking that are we seriously resorting to THIS now, to past a test just to post.

Now I haven't seen that ad you spoke of, but if I saw that I downright would be offended. I joined yesterday and from what I have seen, I seriously pray this one site that deals with avatars, will be a site I stay on for awhile. But if like you said continues, I will have to think more of it.

the City-Town simile was really good :D

AznBuNNie: Yeah, it's down D:

Alice Elliot: It's not everywhere, but I've run into it enough.

Shrimp_Man 10-12-2007 10:36 PM

I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that though I haven't received any hate for being a Gaia member, I can totally see where people are coming from. When a lot of Gaians saw the ad for Mene on tektek there was a huge uproar about the text of the ad. And like most people, they wanted to protect their beloved Gaia from what they saw as an attack on Gaia. So many of them joined the site with the intention of 'getting back' at Mene. Was it stupid and immature? Yes. Would I have been annoyed if I hadn't joined Gaia first and instead was a Mene person first, hell yes!

So while I didn't appreciate people from Gaia being classified as idiots, I can completely see where people were getting it, because unfortunately those that came to Mene to troll and flame the site are idiots.

Junifer Angel 10-12-2007 10:42 PM

I haven't really seen too many people "bashing" Gaia. I've been on Gaia for three years, no way I'm leaving it.
But this site is nice. It's small, kind of like Gaia when I first joined, but that's besides the point.
It's extremely different from Gaia, which is really nice. I wish Gaia would crack down more on literacy, than letting spammers run around and ruin the site. So, kudos for Mene.

I agree completely with Shrimp_Man. [[nice username by the way]]

Though I haven't been on here long enough to see much bashing, so that's just my two sense. ><

Alice Elliot 10-12-2007 10:54 PM

Users who aren't happy with Gaia may have other reasons other than spammers. I mean right now Gaia is full of problems. The 2% tax has driven some players away, mostly vendors, then the fishing bots that keeps on winning the trophies, people who were unfairly banned(according to them) spammers/hackers/you name it. I buy MC regularly, but now I see ads in the forums since sept. Someone refused to refund payment I paid for art, it's been 2 weeks and the mod I contacted haven't done anything, same thing with one who didn't pay me for art, and that one's been months ago.

I have stopped my artshop because I'm afraid I might get hacked item/gold as payment. Heh, the mod I contacted said I won't get banned but they'll take away the illegal gold/item even if I have drawn art for it.

See? Gaia has some issues, and naturally you'll find discontented users. I haven't seen these Gaia hate you speak of, but I can understand if they're bitter against gaia if they've been unfairly banned or for some other reasons I mentioned. Yes, Gaia is such a big place and understaffed, which is why people ought to be more understanding, unfortunately people likes making a mountain out of a mole hill, but the opinions of such people shouldn't matter, why let them get to you?

EllfieNix 10-12-2007 11:02 PM

People being annoyed with the way Gaia handles some issues is one thing, but insulting Gaian users in general is another. I think that's the problem here. If someone doesn't like Gaia, that's fine. They don't have to use it, and they're fully entitled to their opinion. It's when people start feeling unwelcome just because they do use Gaia that there is an issue. If I had seen some of the things I've seen now before I joined, I might not have, because first impressions count for a lot. Luckily I see now that far from everyone says those things, but still.

darthjinstu 10-12-2007 11:02 PM

I like gaia better than Menewsha, it has more, and it's something we all fell in love with. I don't like that Menewsha made that "tired of gaia?" banner.

faridXmeggie 10-12-2007 11:05 PM

...

i like gaiaonline! but my server is down for it, thats why i'm here, grr, WHERE HAVE MY MUFFINS GONE?!?!THEY GO RAWR!

Blood King 10-12-2007 11:09 PM

Of course I like Gaia, I've been a member there for a little over three years. But of course I'd like to post on other sites. Of course, since I'm so used to Gaia's laid back view on posting, sometimes I'm a little afraid of posting in sites with strict rules concerning their forums like this site or even Neopets.
I don't want to get banned from a site I could potentially spend a lot of time on just for a slight slip in word judgment...

Alice Elliot 10-12-2007 11:13 PM

Where is this gaia hate that you speak of? Really, I haven't stumbled into it. If it's that rampant it would be easily noticeable, but is that the case here?

Unless I have seen it I can't really say if they have insulted all gaians as you make it. And I have stated here and there that I'm from gaia, I was never given the cold shoulder.
