I'm different from lots of people. and im not just saying that.

Amie1985 08-04-2008 11:35 PM

i'll have to admit i label people sometimes, but normally when they have taken a look to its extreme. mind you theres some people i'm unaware how to label, like most "average" people, though i assume to label them average is labeling them c.c, but i did see an interesting person with cotton candy pink blue hair a hooped ring through her nose like a bull might have and shaved off eyebrows drawn on with an eyebrow pencil (god it looked so bad) and i had no clue what to label her other then "odd" i label myself as normal since i dont really do anything that would put me into any other category.

Hey Pocky,

We already have a thread discussing labels and sub-cultures. Please use the search function before posting to avoid repeat topics. I've merged this thread with

People think i'm a nerd because i'm quiet and do my work, so what?
I'm probably doing it because...
1. I don't have any good friend that I want to talk too.
2. I want a good edumicashion! (:

I think subcultural and the broader cultural identity that people claim affiliation with through dress are important to the human psyche. Goth, punk, skater or whatever we all need to belong. Just because you hang out with only one group of people doesn't mean you give up your individuality. I'm a tattooed, spikey haired sub-culture gap-crossing girl who hangs out pretty much strictly with gamers and SCA people. I don't feel limited, I feel in my element. My friend's roommate dragged me to some "hip hop" stores at the mall once and I felt like a fish out of water. Not my scene. I am an individual but I stay with people who reinforce my own beliefs and ideology as much as they can and share common interests. With my family in fandom and all and being raised that way, it's what I know and while I raise my nose at other sub-cultures it's really all me, not the kinds of people I know who feel that way. Think for yourself but don't force yourself to be different for the sake of being different. It should be natural to be yourself.

Everyone is labeled; it's based off of experience and assumption of character.
Personally, I love labels and stereotypes.

I don't like putting labels on myself. The closest thing I come to (and often refer to myself as) is dorky. I'm not a geek (I can't take apart and reconstruct a computer), or a nerd (never was interested in the academic team). But then again I'm not nearly as "dorky" as some people, or maybe I should say introverted? I like being inside, playing video games, being on the computer...but if I'm in one place/inside for too long I just have to get out and sometimes become very lonely when I'm not around people.

So I guess I'm just me. And that's what I like. : 3

I know exactly what you're talkin' about. ):
I graduated high school this year, thank god, but through the entire four years, I cant count, not even guess, how many times i've been asked, "Are you a rocker?"
I mean... COMEON!!
I suppose they just sum up everything that isn't rap into 'rocker'.
At one point, I was all IMSOPUNKRAWK and i guess it was understandable to be asked then 'cuz i was kinda like 'wtf'.
But, even when i only worse a studded belt, or a leather jacket, or torn jeans, they would ask me that.

But to me, a rocker would be someone that listens to classic rock, alternative.

Now what I listen to, is heavy metal and things of that nature, but i guess thats just too complex for them. @[email protected]

Alright folks, I have something to say. I was recently on this random chat game thing. And people kept asking me, "what are you?", "are you goth?", things like that. And it just annoyed me so much. I will admit that I do look 'goth' and 'emo' alot, but that's not all I am. Then there's the whole anti-emo thing. It's completely ridiculous. Especially when self-proclaimed 'goths' do it. Emo is just a sub-culture steming from the goth style, which was a sub-culture of the punk style that sirfaced in the 70s... I think that's the right decade (wasn't alive back then so I don't know for sure.)

Anyway, I really don't think any of it matters. All these weird subcultures full of people that have to look or act a certain way just to fit in with misfits. It's insane. I don't get any of it at all. What's the point in limiting yourself to one social circle? By doing, that you rob yourself of your individuality and ultimately lose your identity to some bizarre fashion trend turned "lifestyle." I may be stupid for thinking this, but isn't it better to just be yourself instead of tying yourself down to some strange label that will be used against you again and again? I honestly can't understand why someone would choose to be a member of a cult-like subculture that dictates how you should dress and what you should enjoy. The world isn't all black-and-white. People aren't meant to fit neatly into these categories. We all have our own personalities and aspects that make us unique. No matter how hard you try you can never really fit into a label completely. Speaking of labels, there are people who preach about not labeling people, but ultimately end up putting a label on themselves. I don't know if I even have a point or if I just wanted to waste your time with typing something so pointless. But I can proudly say that I am a gothic, punkish, preppy, hyper, emo, redneck, skater, which simply boils down to three words… I AM ME!

labels
sub-cultures
clique-ish social circles
anything else that might be relevant that I can't think of right now

Completely agreeing with you. I say myself as "goth" to say it all in short, yet the peoples that know me know that I just don't fit the stereotype. In fact,I just don't care anymore about how you call me,I just do whatever I want now, without caring.

Railias 08-05-2008 07:51 PM

I guess labeling people is a typical thing others do when they are somewhat the opposite of you or biased about what you wear, act and look in general. But THEN AGAIN, I've never really been labeled anything.

Xyana 08-05-2008 08:15 PM

Meh, I used to get called goth all the time, but I gave up caring. I don't even dress like I used to anymore due to lack of clothing options around here. Oh well.
Some people just can't realize everyone has their own personality and dress how they want. Some dress like sluts... Okay, okay.. MOST dress like sluts, whereas some dress in dark clothing, and others dress "artistically"..
